Old Saybrook

Right along the water's edge, where the Connecticut River meets the Long Island Sound, Old Saybrook is a senior’s delight. With roots dating back to the 1600s, this town embodies the quintessential New England experience, blending history with modern amenities. There are several beaches in and around Old Saybrook, including Hammonasset Beach State Park and Chalker Beach, which has miles of sand and vacation homes.

After a relaxing waterside stay, tourists may enjoy remnants of the area's past. Fort Saybrook Monument Park commemorates early European settlement, while the General William Hart House is an 18th-century home that is one of the oldest in the area. Available to visitors, this home also serves as the headquarters of the Old Saybrook Historical Society. The Estuary is an Old Saybrook senior center that offers a range of activities and quality-of-life enhancements for individuals aged fifty and above.

With a population under 5,000, Chester is a small town that offers the benefits of the countryside and water. However, it also retains a small-town feel to ensure retirees are not isolated. Located along the Connecticut River, this centuries-old town is a great tourist destination for all ages; its beautiful Main Street contains the Norma Terris Theatre, while nearby Gillette Castle can be reached by the Chester ferry.

Like Old Saybrook, Chester has excellent housing facilities for seniors. Aaron Manor, a nursing and rehabilitation center, provides both short- and long-term care, and a heart-healthy dining menu. The nearby Connecticut River Museum showcases the maritime heritage of the Connecticut River Valley. Located in a restored 19th-century steamboat warehouse, the museum has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Windham

Not to be outdone, Windham is another town saturated with history. The Windham Center Historic District is a 205-acre area in town that contains dozens of buildings, such as the Greek Revival-style Windham Bank, built in 1832 and later converted to a library, and the red-brick Willimantic Armory, which served as a facility for the Connecticut National Guard from 1913 to 1980. Windham Hospital, historic in its own right, has been reliably serving many Connecticut communities for the past eighty years. Windham's culinary scene rivals that of any other place in the world. With a plethora of cuisines to choose from, seniors can enjoy Fiesta Cinco De Mayo Restaurant for Mexican, or Oriental Cafe for sushi.

Darien

Though the Mather Center offers arts, games, and exercise classes to seniors, along with many other perks, Darien as a whole is another beautiful coastal town worth an extended stay. It is situated on the Long Island Sound, along Connecticut's Gold Coast. It has several beaches open to the public, including Pear Tree Point Beach, as well as several local parks, such as Cherry Lawn Park and Woodland Park, the latter of which is aptly named for its lush foliage, despite featuring several bike trails within.

Rife with shopping opportunities, Darien's downtown is an intersection of a historic district and an array of stores. The Museum of Darien is one such example: the historic tale of Darien and its surrounding area is told through ever-changing displays featuring items centuries old, including dresses, artwork, Civil War memorabilia, and more. The museum also offers educational events for younger audiences and tours of the town's most historic locations.

Mystic

Mystic contains all the maritime charm of Darien and then some for retirees. Its seaport contains a collection of historic watercraft, including the Charles W. Morgan, the nation's only surviving wooden whaling vessel. The Mystic River Bascule Bridge carries both vehicle and foot traffic into the tourist district of town. At the same time, the Amtrak train has a stop right in Mystic's downtown, providing people of all ages with an easy source of travel along the coast.

A town this close to the water, of course, has good seafood options: the famous Oyster Club not only serves delicious maritime delicacies, but does so in a treehouse! Men and women of a certain age will also remember the movie Mystic Pizza, starring Julia Roberts, which was inspired by and based on parts of Mystic, the town. For peace of mind, Mystic is also near Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in neighboring New London. It has several senior living options in the area, including Academy Point at Mystic, a historic waterfront assisted living community that offers personalized care and engaging daily activities.

Still, downtown tourists can find a mix of shops, restaurants, and art galleries, such as Kenise Barnes Fine Art. Kent's downtown area also displays a range of architectural styles over the years, from red brick to Victorian. The Kent Senior Center offers a variety of activities, including yoga, bingo, technology classes, walking groups, and more, all designed with seniors in mind.

Outside of town, Kent Falls State Park features waterfalls and a forest, making it a beautifully scenic place to spend a day. Macedonia Brook State Park is a 2,300-acre park featuring hiking trails, hilly terrain, and fishing opportunities.
