In places like Mendocino, you can hear the Pacific Ocean lapping against the shore, while in Crested Butte, the silence comes from a remote Rocky Mountain setting that still feels largely untouched. In Green Bank, even modern signals fade into the background inside the National Radio Quiet Zone. Tucked among landscapes ranging from the Chugach Mountains to the shores of the Great Lakes, these are some of the quietest small towns in the United States.

Between the towering peaks of the Chugach Mountains and the head of a deep fjord in Prince William Sound, Valdez feels remote even by Alaska’s standards. Valdez Glacier Lake is one of the most unique natural attractions near town. The surface is often dotted with large chunks of ice that have broken off the Valdez Glacier. In summer, visitors can kayak among these floating icebergs, while in winter the lake freezes over, allowing people to ice skate around them.

Another must-see natural area near Valdez is Keystone Canyon, a dramatic stretch of road known for its towering cliffs and powerful waterfalls. The town is best known for the Green Bank Observatory, home to the Green Bank Telescope, the world’s largest fully steerable radio telescope. On the southern shore of Payette Lake, McCall is a quiet mountain town in central Idaho. Payette Lake covers over 5,300 acres and is surrounded by pine-forested mountains, making it ideal for recreation on and off the water year-round. The town is encompassed by the 347-acre Mendocino Headlands State Park, a stretch of coastline known for its walking trails that run along 70-foot bluffs, revealing views of offshore islands, tide pools, and sandy beaches below.

Big River Beach is beneath the bluffs. It is a sandy shoreline popular for sunbathing, swimming, and peaceful walks along the water. Step inside the Highlight Gallery, which showcases work by Northern California painters, woodworkers, and sculptors. Crested Butte is very much on the road less traveled, and for that reason, it is a great place to enjoy the quiet Colorado wilderness. You can venture just outside of town onto the Snodgrass Trail, which takes hikers and mountain bikers through wide open wildflower meadows while panoramic mountain views frame the backdrop.

But you do not have to stray far from town to appreciate a quiet moment in the mountains. Rainbow Park is an open green space at the edge of town with playground equipment, a pavilion, and a pond with water so still you can see Mount Crested Butte reflected on its surface. The Crested Butte Museum is housed inside a historical downtown building. It displays both permanent and rotating exhibits, which narrate Crested Butte’s history and culture of skiing, mountain biking, ranching, and mining.

Cloudcroft, New Mexico

Cloudcroft is a mountain village hidden high in the Sacramento Mountains, away from the desert heat characteristic of New Mexico. To learn about the area’s early settlers at the Sacramento Mountains Museum and Pioneer Village. Through historic buildings, exhibits, and preserved cabins, the museum tells the story of the region’s ranching and farming industry. Walk through the pioneer village and gain insight into everyday life inside log cabins.

For a quiet afternoon outdoors, Zenith Park has walking trails, sports courts, picnic areas, and open green space. After exploring the park, stop by Noisy Water Winery to sample a selection of locally produced wines. The tasting room features more than 30 wines with charcuterie and cheese boards.

Friday Harbor is the main town on San Juan Island, surrounded by calm waters and forested islands of the coast of Washington. San Juan Island Roasters welcomes visitors straight off the ferry with coffee and espresso drinks paired with views of the water. Fairweather Park creates a quiet grassy area in the center of town, overlooking the waterfront, and equipped with benches, picnic tables, and public art sculptures.

Browse the San Juan Islands Museum of Art, which houses exhibits featuring multiple forms of visual arts, including photography, painting, and sculpture from both local and global artists. Venture out of town to Lime Kiln Point State Park, considered one of the best places in the world to view whales from land. Dripping Springs, Texas

Dripping Springs stands out for its unique natural sites, like the nearby Hamilton Pool Preserve, a historic swimming hole created by Hamilton Creek pouring over limestone outcrops. This creates a 50-foot waterfall that plunges into a pool at the bottom of a box canyon, retaining roughly the same level of water even in periods of drought. Since reservations are required, daily visitors are limited, which helps maintain the preserve's quiet and prevent crowding.

Bald Head Island, North Carolina

Tavernier is a quieter alternative to the busier resort towns of the Florida Keys. One of the best places to relax outdoors is Harry Harris Park, an oceanfront park with a manmade beach known for its clear and calm water. Other park amenities include picnic tables, barbecue grills, pavilions, shaded seating, and a boat ramp. Since alcohol and pets are prohibited on the beach, the atmosphere is consistently quiet, accompanied only by the gentle lap of water on the shore.

Get out of the sun and sip ice-cold cocktails and local brews at The Mar Bar. Even better, you don’t need to give up the views because it is right on the water. Walk along the boardwalks at the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary, observing over 40 non-releasable wild bird species while ocean views open up on the horizon behind you.

Quietness Across the United States

Finding true quiet in the United States can feel increasingly rare, but these small towns prove it still exists if you know where to look. Each of these destinations has a different definition of quiet. In Valdez, it can mean floating amongst chunks of glaciated ice on the turquoise waters of Valdez Glacier Lake, and in Dripping Springs, it could mean observing native flora and fauna at Charro Ranch Park.
