Even if you are not part of the Cornell University community, retiring in Ithaca will be such a transformative decision in a positive way. First, you can probably do a different trail every weekend, and the best part is that each trail looks uniquely different in different seasons. There are the major state parks in the area (Think of Treman, Buttermilk, Taughannock) and plenty of smaller ones, some of which are off-the-beaten path. More than that, you have easy access to Cayuga Lake, a huge factor, especially if you love kayaking, windsurfing, or fishing. Then again, Ithaca is just the perfect size: big enough to have a Target and a Wegman's, and small enough to drive from end to end in about 15 minutes. Remember that nature is 5 minutes away in any direction. You can always catch a show at the 1,600-seat State Theatre of Ithaca or receive excellent medical services at the award-winning Cayuga Medical Centre. Houses in Ithaca fetch a median listing price of $394,650.

Living here means feasting your senses on several attractions and cultural touch points, including the Hudson River Maritime Museum, loved for its rotating exhibits and waterfront setting, the Trolley Museum of New York, which keeps an impressive collection of historic trolleys and streetcars, and peaceful green spaces like TR Gallo Waterfront Park, where you can occasionally spend time relaxing or people-watching. HealthAlliance Hospital, which recently witnessed a major expansion courtesy of the state Capital Restructuring Financing Program, guarantees doorstep healthcare access. Also, Wiltwyck’s Golf Course is in the area and was designed by renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, affectionately called the “Dean of American golf course architects.” The median listing price in Kingston is $519,667, a hard-to-beat price point, especially if you consider the town’s amenities and recreational opportunities.

So, if you want to enjoy the peace and freedom that retirement should come with, ditch the frenzied cities for Upstate New York’s soft and soothing atmosphere.
