The Warmest The Oceans Have Ever Been
In August 2026, Copernicus estimated that the daily average sea surface temperature across the ice-free extra-polar ocean reached 21.11°C, or about 70°F. It was the highest value in the ERA5 Climate Pulse record used from 1979 onward. It broke a record set less than two and a half years earlier, in March 2024, when the average reached 21.09°C. For a swimmer wading off Key West or Miami Beach, a few hundredths of a degree in the global average may be impossible to feel. Across the ocean, that additional heat can intensify marine heatwaves, damage ecosystems, and worsen coastal flooding.
A Record That's Always Changing

The spike didn't come out of nowhere. According to the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service, June 2026 was already the warmest June ever recorded for the ocean, edging past marks set in 2023 and 2024. Copernicus Marine Service put the average sea surface temperature that month at 21.0°C, and noted that the reading came near the start of a developing El Niño rather than at its peak, meaning more records were likely before the year was out. NOAA confirmed El Niño conditions in June and initially gave the event a 63 percent chance of becoming very strong during November 2026 through January 2027. By September 10, that probability had risen above 90 percent for fall and winter.

During El Niño, weakened trade winds allow warm surface water to shift eastward across the tropical Pacific while cold-water upwelling weakens, increasing ocean-to-atmosphere heat transfer and altering weather patterns worldwide. It's a natural cycle, but it's now playing out against decades of background warming, which is why the peaks keep climbing instead of simply repeating. NOAA and Copernicus both attribute the long-term trend, as opposed to any single record-breaking day, to human-driven greenhouse gas emissions.
By the halfway point of 2026, Copernicus Marine Service reported that global sea surface temperatures for January through June averaged close to 20.94°C, the second-warmest opening half of a year on record, trailing only the first half of 2024. More strikingly, marine heatwave conditions, commonly defined as temperatures above the local seasonal 90th percentile for at least five consecutive days, covered about 82 percent of the world's ocean surface by the end of June. The hotspots included the equatorial Pacific, the central North Atlantic, and upwelling zones off the California and Chilean coasts.
The Gulf of Mexico and the Florida Keys

In July 2023, waters across the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean were approximately 2°F to 4.5°F above average. South Florida had experienced elevated temperatures since February, making the event the region's longest marine heatwave since 1991 and the worst on record for Florida's coral reef. A shallow monitoring station in Manatee Bay briefly recorded 101.1°F, but the bay is not a coral reef, and the reading was not representative of offshore reef waters; NOAA's Coral Reef Watch program tracked bleaching alerts around Florida from June through the end of September that year. A 2025 study used satellite imagery and field observations to document mass bleaching at Horseshoe Reef and Cheeca Rocks without establishing that either reef site reached 38°C.

Corals can begin bleaching when sea surface temperatures reach 1°C above the local maximum monthly mean. NOAA considers reef-wide bleaching with mortality of heat-sensitive corals likely at eight Degree Heating Weeks, while greater accumulated stress raises the risk of widespread multi-species mortality. Heat stress can cause corals to expel the symbiotic algae that provide their color and much of their food. The coral turns white. Bleached coral can recover if temperatures fall, but prolonged or intense heat stress can cause starvation, disease, and death.
By September 2026, Florida's Coral Reef Resilience Program reported Bleaching Alert Level 4 around the Florida Keys and Dry Tortugas and Level 5 across much of Florida Bay, along with observed bleaching and mortality. NOAA Coral Reef Watch separately monitors bleaching risk across the Caribbean and Pacific. NOAA confirmed the fourth global coral bleaching event in April 2024; the event began in 2023 and likely ended in mid-2025. During the 2023 crisis, NOAA and its partners relocated selected nursery corals to cooler water or land-based facilities and conducted small-scale shading experiments, with similar measures used again in 2026.
What Warmer Oceans Mean

A hotter ocean surface does more than stress reefs. Copernicus scientists have pointed out that elevated sea surface temperatures feed more heat and moisture into the atmosphere, which can increase the intensity of storms that draw on that energy. Warmer water also expands, contributing to sea-level rise along US coastlines, and holds less dissolved carbon dioxide, weakening one of the ocean's roles as a buffer against the atmosphere's own greenhouse gas load.
Scientists monitoring the 2026 record say they're now watching to see whether it settles back down once El Niño fades, the way earlier spikes eventually did, or whether it marks a new normal. NOAA's September 10 outlook said El Niño was strengthening and had a greater than 90 percent chance of becoming very strong during fall and winter 2026-27; the next update is scheduled for October 8.
The August 2026 peak marks the warmest global ocean surface temperature in the modern record. El Niño intensified the short-term rise, but human-driven climate change remains the force behind the ocean's long-term warming. Although this record covers surface waters rather than the entire ocean depth, ocean heat content also reached a record high in 2025.
