8 Stress-Free Arkansas Towns For A Weekend Retreat

Hot Springs draws its name from 47 thermal springs that surface right in the middle of downtown, and the whole city is built for a nice, slow exhale. That is the idea behind a weekend retreat in any of these Arkansas sweet spots. Leave the noise behind, soak in some spring water, walk a historic Main Street, and let the Ozarks and the rivers do the rest. The towns below deliver that in different ways, whether you want a spa day, a folk concert on a courthouse square, a float trip down the White River, or a porch chair with a view of the lake. Each one makes an easy, unhurried weekend escape.

Hot Springs is home to Arkansas's only national park, aptly named Hot Springs National Park. The 5,550-acre (22.5 km2) park provides ample opportunities to get outdoors and de-stress. With 26 miles (41.8 km) of hiking trails and peaceful recreation areas for birding and fishing, a soak in the natural waters of the hot springs is just the icing on the cake. And since Hot Springs remains the only national park centered in a city, it's just steps away from a vibrant downtown full of art galleries, shops, restaurants, bars, and live music.

Take a walk through the Garvan Woodland Gardens, hike Goat Rock Trail, or head over to The Gangster Museum of America to learn more about how Hot Springs became a bastion for mafia activity in the early 20th century. Then book yourself a spa day at the Astral Spa at Oaklawn, a full-service spa that boasts infrared saunas, vitality pools, heated pool loungers, and more. Stay the weekend at Oaklawn for easy access to the spa, or opt for a more unique experience at Starlight Haven, offering accommodations in the form of grand treehouses, geodesic domes, and safari-style glamping tents.

Literally the location of a Hallmark movie, this idyllic town will melt your stress away with its scenic views and small-town character. Known as the "Folk Music Capital of the World," there are more than enough concerts going on around town to soothe your soul. Fish, float, or boat the White River from Jack's Fishing Resort, where shuttle service is included in your trip, and let the fresh air blow away all your cares. Have a relaxing dinner overlooking the water on the spacious deck at the Angler's White River Resort Restaurant.

For stress-free accommodations, stay at the historic Inn at Mountain View, located next to Pickin' Park in the heart of town. The inn, built in 1886, features 10 unique rooms, and each guest enjoys a full breakfast every morning. Don't miss Ozark Folk Center State Park, dedicated to showcasing and preserving Ozark culture, where you can witness expert local craftsmen demonstrate blacksmithing, quilting, pottery, and more in the artisan village.

Eureka Springs

Eureka Springs offers multiple ways to unwind, whether your idea of a stress-free getaway includes shopping and antiquing, hiking and fishing, or taking in a museum and theater performance. Stay at the historic Crescent Hotel & Spa and feel like royalty in the castle-like structure, seated high above the Victorian Village of Eureka Springs. Head downtown to enjoy the Victorian architecture and hunt for treasure among the many antique shops and local proprietors. Learn a new skill at Adventure Art, or revel in someone else's artistic talent at Amused Fine Art & Extraordinary Books or the J.A. Nelson Gallery.

To de-stress in nature, go to Kings River Outfitters to plan your perfect day boating, floating, or fishing. Learn more about the area's history and culture at the Blue Spring Heritage Center, and discover the local story of the Trail of Tears. The Heritage Center also features a lovely garden. For more plants, check out La Grange Lavender Co., an aromatic lavender farm completely calming for your senses. Nothing says "stress-free" like lavender, and at La Grange, they put it in everything!

Pocahontas

In northeast Arkansas, find a little town on the Black River with a rich history and laidback personality. Perfect for a weekend escape, Pocahontas will entrench itself in your heart and mind. Retreat to a suite at the Lesmeister Guesthouse for peace and quiet while still being in the heart of downtown for easy access to dining and shopping. A block off the town square, there's a Veterans' Memorial outside the county courthouse. On the same grounds, you will find a particularly interesting rock.

Local lore says a meteorite streaked across the northeast Arkansas sky in 1859 and fell to earth just north of town, though University of Arkansas geologists later concluded the stone is an ordinary earthbound rock. The town celebrates it anyway, and the "meteorite" now sits behind a wrought-iron fence on the courthouse lawn, near what is today Black River Overlook Park, a nice place for a walk by the water. Across the street, you will find the perfect photo opportunity against the town mural, and many more along Arkansas's only quilt trail, which features roughly 60 locally-made quilts displayed on downtown buildings. No trip to Pocahontas would be complete without a stop at American Made General Store, a store stocked entirely with items made in the USA.

Mountain Home

Mountain Home sits between Norfork Lake and Bull Shoals Lake, making it a fisherman's paradise. But the Ozark retreat has a lot to offer anyone looking for a peaceful getaway. Stay on the lake for full tranquility at Teal Point Resort, or stay closer to town at the AmericInn by Wyndham. Enjoy a relaxing night on the town and shop local at Mountain Home Mercantile, put together the puzzle pieces and conquer the escape room at Mountain Mystery Escape, grab dinner at Rapp's Barren Brewing Company, and enjoy a drink at The Square Piano. For outdoor fun, visit an award-winning golf course at Big Creek Golf and Country Club, or head to the convergence of the White River and Buffalo River at Riley's Outfitter for boat rentals, float trips, or guided fishing trips. The fresh air, abundant wildlife, and natural beauty of the Ozarks are sure to take your cares away.

Arkadelphia

Arkadelphia lies south of Hot Springs, about halfway between Texarkana and the state capital of Little Rock on Interstate 30. This southern town, named after a northern city, is brimming with brotherly love. The town is home to Ouachita Baptist University and Henderson State University, which increase the population of the small town during the school year. Plan your visit in alignment with the academic calendar and take advantage of the sporting events and theatrical performances, or visit during a break to avoid the noise.

No matter what time of year you visit, be sure to explore the town to see over twenty properties on the National Register of Historic Places. Get back to nature by hiking the Desoto Bluff Trail or walking in River Park. Stay riverside at Cedar Lodge and marvel at the Ouachita River from the comfort of your own room while the rushing waters carry away all your cares.

Hope

Hope has two claims to fame: the birthplace of President Bill Clinton, and a long tradition of growing some of the largest watermelons ever recorded. The town was also the birthplace of Governor Mike Huckabee and his daughter, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the first female governor of Arkansas. You can visit the President William Jefferson Clinton Birthplace Home National Historic Site and walk around the Mike and Janet Huckabee Lake. The Lloyd Bright family has been growing record-breaking watermelons since 1979, and in 2005, they set the Guinness World Record with a watermelon weighing 268.8 pounds. That record has since been broken by a Tennessee grower, but the Bright family melons remain the pride of Hope. To see fruit on this scale, attend the Hope Watermelon Festival, held each August. Stay in town at the Hampton Inn, or, for a truly unique experience, drive a short distance to Washington, AR, and stay at the Jailhouse Bed and Breakfast.

Van Buren

On the Oklahoma border, a Victorian town awaits you. Van Buren's restored Victorian storefronts, scenic rides on the Historic Main Street Trolley, and live performances at the King Opera House will bring you back in time while keeping you grounded in the moment. Main Street is lined with antique shops, galleries, and specialty stores, making a slow afternoon of browsing one of the town's simplest pleasures. The city also encourages outdoor exploration with hiking on nearby trails at Lee Creek Park and fishing along the Arkansas River. When hunger hits, eat at the locals' favorite, The Vault 1905, set inside a restored 1905 bank building with soaring tin ceilings, live entertainment, and a menu of hearty comfort food. Cap the weekend with a stay at The Best Western, an easy home base for exploring both Van Buren and neighboring Fort Smith just across the river.

Where To Unwind This Weekend

Each of these towns answers the same question in a different way. Hot Springs and Eureka Springs feature thermal water, historic hotels, and walkable downtowns, while Mountain View and Pocahontas highlight folk music, quilts, and small-town history. For anglers, Mountain Home and Arkadelphia put you on the water within minutes, and Hope and Van Buren reward a slower pace built around festivals, main-street shopping, and a good meal. Wherever you land, the shared thread is space to breathe, and that is the whole point of the trip.
