10 Amazing Washington Day Trips That Are Worth The Drive In 2025

The state of Washington offers numerous fantastic day trips that are well worth the drive time in 2025. Starting from Seattle, which is a thriving metropolis of just over 737,000 people, you can travel for two to three hours and access wonderful and interesting attractions. They don’t call Washington the Evergreen State for nothing. Lush, verdant national parks, spectacular waterfalls, stunning mountains, and forested islands are all within reach. Plus, cultural sites, including a Bavarian village and intriguing museums, are just around the bend.

Mount Rainier National Park

Mount Rainier has the most glaciers of any mountain in the contiguous United States. It’s also an active volcano and the highest mountain in Washington. Drive southeast from Seattle for less than two hours, and you cannot miss the immense, snowbound peak. This is a superb getaway for nature lovers.

In the northwest corner of the park, you can access the Carbon River Rain Forest Nature Trail year-round. The trail goes for a leisurely 0.6 miles out-and-back, over silvery brooks and through primeval old-growth forest with massive ferns and moss-cloaked conifers. Elsewhere, the Fremont Lookout trail offers a panoramic view of Mount Rainier. At 5.6 miles round-trip, you will be rewarded with an epic and inspiring look at the mountain and the surrounding wilderness. To complete your day trip, consider dining at the National Park Inn in Longmire, the only restaurant in the park open year-round. The menu features signature flavors of the Northwest, including Alaskan salmon and bison meatloaf.

Leavenworth

Leavenworth is a delightful Bavarian-style village located about two and a half hours east of Seattle. You can visit the Nutcracker Museum. It boasts the world’s most extensive nutcracker collection, comprising over 9,000 pieces, many of which are hand-forged. Or raise your stein and make a prost during Oktoberfest. In 2025, the town will have three stages set up in front of two beer gardens at Festhalle and Front Street Park. The celebration promises festive German music, dancing, and of course, the ceremonial tapping of the kegs.

If you’re looking for a thrill and a beautiful view to boot, Leavenworth Adventure Park has an alpine roller coaster and a climbing wall. The park is located near the Icicle Mini Golf course. You are welcome to treat your kids to a giant cookie at Ludwig’s before adventuring out to take in more of Leavenworth’s attractions. Pet the reindeer at Leavenworth Reindeer Farm and feel the soft down on their antlers. Next, round out your day trip with a visit to the Greater Leavenworth Museum. There, you will learn the fascinating history of how the town transformed from a railroad waypoint and logging town to a Bavarian village.

Snoqualmie Falls

If you’re looking for a quick but rewarding day trip, Snoqualmie Falls is only about 45 minutes east of Seattle. The famous waterfall was featured in the opening credits of the cult TV show Twin Peaks. It is 268 feet high and up to 150 feet wide at peak water level.

It attracts around 1.5 million visitors annually. An observation deck gives you a prime view of the roaring, plummeting water. Plus, you can walk your dog in the two-acre park. Come at the right time, and you might be able to snag one of two picnic tables for a picnic, or just spread out a blanket on the grass.

Lopez Island - San Juan Islands

One fantastic thing about Lopez Island is that, departing from Seattle, you can get there via car and ferry in under three hours. As one of the three San Juan Islands, Lopez has the beauty and relaxed island charm. Any of the San Juans are day-trip worthy, but Lopez is the closest, so you’ll have more time.

In Lopez Village, you can enjoy a farm-to-table meal at the acclaimed Ursa Minor restaurant. Chef Nick Coffey collaborates with local fishers, foragers, and farmers to create an evolving and inventive menu of small plates and grab-and-go sandwiches. Also in the village, the Chimera Gallery is an artist’s cooperative featuring handcrafted art, jewelry, and pottery by local artists. The Lopez Island Historical Society & Museum is a great site to learn about the island’s history. Be sure to make a reservation if you want to take your car on the ferry from Anacortes to Lopez Island. Otherwise, biking is a great option to get around the island.

Olympic National Park

Olympic National Park is so full of grandeur that it can be hard to know where to start. Head west from Seattle for just over two hours, and you are smack dab in the Olympic Wilderness. The Hoh Rainforest awaits west of Mount Olympus, with hikes through incredibly lush spruce forestland. When winter descends in November, grab your skis and strap in for the wonder and glory of sailing through powder at Hurricane Ridge.

Elsewhere, you can also access the Quinault Rainforest in just under three hours. Take a short but scenic drive through Quinault Valley, witnessing the verdant countryside, or hike the Maple Glade trail, which forms a half-mile loop through a moss-drenched grove of bigleaf maples.

Tacoma Museum District

It takes less than an hour to travel from Seattle to Tacoma. Upon arrival, a plethora of first-rate and fascinating museums await. The Museum of Glass, situated adjacent to the Thea Foss Waterway, is a visually stunning highlight. From downtown Tacoma, you can take the Chihuly Bridge of Glass, a variegated and prismatic overpass that spans 500 feet with crystal towers at its center. The Seaform Pavilion transports you beneath a glass ocean teeming with over 2,000 glass creations.

The Tacoma Art Museum is right next door, featuring a variety of impressive exhibits, such as Echoes of the Floating World, a collection of 18th- to 20th-century woodblock prints. You can round out your day trip at LeMay - America’s Car Museum, an homage to the automobile that MSN recognized as one of the 10 Best Automotive Museums in the world.

Whidbey Island

Whidbey Island is located one hour north of Seattle, accessible by car and ferry. Or, the public transit option takes about three hours. Deception Pass State Park is a fantastic place to do some sightseeing or hiking on the island’s north point. The park features old-growth forests, similar to those found in Kukutali Preserve, and rugged cliffs that offer superb views of the Salish Sea. The Sand Dunes Interpretive Trail is an accessible 0.8-mile loop where you can learn about island flora.

The island is your oyster after some park time. If spirits are your thing, Whidbey Island Distillery in Langley is a celebrated stop where you can taste the Blackberry Liqueur and discover why it received a 98 rating from the Beverage Testing Institute. You’re not far from Chocolate Flower Farm, where you can buy chocolates and handmade jam, basking in the scent of lavender and chocolate cosmos flowers. For more hiking and epic views, finish off your day trip at Fort Casey Historical Park, where you can see the gorgeous and well-kept lighthouse that was built in 1903.

North Cascades National Park

Speaking of rugged, the untouched wilderness of North Cascades National Park is only about two-and-a-half hours east of Seattle. Diablo Lake Overlook, in the heart of the park, is a prime spot to stretch your legs and enjoy a picnic after the drive. In summer, the lake is a shimmering turquoise gem set in conifer-clad mountains.

To get there, you take Highway 20, which threads through the park and is worth the drive no matter what time of year. For an easy yet still sublime hike, try Thunder Knob Trail (3.6 miles out-and-back). You’ll be rewarded with views of Davis Peak, Colonial Peak, and Sourdough Mountain.

Ellensburg

The town of Ellensburg is packed with Western small-town charm. Head east from Seattle for two hours and you’re there. The drive through Kittitas Valley is a feast for the eyes, with sprawling farmland, green hills, and distant peaks.

In Ellensburg, the Rodeo Hall of Fame has free admission and all the rodeo lore your heart could ask for.
