7. New Buffalo City Beach, New Buffalo, Michigan

New Buffalo Beach carries seven combined fatalities and rescues in the historical GLCID-based ranking, and recent events show the hazard has not eased. Over a short stretch in July 2025, lifeguards faced an extraordinary cluster of emergencies; the National Weather Service reported nine people rescued from structural currents, while local accounts described roughly a dozen rescues across two days.
The nearby harbor pier drives the risk. Incoming waves press water against the structure, and the resulting current runs along the pier toward deeper water. Structural currents like these deceive people because the weather onshore can look pleasant while the water just past the pier stays dangerous. New Buffalo has kept its lifeguards, which turns many incidents that might have become fatalities into successful rescues in the record. That is a good reminder that raw death totals alone make a poor yardstick for comparing beach hazards.
8. Nickel Plate Beach, Huron, Ohio

Nickel Plate Beach is the standout Lake Erie entry. The historical analysis places it among the ten highest-ranked Great Lakes beaches, with seven combined fatalities and rescues. It also carries a documented catastrophe: in July 2002, a woman was caught in strong water near the beach, and four men went in after her. She survived. All four rescuers drowned.
After the tragedy, Huron officials introduced warning flags and rescue boxes stocked with flotation equipment. In July 2019, two more swimmers disappeared in separate incidents within a short span, and authorities closed Nickel Plate temporarily. In July 2026, another swimmer died after being found unresponsive well beyond the marked swimming buoys, though authorities reported calm water and green flags at the time, so that death should not automatically be pinned on a rip current.
