The smallest town on the list, Skagway, is home to barely 1,100 residents in this historic small town. Nevertheless, it undoubtedly hosts one of Alaska’s most memorable main streets, still authentic despite hosting thousands of travelers and cruise passengers per year. Along Broadway and State Street, visitors can stroll amidst preserved Gold Rush-era buildings as they shop, dine, and grab a drink at historic spots like the landmark Red Onion Saloon, which has been serving thirsty visitors since 1898. It’s also convenient to take in local history at spots like Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, and the departure point for the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway, which winds through the breathtaking landscapes surrounding the town. Skagway's small size means the benefits of the main street area extend throughout most of town, which is easily walkable for those looking to wander.

Sitka stands out for the unique combination of frontier vibes and authentic Russian heritage, which visitors can experience at spots like the architecturally impressive St. Michael the Archangel Orthodox Cathedral, the historic Russian Bishop's House, as well as the Sitka National Historical Park, which preserves unique Native American history as well. Those who’d like to learn about the natural inhabitants of this gorgeous area can pop into the Sitka Sound Science Center, an aquarium, hatchery, and research center focused on local fish and wildlife. Ketchikan developed in this seemingly random spot due to the unique location at the start of the so-called Inside Passage, a breathtaking, glacier-carved pathway between Puget Sound and the Gulf of Alaska. Although there is a named Main Street, the entire compact district (including Front Street and other nearby thoroughfares) offers a variety of attractions. Perhaps the best known is Creek Street, a historic cluster of restaurants, cafes, art galleries, shops, and other local businesses set along a boardwalk over the waterway that gives the town its name. Meanwhile, the nearby Southeast Alaska Discovery Center offers a fun, educational way to learn about the human and natural influences on this area. Another popular cruise stop, the number of visitors keeps the downtown district bustling, whether you’re simply strolling the waterfront, grabbing a bite or a drink at the numerous restaurants and cafes, or cheering on the competitors at the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show.

Seward

Although many may travel to Seward as a jumping-off point for nearby Kenai Fjords National Park, they’ll be pleasantly surprised by the town’s 4th Avenue main street corridor. It runs the length of this narrow town, from the marina and Kenai Fjords National Park Visitor Center at the north to a charming historic district on the south end, full of shops, restaurants, and hotels, as well as the Alaska SeaLife Center, a popular museum and aquarium dedicated to showcasing local fish and other wildlife. Nearby, Waterfront Park provides a place to stroll along Resurrection Bay and enjoy views of the mountains that soar above the town’s inland side.

Unlike many Alaska towns, Talkeetna lies inland, near Denali State Park, the lesser-known cousin of the national park on the opposite side of the mountain. Although it might not be the most densely packed Main Street, it’s a truly unforgettable and distinct district. Visitors can learn about the area’s rich heritage at the Talkeetna Historical Society before experiencing it firsthand with some shopping at Nagley's Store, which has been serving locals and visitors for more than a century. After a stroll exploring the authentic frontier architecture and charming local businesses, relax at Talkeetna Riverfront Park, offering views of three breathtaking rivers combining into one.
