9 Most Walkable Town Centers In California

California's smaller town centers took shape around mission-era plazas, Gold Rush buildings, and seaside wharves. Many still follow those original street plans, so shops, restaurants, and historic landmarks sit within a few blocks of one another. In Sonoma, one eight-acre plaza connects a mission, a barracks, and two old hotels into one loop. In Nevada City, the layout is similar, with the 1856 National Hotel and the Nevada Theatre spaced between two blocks along Broad Street. The walk from Cliff Drive in Capitola leads to a wharf and a beach, attracting thousands of locals daily. These are the nine most walkable town centers in California.

Sonoma

At eight acres, Sonoma Plaza is the largest plaza of its kind in California. It was laid out in 1834 by Mariano Vallejo, and the walking route continues along Vallejo's grid. An ideal walk begins at Mission San Francisco Solano, the 21st of the California missions, at the corner of East Spain Street and First Street East. Just down the same street are the Sonoma Barracks, erected by Vallejo in 1836 for his soldiers, and the Toscano Hotel, which is next, followed by the Swiss Hotel, a home built by Vallejo's brother Salvador in the late 1830s. The Toscano began as a general store in the early 1850s and was converted into a hotel in 1886, primarily for Italian immigrants who quarried basalt for use in street paving in the nearby region. The Bear Flag Revolt members hoisted their homemade flag on the plaza on June 14, 1846, and the Tuesday Night Market now occupies the same square.

Nevada City

Broad Street in Nevada City is among the easiest town centers to walk in due to its organised design. The National Hotel on Broad Street was constructed in 1856 in three brick buildings that survived the fire that July and has been hosting guests since August of that year. The Nevada Theatre is located two blocks up the hill. It is the oldest original theater building still standing in California. Firehouse No. 2, built in October 1860, is next and remains in use as a working firehouse. The Firehouse No. 1 Museum, on Main Street, adds a Victorian gingerbread front and a rooftop bell tower. Nevada City's commercial hub has well-preserved 19th-century architecture from the gold rush era, which saw its listing in the National Register of Historic Places back in 1985. The 2026 world population review confirms Nevada City's population at 3,184, a slight increase of 1.4% since 2020.

Healdsburg

Healdsburg is located at the intersection of the Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley, and Russian River Valley, and the town's main street reflects that. Healdsburg Avenue is the center of the city of 11,340, with Healdsburg Plaza located at the intersection of Matheson Street. The plaza was established in 1857 and is now used for a weekly farmers' market and summer concert series. The avenue is lined with tasting rooms. One of the most popular routes begins close to Healdsburg Avenue at Rockpile Vineyards, where only wine from the Rockpile appellation is served, and continues north to Siduri Wine Bar and Tasting Lounge. Back at the Plaza, the Raven Performing Arts Theater on North Street is approximately 0.1 mile away, and the Healdsburg Museum, which was once the Carnegie Library building, is approximately 0.2 miles away, inviting locals and visitors for live theater and historic tours.

San Luis Obispo

San Luis Obispo is a special town with a walkable and compact historic center that invites locals and visitors to its extensive sidewalks that host on-foot events. Higuera Street shuts down to cars from 6 pm to 9 pm, when the farmers' market sets up five blocks long with produce stands and BBQs. The street leads to Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, established by Junípero Serra on September 1, 1772. It is designed in an L-shaped plan and has a belfry rather than bell towers, with Mission Plaza extending out in front of it. Just behind the walls flows San Luis Obispo Creek, and a creek path below street level leads to the back patios of several restaurants. Chorro Street extends from the mission to Higuera, where Bubblegum Alley is located. It is said that the 70-foot stretch was originally used to gather gum from San Luis Obispo High School graduating seniors in the late 1940s, hence the name.

Ferndale

Ferndale's Main Street, constructed with dairy money, has undergone few changes since its construction. The Main Street Historic District has maintained its original look since the 20th century. The ornate Victorian buildings, dubbed Butterfat Palaces by residents, were built during the time when local dairies were selling butter at inflated prices in San Francisco, and the entire village is California Historical Landmark No. 883. It is a short walk of approximately a quarter mile along the street. At Main Street and Ocean Avenue sit the 1890 Victorian Inn and the Hotel Ivanhoe. The Ferndale Museum, one block off Main, brings visitors back to Victorian Ferndale. The walk along Berding Street connects to the Gingerbread Mansion. The village has been the filming location of The Majestic and Outbreak. The Kinetic Sculpture Race began on this street during Mother's Day in 1969, and today there are about 1,400 residents in the village.

Carmel-by-the-Sea

Carmel-by-the-Sea does not have any traffic lights or street addresses; directions are given as cross streets. For instance, the visitor center is nestled between Junipero Street and Mission Street on the second floor of Carmel Plaza, a shopping center opened in 1972 on a former lumber yard and movie theater. From there, it's a gentle descent along five short blocks of galleries and shops to the water on Ocean Avenue. The avenue remained a dirt road until 1922, when it finally received paving following a year of debate. Scenic Road is located one block before the shore, and runs along the Carmel Beach. The Forest Theater at Mountain View Avenue and Santa Rita Street has been hosting plays since 1910, a block south of Ocean Avenue.

Ojai

As a town that has withstood some of the most devastating wildfires of the 20th century, Ojai is one of the most walkable town centers in California, with a compact and flat street layout. The Arcade & Ojai Avenue is the town's pride with its retained Spanish Colonial Revival architecture that features boutiques, walkable footpaths, restaurants, and bakeries. Much of its downtown was destroyed by fire in 1917, and Edward Libbey of Toledo, Ohio, paid for a Spanish-style rebuild, at the same time renaming the town from Nordhoff to Ojai. Ojai Main Street is a continuous row of white arches, extending eastward from Signal Street along Ojai Avenue. Across the street, Libbey Park features the Libbey Bowl, and the 65-foot tower of the Ojai Post Office stands next. Matilija Street features a Sunday farmers' market behind the arcade. Farther west on the same street is Bart's Books, which has been an outdoor bookstore since 1964. The arcade turns pink when the sun sets behind the Topa Topa range.

Capitola

Capitola Village is located in a sea cliff gap through which Soquel Creek enters Monterey Bay, making the route easy to follow. The settlement originated as Soquel Landing, from a wharf at the mouth of the creek. Walkers park on Cliff Drive and then proceed down the hill towards Wharf Road, the final right turn just above the creek. The Capitola Wharf extends out from there, and under it lies Capitola Beach. To the east of the pier lie the colorful Venetian Court cottages and the Mediterranean-style Venetian Hotel directly across the street from the sand. The Esplanade follows the road past Zelda's on the Beach. The walk continues along the Esplanade, then a left onto Capitola Avenue, the town's namesake street of shops and restaurants, two blocks north on Monterey Avenue. It takes one to two hours to complete the full loop, and the village has approximately 9,900 residents.

Coronado

Coronado's walkable core is the stretch of Orange Avenue between the bay end and the ocean end. The avenue was named after the orange trees that once lined it, and streetcars that ran down it in the 1910s. The median is now occupied by tall cedars and flower beds. On the bay end, the Ferry Landing Marketplace is the landing point for the passenger ferry that comes in from Broadway Pier in downtown San Diego. Farther along Orange Avenue is the Coronado Museum of History and Art, where the Coronado Historical Association operates its Hotel del Coronado tours. The walk ends at the ocean end of Orange Avenue, just along the beach at the hotel itself, which has been open since 1888. The association also manages the Naval Air Station North Island, which was opened in 1917, and is a short drive away from the hotel.

Final Thoughts

These crown jewels make California's nine town centers and nine starting points for an afternoon stroll. Sonoma is open at its mission, Nevada City at its hotel, Ferndale at the corner of Main and Ocean Avenues, and Capitola at the bottom of Cliff Drive.
