The Best Small Towns in Minnesota to Chill Out

Minnesota is a grand state, situated against the impressive Lake Superior and bordering Canada to its north. Minnesota is widely known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes," and visitors to the area quickly find that the nickname is no exaggeration. There are lakes and riverways throughout the state, making it an ideal spot for vacationers who love the water. Yet, there are also lush woodlands and intriguing historic destinations that make the state a popular place to visit. With so much to do, you are sure to find a place to chill out and unwind in any of these towns.

Grand Marais

The shores of Grand Marais are the perfect place to relax and chill out. A stay at East Bay Suite puts guests on the shores of East Bay with bedroom suites that stare out onto the waters. Guests can take a short walk south to find multiple scenic spots along the neighboring Grand Marais Harbor. Artist's Point is a small rock peninsula that juts out into Lake Superior, offering photo-friendly shores. Guests can stroll the beach as they head along the peninsula to Grand Marais Lighthouse. This pyramid-shaped lighthouse, built in 1885, sits at the end of the harbor breakwater, offering casual afternoon walks and photo opportunities. After a day outside, you can retreat to town for an evening at Voygaeur Brewing Company. The taproom serves up cold drinks, and guests can enjoy views of the bay while enjoying sliders, tacos, and other pub fare.

Red Wing

The town of Red Wing is close to too many bodies of water to name, though some of the most notable are the Mississippi River and the aptly named Red Wing Bay. Relaxing days are just ahead at Bay Point Park, which features walking paths that wind alongside the bay. The park is just down the road from the Red Wing Brewery, the first brewery in Red Wing to open its doors since 1951. You can take a leisurely walk to enjoy pizzas and calzones before enjoying one of the many drinks on tap. Afterward, you will be just ten minutes from Moondance Inn. Located in the heart of town, this bed and breakfast serves a hearty breakfast for guests to enjoy. The rooms are exquisitely appointed in an attempt to preserve the historic charm of the building, which has stood since 1874.

Ely

Ely is another destination for those who love the water. On the north is Shagawa Lake, and in town, you can find Miners Lake. The Grand Ely Lodge Resort sits between these two and offers spacious suites, along with amenities such as a dry sauna and wet bar. From the lodge, it is not far to the Trezona Trail, which wraps around Miner's Lake. Hikers can enjoy the trail and views of the lake, as well as the historic mining pit and old mine shaft that gave the lake its name. Not surprisingly, the Pioneer Mine Museum sits just north of the lake and depicts the mining history of the region, including exhibits that highlight how mining was conducted and what life was like for the miners. Those who would rather hit the water can head to Semer's Beach Park, whose sandy shores line Shagawa Lake. Guests are free to take a dip or enjoy a game of volleyball,

Lanesboro

Small Lanesboro is the perfect place to relax, and the Root River Inn and Suites is the ideal place to begin any stay in town. A boutique hotel in downtown Lanesboro, this establishment has previously won a TripAdvisor Traveller's Choice Award for its high quality. Some theme rooms pay tribute to the town's railroad history, while others stand empty among the trees or sit right next to nearby shops. Guests can rent a tandem bike and set out for the nearby Root River State Trail. The trail stretches out for 42 miles along the Root River, but you do not have to travel too far before reaching the Sylvan Park Campgrounds. While the park is open to campers, guests can arrive throughout the day to fish on Sylvan Park Pond or take a walk along the historic Bunny Trail. You can then take your bike back up Parkway Avenue to Pedal Pushers Café for mouth-watering delights, such as a mango shrimp rice bowl or pulled pork and slaw.

Visitors arriving in Stillwater will find relaxing times at the Hotel Crosby, which provides views of the adjacent St. Croix River. Guests can relax on the outdoor patio and take in the sights or dine at the MatchStick Restaurant and Spirits, which features classic cocktails and wine, along with burgers and sandwiches. From there, you can take a casual walk along the river, stopping at Lowell Park for the best view of the historic Stillwater Lift Bridge. The bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is open to pedestrians who want picture-perfect views of the river. Nearby, you can head out by pontoon boat through Stillwater Boat Rentals. A pontoon boat trip along the river provides a chance to pass under the bridge while spotting eagles and owls in the air and deer and beavers along the shore.

New Ulm

New Ulm is a cozy little city situated between the Minnesota River to the north and the Cottonwood River to the south. Along the Cottonwood River, guests will find Flandrau State Park. Guests will find a sandy-bottom swimming pond and plenty of scenic overlooks. However, the unique stone houses that dot the park are particularly interesting sites that are holdovers from when the Works Progress Administration operated in the area during the construction of the nearby dam. Not far away, you can walk along Siou Trail and the shops and dining destinations there. The Fusion Bar and Grill serves up everything from pizza and wings to alfredo pasta and salmon. When you are ready to relax for the night, you can retire to the Bingham Hall Bed and Breakfast. This historic bed and breakfast, first built in 1893 by the Bingham family, today offers period-appropriate rooms with luxurious trappings and, of course, a meal to greet you in the morning.

Minnesota truly is a place of great beauty and culture. The St. Croix River Valley boasts parks and wineries, while towns around Lake Superior enjoy incredible views of its vast waters. Towns in the region boast historic destinations, such as the Pioneer Mine Museum, that celebrate the region's rich history.
