10 Biggest Exporting States In The United States

Other than being the second-largest American state by both population and area, Texas is the top exporting state in the country.

The United States is the second biggest exporter on the planet right behind China. The U.S. managed to export products worth $1.666trillion in 2018. The country's exports had increased by 7.3% from 2017 to 2018 and by 10.7% from 2015 to 2018. The country's most valuable exports in 2018 were automobile parts, crude oil, petroleum, vehicles, and electro-medical equipment, among others. Shipments from the top-20 exporting states in 2018 were worth over $1.608trillion, representing 81.8% of the country's total exports. Some of America's major trading partners include Canada, Germany, China, Japan, and Mexico, among others.

Top 10 Exporting American States

Texas

Other than being the second-largest American state by both population and area, Texas is the top exporting state in the country. The value of this state's exports equals 19.6% of the country's exports in 2018. Texas exported goods worth $315billion to other parts of the world in 2018. The value of the Lone Star State's exported products in 2018 increased by 19.2% from 2017 to 2018. The Lone Star State's exported products accounted for 17.8% of the state's GDP. Some of the top exports from Texas are Crude oils ($38.7billion), miscellaneous petroleum-oils ($28.1billion), light petroleum-oils ($24.7billion), liquefied-propane ($13.2billion) and computer accessories and parts ($10.8billion) among others.

California

Other than being the most populous American state, California is the second biggest exporter in the country. California managed to ship goods worth $178.2billion in 2018. The value of this state's exports increased by 7.9% from 2015 to 2018. California's exports contributed about 6.6% of the state's GDP in 2018. California's top exports include aircrafts ($7.3billion), diamond ($5.5billion), shelled almond ($1.9billion), integrated circuit ($3.4billion), and computer accessories and parts ($3.2billion), among others. California's top trading partners are Mexico, Canada, and North America.  

New York

New York is the fourth-most populous American state and one of the third top exporting American states. New York exported goods worth $81.68billion in 2018. New York's total exports improved by 4.6% from 2017 to 2018. The value of this state's exported goods equals 4.9% of the country's total exported products. New York's total export in 2018 accounted for 4.8% of this state's real GDP. Some of the most valuable exports include diamond ($13.3billion), drawings and paintings ($8.5billion0, gold ($5.2billion), aircrafts ($1.2billion), and jewelry ($5.7billion) among others. New York's top trading partners include Canada, China, Britain, Switzerland, and Hong Kong, among others.

Washington

Washington State is the fourth largest exporter in the United States right behind New York, California, and Texas. Washington managed to ship goods worth $77.97billion around the globe in 2018. The value of Washington's exports in 2018 improved by 1.7% from 2017 to 2018. Washington's exports in 2018 accounted for about 13.5% of the state's real GDP. Washington State shipped a considerable percentage of their exports to China, Japan, and Canada. Some of Washington's valuable exports are aircraft ($41.8billion), soya beans ($2.4billion), corn ($3.7billion), wheat ($2billion), and petroleum oils ($1.2billion) among others.  

Louisiana

Louisiana is one of the top exporting states in the country that is situated in the southeastern region. Louisiana had the twenty-fourth biggest GDP in the country in 2018 ($255.49billion). Louisiana managed to export goods worth $67billion in 2018. The value of Louisiana's exports in 2018 increased by 16.2% from 2017. Louisiana shipped a huge percentage of their exports to Mexico, Netherlands, and South Korea. Some of the most valuable exports from Louisiana are soya beans ($8.6billion), petroleum oils (15.3billion), crude petroleum oils ($8.6billion), and corn ($4.9billion), among others.

Illinois

Other than having the fifth-largest GDP in the country, Illinois was the sixth biggest exporting state in the United States. The GDP of Illinois was $879.95billion in 2018. Illinois managed to export goods worth $65.5billion to other parts of the globe in 2018. Illinois's total exports grew by 0.3% from 2017 to 2018. The value of this state's export accounted for 3.9% of the country's total export. Illinois's top trading partners are China, Germany, and Canada, among others. The most valuable exports from Illinois in 2018 are light petroleum oils ($3.2billion), cell phones ($1.24billion), miscellaneous medication ($1.3billion), and aircrafts ($1.15billion) among others.

Michigan

Michigan had a GDP of about $537.09billion in 2018 and managed to export goods worth $58billion to other parts of the globe. Michigan's exports decreased by 3.2% from 2017 to 2918. Michigan's leading trading partners include Canada, China, and Mexico. Michigan is the hub for the automotive industry in the country thanks to the 3main automobile companies based in the Detroit metropolitan region. Therefore, some of its top exports include large vehicles ($38.6billion), small gas-powered trucks ($48.1billion), automobile body parts ($29.5billion), and aircraft ($11billion) among others.

Florida

Other than being the third most populous American state, Florida is one of the top exporting states that managed to ship goods worth $57billion in 2018. Florida's export improved by 6.2% from 2015 to 2018 and by 4.2% since 2017. The value of this state's exported goods accounted for 3.3% of American's total exported goods in 2018. Some of the top exports from Florida in 2018 were gold ($billion), cell phones ($2.9billion), and aircraft ($6.6billion) among others. Florida's top trading partner is Brazil, Mexico, and Canada.

Ohio

Other than being the seventh most-populous American state, Ohio had the seventh-highest GDP in 2018. Ohio managed to ship commodities worth $54billion around the globe. The value of Ohio's exports increased by 5.9% from 2015 to 2018. Ohio's exports in 2018 accounted for 3.3% of the country's total exports. Ohio's exports represented 7.9% of the state's real GDP. Ohio ships a huge percentage of its exports to Canada, China, and Mexico. Some of the most valuable exported goods from Ohio include large vehicles ($1.6billion), aircraft ($5.2billion), soya beans ($1.6billion), and small automobiles ($1.12billion) among others.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania had the sixth-highest GDP ($803.3billion) in 2018 and managed to export goods worth $41billion to other parts of the world. Pennsylvania's exports increased by 4.1% from 2015 to 2018. Pennsylvania is the tenth-biggest exporting state in the country behind Ohio and Florida. The value of this state's exports equals 2.5% of the country's total exports in 2018. Pennsylvania shipped a huge percentage of its exports to Canada, Britain, Mexico, and China. Some of the most valuable exports from Pennsylvania are coal ($2.7billion), vaccines ($1.3billion), liquefied propane ($1billion), and aircrafts  ($759million), among others.
