9 The Rockies Towns Perfect For A Fresh Start

Settling in the Rockies is a dream for many Americans, but the typical home in Jackson, Wyoming, is worth just over $2 million, and in Park City, Utah, it's about $1.6 million. Prices like these put the best-known mountain towns in the region out of reach for most buyers. The good news is that houses in the nine working towns ahead still sell for less than the $417,500 national median, and the ski runs and trout water are a short drive from town. Most of these places also have a large employer close by, such as the Air Force base outside Ogden, Utah, or the national laboratory in the eastern Idaho desert, where about 80 commuter buses carry staff in from the surrounding towns. Starting over in the Rockies in 2026 is still possible, and these nine towns are proof.

Las Vegas, New Mexico

Plenty of what makes Las Vegas easy to live in is free, beginning with Montezuma Hot Springs, a set of pools along the Gallinas River about 6 miles northwest of town. Each pool holds water at a different temperature, and the larger rock pools include one nicknamed the lobster pot, at about 120 degrees, and another called Africa, closer to 103. The land belongs to United World College USA, and public access comes with a short list of rules, including a requirement to wear a bathing suit. Back in town, Zillow put the typical home value at $228,892 in September 2026, less than two-thirds of the $366,157 national figure.

New Mexico Highlands University, with about 715 employees, is the largest employer in Las Vegas, and Alta Vista Regional Hospital is next. Santa Fe is about 60 miles down Interstate 25. Two blocks of Bridge Street, lined with local shops and a gallery, lie between the Gallinas and the Plaza, and the Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge, 6 miles southeast, is free to visit, with elk and wild turkeys among the animals seen along its 8-mile auto tour loop and the Gallinas Nature Trail, which drops about 250 feet into a box canyon. Crowds pack the Plaza on the Fourth of July weekend for Fiestas de Las Vegas, four days of live music and vendors that include a free fun run on the morning of July 4 and fireworks that night.

Cañon City, Colorado

Cañon City is the starting point for the Royal Gorge Route Railroad, and a house here still costs about $100,000 less than the national median, with homes selling for a median of $313,851 in September 2026, according to Redfin. The train leaves the Santa Fe Depot downtown year-round on a 24-mile round trip to Parkdale that passes beneath the Royal Gorge Bridge. Tickets cost between $79 and $249 depending on the car, and evening trips last between two and a half and three hours.

Rafting outfitters run trips on the Arkansas River through the Royal Gorge in summer, and separate family floats take kids as young as 1. On land, the 7-mile Arkansas Riverwalk Trail has benches and picnic tables along its crushed-stone path, and the Tunnel Drive trail, 2 to 3 miles long, passes through three rock tunnels above the water. The state and federal prison systems are the largest employers in the area, with more than 1,600 jobs in Fremont County tied directly to the Colorado Department of Corrections, and Pueblo and Colorado Springs are each a little over an hour's drive away.

A two-hour parade moves through downtown during the free Cañon City Music and Blossom Festival in late April and early May, and the 2026 parade was the 88th. The Royal Gorge Rodeo, billed as the oldest rodeo in Colorado, is part of the same festival. Winter highs in Cañon City average about 50 degrees, mild enough for its nickname, the Climate Capital of Colorado.

Laramie, Wyoming

Weekend plans in Laramie often start 10 minutes east on Interstate 80 at Vedauwoo, where climbers come for crack routes in the Sherman granite that are considered some of the best in the world, and day use costs $5. A 3-mile loop around Turtle Rock works for anyone staying on the ground, and once snow falls, the same area is used for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The Snowy Range Ski Area, about 35 miles west, has four chairlifts and 27 trails, and opening day is tentatively set for December 11.

In summer, the Downtown Farmers Market is held on Friday afternoons between 3:30 and 7:30 at the historic railroad depot. Like Las Vegas, Laramie is a university town, though on a larger scale, since the University of Wyoming has about 3,000 employees and Ivinson Memorial Hospital is another major employer. Rent averaged $1,150 a month in September 2026, according to Zillow, and Cheyenne, the state capital, is about 50 miles east.

Casper, Wyoming

The North Platte River runs right through Casper, and the best-known fishing on it is at Grey Reef, about 25 miles southwest of town. Rainbow trout there average 3 to 6 pounds, fish of 8 to 20 pounds have been reported, and the stretch is considered one of the best rainbow trout fisheries in the country. In town, the Platte River Trails cover 11 miles along the river, with boat launches for floating and kayaking and public fishing access at spots such as Morad Park.

Downtown, the outdoor ice rink at David Street Station has Skate with Santa on December 5 and a Glow Skate on December 19, and adult day tickets at Hogadon Basin, on Casper Mountain, start at $65 during a season that usually opens in December and lasts into spring. Wyoming has no personal state income tax, which applies in Laramie as well, and Casper is large enough to be its own job market, with energy and health care among its main industries. The median sale price in Casper was $319,788 in August 2026, per Redfin.

Ogden, Utah

Most nights out in Ogden happen somewhere along Historic 25th Street. On the first Friday of every month, people walk between about 21 stops beginning at Union Station for the First Friday Art Stroll, with gallery openings and live music between 6 and 9 p.m. In summer, the same three blocks are lined with more than 200 vendors on Saturday mornings for Farmers Market Ogden, which ran May 23 through September 12 in 2026, with produce, bread, jewelry, and international street food for sale.

Hill Air Force Base, between Ogden and Layton, is the largest single-site employer in Utah, with more than 27,000 military and civilian workers, and McKay-Dee Hospital and Weber State University are also major employers in the city. FrontRunner trains reach Salt Lake City from Ogden Central Station in about an hour. After work, the Ogden River Parkway is free to use with no parking pass, and its most scenic stretch is the 2 miles between Lorin Farr Park and the Ogden Botanical Gardens.

Half the homes sold in Ogden in August 2026 went for less than $369,755, according to Redfin, and Snowbasin, about 30 minutes away, has 3,000 acres of ski terrain and 3,000 feet of vertical.

Pocatello, Idaho

Pocatello is one of those towns where the trails start inside the city limits. The City Creek Management Area alone has about 50 miles of them, with parking in a lot on Grant Street, and its main trail climbs almost 1,000 feet on routes shared by hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. Rent averaged $985 a month in September 2026, according to Zillow, and homes across the Pocatello area sold for a median of about $348,600 in the first half of the year.

An adult day ticket at Pebble Creek Ski Area in nearby Inkom costs $83 this season, with night skiing at $35 across 1,100 acres and 51 named runs, and the hot pools at Lava Hot Springs, also in Bannock County, stay between 102 and 112 degrees all year. Idaho State University and Portneuf Medical Center are among the county's largest employers, and Idaho National Laboratory, about 60 miles northwest, has more than 5,500 employees.

Idaho Falls, Idaho

The falls in Idaho Falls are right downtown, spread about 600 feet across the Snake River, and a paved River Walk lines both banks for about 5 miles, with benches along the water and ducks and geese on the lawns. A 2.3-mile loop circles John's Hole, and shops and restaurants line parts of the route, which makes it an easy lunch-hour walk from downtown.

Idaho National Laboratory, the lab 60 miles from Pocatello, also has a campus in Idaho Falls, and Melaleuca, a company headquartered in town, is one of Bonneville County's largest employers. The median sale price in Idaho Falls was $359,829 in September 2026, per Redfin. Melaleuca's free Fourth of July fireworks show, the Melaleuca Freedom Celebration, had its final year at Snake River Landing in 2026, with 18,915 shells planned, and the mayor has said future Independence Day fireworks will likely move to John's Hole on the River Walk as a smaller show.

Butte, Montana

The biggest weekend of the year in Butte is the free Montana Folk Festival in Uptown, where about 170,000 people turned out over three days in July 2026 to hear 21 performers on six stages and browse work from nearly 70 artists. In August, the free An Rí Rá Montana Irish Festival was held at the Original Mine Yard, with Irish music and food vendors.

On an ordinary weekday, a pasty from Joe's Pasty Shop or Park Street Pasty, filled with beef and cubed potatoes and eaten plain or with gravy, is the lunch Butte is known for. The Mineral Museum at Montana Tech is free and has a gold nugget of more than 27 ounces on display, and the university has about 450 faculty and staff. NorthWestern Energy has about 544 employees in Butte, and health care is leading job growth in Silver Bow County.

Thompson Park, about 10 miles from town, has 30 miles of non-motorized trails, and 14 miles of them are used in winter for snowshoeing and backcountry skiing. The Homestake Pass trail, off Interstate 90, is a 9-mile round trip with 1,845 feet of climbing. In 59701, Butte's main ZIP code, Zillow's typical home value was $282,353 in September 2026.

Anaconda, Montana

Georgetown Lake, about 15 miles west of Anaconda, Montana.

Anaconda is Butte's smaller neighbor, about 24 minutes away by car, which makes a job in Butte an easy commute, and Zillow put the typical home value here at $305,980 in August 2026. Community Hospital of Anaconda has about 400 employees, and new movies screen nightly at the Washoe Theater, with an intermission at every show. Old Works Golf Course, a public Jack Nicklaus signature course open between April and October, has bunkers filled with black slag, and Georgetown Lake, about 15 miles west, is known for kokanee salmon and rainbow trout.

Discovery Ski Area, about 25 minutes from town, has 67 trails and a vertical drop of 2,388 feet, and about 30 percent of its terrain is rated expert. Eight lifts serve the mountain, and this season is projected to open around December 4, weather permitting.

Bozeman, about 85 miles east of Butte on Interstate 90, had a typical home value of $721,678 in September 2026, according to Zillow, more than two and a half times the figure for Butte's main ZIP code. Discovery and Georgetown Lake are both closer to Butte and Anaconda than to Bozeman, so in this part of Montana the lower price also comes with the shorter drive to the mountains. Getting to work takes little time across the rest of these towns as well, with Census estimates putting the average commute at about 16 minutes in Pocatello and 17 in Casper, and unemployment in Bonneville County, which includes Idaho Falls, was 3.1 percent in July 2026.
