The Island Ferries That Stop Running For Winter
Beaver Island's ferry can keep running into December, then stop while year-round flights continue connecting the island to the mainland. On Isle Royale, passenger boats finish much earlier, and the national park itself closes in November.
Several US island ferries suspend service for months, but their last sailings have different consequences. A seasonal route may serve a year-round community, connect campers to a state park, or carry visitors from a mainland port that loses its island service until spring. The timetable also depends on the particular operator. Monhegan, Maine, still has winter boats from Port Clyde after its New Harbor ferry stops, while Alaska's outer Aleutian ports lose their seasonal Marine Highway connection.
Beaver Island Boat Company, Michigan

The crossing from Charlevoix to Beaver Island covers 32 miles of Lake Michigan and takes just over two hours. It carries vehicles as well as passengers, giving island residents and visitors a way to move a car across the lake during the operating season. The Emerald Isle and Beaver Islander serve the route, with the particular vessel varying by departure.
Service generally runs from April until around Christmas. The published 2026 calendar begins April 8 and ends December 18, with every trip subject to weather. The winter gap therefore starts considerably later than it does on many excursion routes. Beaver Island remains accessible by air: two airlines provide daily, year-round service from Charlevoix. Anyone bringing a car needs to work within the boat's calendar, however. Vehicle reservations are required and must be made by phone with the company's staff.
Ranger III To Isle Royale, Michigan

Isle Royale has two separate closing dates to consider: the ferry's final passenger trip and the park's winter closure. Ranger III, which sails from Houghton, offers passenger service from late May into September. Each Lake Superior crossing takes approximately six hours, and the vessel does not offer a same-day round trip. A round trip aboard Ranger III requires an overnight stay on the island.
Passenger sailings finish weeks before the national park closes to public use on November 1. The closure lasts through April 15 and applies to the main island and the park's surrounding islands. Extreme weather and the safety of visitors and emergency responders are the stated reasons. An open date on the park calendar therefore does not guarantee a seat on Ranger III; its passenger season occupies a shorter part of the year.
Rock Island Ferry, Wisconsin

Reaching Rock Island State Park normally involves two ferries. The first crosses from the Door County peninsula to Washington Island. Travelers then cross Washington Island to Jackson Harbor, where the passenger-only Rock Island Ferry makes the final connection. Cars and bicycles cannot go onto Rock Island, so campers unload their equipment before boarding.
Only that last connection shuts down for the entire winter. The Rock Island Ferry operates from Memorial Day weekend through the second Monday in October, leaving the connection without scheduled service until the following spring. Washington Island's mainland ferry continues on a winter timetable.
The seasonal boat carries visitors to the park's walk-in campsites, Pottawatomie Lighthouse, and Thordarson Boathouse. Rock Island remains open year-round, but reaching Washington Island after the ferry season ends gets a traveler only partway there.
Jet Express To Put-in-Bay And Kelleys Island, Ohio

Jet Express has different seasonal deadlines for its Lake Erie destinations. In 2026, its Sandusky service to Kelleys Island ended September 7, while its final operating day for the Put-in-Bay season was October 25. A late-September trip could therefore fit one route's calendar after the other had already finished for the year.
The service uses water-jet-powered catamarans, with a roughly 30-minute trip between Port Clinton and Put-in-Bay. Its downtown arrival makes the boat useful for passengers visiting South Bass Island without bringing a car. Sandusky supplies a separate mainland departure point for the Kelleys Island route. These are specific Jet Express shutdowns, not dates when every ferry to the islands necessarily stops. The Kelleys Island Ferry Boat Line, which carries vehicles from Marblehead, publishes its own weather-dependent schedule. Travelers switching operators also need to account for the change in mainland dock.
Boston Harbor Islands Public Ferries, Massachusetts

A ferry from Long Wharf reaches Spectacle Island in about 30 minutes. The island has a 1.5-mile accessible perimeter trail, and its North Drumlin provides views across the harbor. The short journey puts an island park within reach of downtown Boston, but the regular public ferry operates only during the warmer part of the year.
The Boston Harbor Islands ferry season runs from May through October. In 2026, October 12 was the final scheduled day for both the Long Wharf service to Spectacle and the Hingham service to Peddocks Island. Fall departures had already become less frequent than summer departures. For Peddocks campers, there is an additional booking step: the park instructs visitors to reserve their campsite before reserving the ferry, whose capacity is limited. Occasional off-season cruises appear on the park's events calendar, but the ordinary island ferry timetable stops for winter.
Hardy Boat To Monhegan Island, Maine

Monhegan's winter ferry access shifts to a different mainland harbor. Hardy Boat Cruises provides a seasonal passenger service from New Harbor, running during a season that extends from mid-May into October. The outbound trip takes about an hour, and peak-season departures allow day visitors roughly five hours on the island. Fewer days operate during the shoulder season.
The New Harbor route's winter shutdown does not cut off Monhegan's year-round residents. Monhegan Boat Line continues sailing from Port Clyde, with a much thinner timetable in the coldest months. Its 2026 January-through-March schedule lists Monday and Thursday departures, subject to postal-holiday adjustments. Those winter boats return after unloading and reloading, so the timetable does not provide the same several-hour visit as Hardy Boat's summer day trip. An extended winter visit therefore requires a later return sailing from Monhegan, potentially several days after arrival.
Tustumena's Aleutian Island Service, Alaska

Dutch Harbor's ferry connection reaches much farther into open-ocean travel. The Alaska Marine Highway route extends southwest from Homer, passing Kodiak and communities along the Alaska Peninsula before continuing through the Aleutian chain. The Tustumena carries passengers and vehicles to Unalaska during the summer season; the city's transportation information describes sailings between early June and late September.
Winter weather restricts service to the outer communities. The Marine Highway specifically distinguishes them from Kodiak, Ouzinkie, and Port Lions, which have year-round ferry service. This is a seasonal limit on the Aleutian route, not a shutdown of Alaska's entire ferry system.
The Tustumena is equipped for substantial ocean crossings, with cabins and fin stabilizers that reduce rolling. Its vehicle elevator can load and unload cars where a conventional ramp is unavailable. Unalaska also has direct passenger flights to Anchorage.
For an island trip near the end of the season, the return sailing deserves as much attention as the outward journey. Ranger III's six-hour crossing cannot be booked as a same-day round trip, and Monhegan's winter mail-boat timetable sends the boat back after reloading. Under Monhegan's twice-weekly winter schedule, arriving Thursday and returning Monday means four nights ashore. The mainland departure point matters too: New Harbor and Port Clyde serve the same island on different calendars, while Washington Island's winter ferry does not continue onward to Rock Island. Checking the operator, departure dock, and final return date together establishes whether the intended trip is still possible before booking accommodation or bringing a vehicle to the terminal.
