Del Mar Beach During Summertime

11 California Small Towns With Unmatched Friendliness

Some small towns just feel welcoming, and California has plenty of them. They are places where the festival is run by neighbors and a visitor doesn't stay a stranger for long. In Mill Valley that shows up as a Pride celebration that feels more block party than spectacle. In Cherry Valley it's a farm throwing open its lavender fields at sunset. In Arcata it's an oyster festival the whole town turns out for. The eleven towns below all run on that same small-scale warmth.

In the woodsy Redwood Coast of Humboldt County, Arcata is a good base for exploring California's North Coast. Come in mid-June and you might catch the Arcata Bay Oyster Festival, with live music, a craft market, and food and drinks on site. Later in the summer, the Humboldt Folklife Festival is a short drive away in Blue Lake, with folk concerts, workshops, and casual jam sessions. Year-round, Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary is a 307-acre stretch of freshwater marshes, salt marsh, tidal sloughs, and grassy uplands by Humboldt Bay, good for hiking, biking, and birdwatching. A short drive northwest, Mad River Beach County Park is one of the region's best spots for kayaking, canoeing, beachcombing, and saltwater fishing. Back in town, The Front Porch Inn offers cozy rooms and a hidden outdoor spa area with artisan-made soaking tubs and saunas.

Grass Valley

About 57 miles northeast of Sacramento, Grass Valley sits in California Gold Country. In mid-June, the Father's Day Bluegrass Festival pairs bluegrass music with camping in open pine groves, and in early July the High Sierra Music Festival brings a bigger lineup of live music, acoustic performances, workshops, and a silent disco. For a look at the area's mining past, the North Star Powerhouse Mining Museum covers the region's heritage, and Empire Mine State Historic Park preserves one of California's richest gold mines along with the owner's Tudor-style estate. At the end of the day, Grass Valley Courtyard Suites offers spacious rooms with Tempur-Pedic beds, plush chairs, mini-fridges, and in-room coffee.

Healdsburg

Northern California has plenty of wine country towns, but Healdsburg in Sonoma County stands out. In summer, the city hosts Tuesdays in the Plaza concerts at Healdsburg Plaza, with local food vendors set up nearby. For more open space, Del Rio Woods Regional Park has direct access to the Russian River and a beach for sunbathing and paddling, plus fishing and birdwatching year-round. Healdsburg sits where the Russian River Valley, Dry Creek Valley, and Alexander Valley AVAs meet, so there's no shortage of wineries to try, including the single-vineyard, limited-production wines of Simoncini Vineyards & Wine Cave and the family-run Mill Creek Vineyards & Winery. Near Healdsburg Plaza, Hotel Healdsburg is an intimate, refined spot with Charlie Palmer's Dry Creek Kitchen, a full-service spa, and contemporary rooms. Guests can start the day with breakfast before heading out to the plaza, the river, and the surrounding wine country.

San Francisco hosts one of the country's most famous Pride celebrations in late June, but about 14 miles north there's a smaller, more laid-back version. PRIDE Mill Valley usually lands on the first Saturday in June, with DJ sets, Mexican folklorico dance, and local vendor booths. Later in the year, the Mill Valley Film Festival returns in early October. While in the area, you can visit the Bay Area's finest old-growth coast redwood forest at Muir Woods National Monument. Just south of town, Golden Gate National Recreation Area covers two centuries of history and several of Marin County's most beautiful beaches, including Tennessee Beach and Rodeo Beach. In town, Mill Valley Inn has a convenient downtown location, cozy rooms, a continental breakfast buffet, an evening wine reception, and free parking.

Half Moon Bay sits on a rugged stretch of coast about 35 miles south of San Francisco and 43 miles west of San José. June through October, the city hosts First Fridays: Art on Main, a good way to start the weekend at participating galleries. For more local art, you can catch a show at the community-run Coastal Repertory Theatre. Mavericks Surf Company, the shop founded by big-wave surfer Jeff Clark, is worth a stop for its ties to local surf culture. Nearby Mavericks Beach, west of Pillar Point Harbor, doesn't have its biggest waves in summer, but it's still a fine place to walk the Pacific Ocean shore and explore the tide pools. A short drive south of downtown, The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay is the area's premier luxury resort, with easy access to the Half Moon Bay Golf Links, a full slate of spa services, and several restaurants.

Mammoth Lakes

At over 7,800 feet in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Mammoth Lakes is a winter sports destination that's also great in summer. In mid-July, Mammoth JAZZfest brings strong jazz musicians to the mountain along with local and regional wines. Later in the month, Mammoth Villagefest is a rock-and-roll festival with food and drinks from local vendors. Devils Postpile National Monument is worth seeing for one of the world's highest concentrations of near-perfect hexagonal basalt columns, formed by lava flows around 90,000 years ago. If you're heading toward Devils Postpile, Agnew Meadows, or Reds Meadow Valley in summer 2026, check current access details first, since road work and seasonal shuttle operations may affect how you get there. For a base camp, Tamarack Lodge offers private cabins, easy access to many of Mammoth's attractions, and on-site dining at The Lakefront Restaurant.

Paso Robles

About 110 miles west of Bakersfield, Paso Robles is a Central Coast wine country town with plenty of celebrations. Though it's known for wine, the Firestone Walker Invitational Beer Fest at the end of May showcases top local and regional craft beers. In mid-July, the California Mid-State Fair hosts rock and country concerts along with agriculture events, including a professional horse show. For the wine itself, you can visit the longtime family-run Parrish Family Vineyard and the more avant-garde Le Cuvier Winery. For more wine country, Allegretto Vineyard Resort Paso Robles has plush rooms, the full-service Spa Allegretto, casual fine dining at Cello Ristorante & Bar, and tastings of its own Allegretto wines.

Just 35 miles northwest of Santa Barbara, Los Olivos is a tiny village with big flavors. In early June, the Los Olivos Jazz and Olive Festival brings world-class jazz musicians along with chef-prepared dishes and local wines. Piazza Family Wines makes Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, while Stolpman Vineyards specializes in Syrahs and Roussanne grown with organic, sustainable practices. Beckmen Vineyards, Santa Barbara County's first biodynamic vineyard, produces small-batch Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc. For lodging, The Inn at Mattei's Tavern is an Auberge Collection boutique resort. Originally a stagecoach stop founded in 1886, it now has private rooms with working fireplaces and clawfoot tubs, farm-to-table cuisine at Mattei's Tavern, and a spa in the Lavender Barn.

Near the San Gorgonio Pass in Southern California's Inland Empire, about 17 miles east of Redlands, is Cherry Valley. In June and July, the local 123 Farm hosts its Lavender Festival, with live music on select evenings, lavender-inspired food and drinks, and a chance to roam the lavender fields at sunset. To the north, Oak Glen's Parrish Pioneer Ranch is an apple ranch with shops, a restaurant, an artists' gallery, and seasonal attractions. Wildwood Canyon State Park has groves of old-growth interior live oaks, hike-bike and equestrian trails, and wildlife like black bears, black-tailed jackrabbits, mountain lions, and red-tailed hawks. Closer to town, Bogart Regional Park has trails for hikers, bikers, and horseback riders, plus campsites, picnic areas, a fishing pond, and pet-friendly day-use space. For a full farm-life experience, Khyra Beaucrest Ranch is an equestrian estate with an eight-bedroom house suited to families and larger groups, plus a swimming pool, pickleball courts, and a quiet pond.

Laguna Beach sits roughly halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego, and this Orange County town leans hard into its artistic heritage. For 2026, the Festival of Arts Fine Art Show runs July 7 to September 3 with work by more than 100 Orange County artists, while the Pageant of the Masters runs July 9 to September 4 with its tableau vivant evening show, where art comes to life. The Sawdust Art Festival features over 180 local artists alongside live demonstrations, music, and classes. Year-round, the Laguna Art Museum holds more than 3,500 works by California artists plus rotating exhibitions. Heading south on Pacific Coast Highway, Treasure Island Beach is a scenic stretch of coastline good for swimming, skimboarding, and tidepooling. Right by it, Montage Laguna Beach is Orange County's five-star oceanfront resort, with beachy rooms and suites, on-site dining, and Spa Montage.

Del Mar is a small coastal city in North San Diego County, about 22 miles north of downtown San Diego, but it hosts some of Southern California's biggest summer events. The San Diego County Fair runs June 10 to July 5 in 2026 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, with concerts, carnival rides, fair food, and arts and crafts exhibits. In mid-July, the Del Mar Racetrack opens for horse racing season and runs through September. For nature, you can pair Torrey Pines State Beach for swimming and surfing with the adjacent Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve for hikes through rare Torrey pine groves along the coastal bluffs. In town, Del Mar Plaza is the spot for boutiques and dining. Across Highway 101 from Del Mar Plaza, L'Auberge Del Mar has California-style rooms, coastal cuisine at its Adelaide restaurant, and treatments at Spa L'Auberge.

California Is a Big State With a Big Welcome

California has plenty of small towns worth a visit. There's Healdsburg, the Sonoma County wine country town that's as beautiful as it is flavorful. South of there, Mill Valley has a welcoming Pride festival and an autumn film festival. Up in the Sierras, Mammoth Lakes keeps things going all summer with community festivals and hiking trails into the nearby wilderness. On the Central Coast, Paso Robles and Los Olivos serve up world-class wines and great scenery. And in Southern California, Laguna Beach showcases serious artistic talent, while Del Mar delivers the San Diego County Fair and the fairgrounds racetrack. Whatever you're after, expect a friendly welcome across this golden state.
