On the hunt for a quaint little place to kick back? While you can certainly book a flight to the major hotspots that you keep hearing about, the small towns of Idaho are also a hidden gem worth exploring. True to its nickname, the Gem State is full of hidden treasures, waiting to be discovered on your next adventure. This storied land has been home to people for over 14,500 years, first to the Indigenous peoples who still inhabit it today, long before the arrival of Europeans. Today, people visit Idaho to explore Craters of the Moon National Monument, go whitewater rafting on the Salmon River, and soak in Idaho’s natural hot springs. Its rugged mountains and deep river canyons make every corner of this state worth exploring. Some of the cutest small towns eagerly await visitors in 2025!

McCall

To start, nothing says vacation like a resort town. McCall, named after its founder Tom McCall, can be found on the southern shore of Payette Lake. The lake itself offers endless fun around its waters, best explored from the popular Ponderosa State Park, where a number of hiking trails also provide access to winter and water sports.

In the heart of this little town, you will find that the Central Idaho Historical Museum has a way of taking you back to the early 90s. Just west of there, the McCall Main Fish Hatchery can give you a fascinating glimpse into Idaho’s aquatic life—well worth a visit!

Sandpoint

On the shores of Lake Pend Oreille, Sandpoint stands as a year-round destination, with excellent ski slopes in the winter and sunny lake adventures in the summer! Places like Sandpoint City Beach Park provide a relaxing lakefront with its sandy beaches, while hiking areas like Pine Street Woods can help you tick off every item on your outdoor adventure list.

If you prefer to stay in town, the Bonner County Historical Society & Museum is a great choice to learn about the cultural and geological history of the area. Just south of Lakeview Park—a great hub for local events and games—you will find easy access to the area's lively community scene.

Ketchum

A small town with fairly busy streets, you might quickly find yourself exploring the many cafes and restaurants like Lefty's Bar & Grill. Ketchum Town Square is the lively heart of the community, where locals and visitors alike gather to relax, mingle, and enjoy themselves.

But beyond its charming streets, Ketchum is steeped in rich history. Not far from there, the Sun Valley Museum of Art really brings out the area's natural splendor for those who appreciate art and nature alike.

Wallace

Tucked away in Idaho's Silver Valley mining district, this cute town of just 800 residents is a perfect example of small-town vibes. Its old Victorian architecture, coupled with its historic places, makes it an ideal getaway. The Wallace District Mining Museum is a fun first stop, giving visitors a quick history lesson on mining and a walkthrough area featuring historic mining equipment. You can take the Sierra Silver Mine Tour, Inc., starting May 1st, for a guided tour of an underground silver mine. Aside from that, a nearby historical landmark just south of the museum can be found in the form of approximately 800 steps, known as the Historic Wallace South Hill Stairs!

Stanley

Remote, small, and delightful, this small community in the Sawtooth Valley in Custer County sits next to the Salmon River, with Valley Creek breaking off to its west. Endless green fields and rugged mountain tops can be seen around Stanley, starting with the Sawtooth Valley Pioneer Park, where your journey through the great outdoors can begin—from the ‘Redfish to Stanley trailhead’ hiking area.

A notable tourist attraction, however, is the Mountain Village Hot Spring. A visit to these mountains is not complete without stopping by. It is a good idea to keep a camera on hand—just nearby, Valley Creek Hot Springs is one of the most breathtaking spots in the area, and you will not want to miss capturing its beauty!

Moscow

Not to be mistaken for the one in Russia, the small town of Moscow is said by some to have been named after a Native American tribe called 'Masco,' though even that remains unclear. Today, this college town and its tree-lined streets enjoy a lively arts scene worth checking out. Major attractions include the McConnell Mansion—a landmark home built by the town’s former governor in 1886—and the Fort Russell Neighborhood Historic District. You can learn more about this cute place by visiting the Appaloosa Museum & Heritage Center, followed by a hike in an area known as the Stateline Wetlands Observation Deck, which offers a scenic spot for an up-close, firsthand experience of the local landscape and wildlife.

Salmon

The Salmon River cuts through the center of this small town in Lemhi County, creating a fine dining experience by the river at Shady Nook Restaurant & Lounge—worth trying for more than just the ‘fish and chips.’

The Lemhi County Historical Museum, located south of the river, unpacks a lot of great history for those interested in the origin of this delightful place. If you are really interested in the Salmon experience, the ‘Middle Fork Wilderness Outfitters/Salmon River Rafting Trips’ are your go-to choices. It is an excellent raft trip outfitter on East Main Street.
