7 Safest Towns In Missouri For Senior Living

Missouri has several smaller towns where retirees look for a mix of safety, manageable living costs, and easy access to local activities. In Poplar Bluff, cultural stops such as the Historic Rodgers Theatre and the Mo-Ark Regional Railroad Museum give the town a steady calendar of community events. Cottleville offers a different setting, with a compact, walkable downtown and gathering places like The Cottle Village Farmstead Distillery that help keep the town socially active. Some communities lean toward quiet lakeside surroundings, while others focus on lively main streets with restaurants, shops, and local festivals. Together, these towns show why many retirees choose Missouri for a slower pace without giving up everyday amenities.

The gateway to the Ozarks and home to roughly 16,250 people, Poplar Bluff was ranked the second-safest town in Missouri by Safewise in 2026. There were zero homicides, and only 3 robberies reported in all of 2025, well below the national average. There is also a full-service hospital right in the heart of the town: The Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

Poplar Bluff is also riddled with history, which you can learn about at one of its many museums, including the Mo-Ark Regional Railroad Museum and the Poplar Bluff History Museum. The Margaret Harwell Art Museum, which showcases local artists and their work, is another fun exhibit.

Overall, the town offers a range of recreational and cultural options, including visiting one of its local parks or taking in a show at the Historic Rodgers Theatre. The Black River Coliseum is another venue for sporting events and concerts, and the downtown district has great places to drink, dine, and enjoy a night out.

Cottleville

Another town that ranks among the safest in all of Missouri, according to Safehome.org. To put things in perspective, in 2024, a total of 4 crimes were reported. And only one of them was a violent crime. Even though it is a small town of roughly 5,750 residents, this is still extremely low and reflects positively on Cottleville's overall safety. Progress West Hospital, a full-service emergency hospital, is also about 3-5 miles away.

As for things seniors can do, not only is there a Senior Center, but the downtown is highly walkable. Cottleville is a golf cart town, allowing residents to travel short distances without a car. There are also some great venues for a night out, such as The Cottle Village Farmstead Distillery, which hosts live music, trivia nights, and other events. Other highly rated restaurants and places to grab a drink include Bemo’s Grill, Le Champ de Fleurs, Three Kings Public House, and Exit 6 Pub and Brewery.

What Odessa offers seniors is a balance of affordability and low crime, along with plenty of fun things to do. It feels safe without being sleepy, with a crime rate of 9.54 per 1,000 people reported in 2024. Although higher than other towns on our list, it is still well below the national average for that year. It is home to the Odessa Health Care Center, a nursing home that specializes in senior care, and the Odessa Medical Group, which provides primary care to residents.

The Odessa Senior Center is an obvious stop for seniors looking for activities, as well as Railroad Park for a relaxing afternoon. Dyer Park also has great facilities, including a pool, a pavilion, tennis and basketball courts, a baseball diamond, and even a rodeo area. Antiquing is popular in this area, with Odessa being home to several Antique shops, including Silver Fox Merchants, BC Antiques, and Bates City Antiques. The Odessa County Winery offers locally produced wines and seasonal events.

Ballwin is another town with a strikingly low violent crime rate of only 0.55 per 1,000 people. It has an overall crime rate of 5.25 per 1,000 people, which is well below the national average. It’s home to a little over 31,000 people and has a small-town feel, but it isn’t so small that there is nothing to do.

Another bonus for seniors is that Ballwin is home to two Mercy Clinic Primary Care facilities, as well as The Rehabilitation Institution of St. Louis - West County, an institution specializing in care for people recovering from strokes, neurological conditions, spinal injuries, and more.

There are several parks in town for outdoor activities, including Castlewood State Park, Vlasis Park, Twin Oaks Park, and New Ballwin Park. Ballwin is also where Lion’s Choice, a fast-food chain specializing in roast beef sandwiches, was first established.

And although there isn’t a very active nightlife downtown, there are still a few pubs and fine dining restaurants, as well as the Sky Music lounge, if you want to hear live music.

Savannah

Another small town with a low overall crime rate of 5.9 in 2024. A small population gives Savannah a small-town feel, but unlike other small towns in Missouri, it has a local clinic. The Savannah Medical Clinic offers greater comfort and easier access for seniors who worry about their medical needs.

The Andrew County Museum and Historical Society serves as a central community venue. They host lots of entertaining events to keep residents busy. There is also the Savannah City Lake for fishing and summertime fun, as well as a senior center where you can sit down, eat, and enjoy games and entertainment. Specifically for seniors, the Savannah Senior Center offers regular meal programs, fitness classes, and social events throughout the year.

Battlefield

Despite its name, Battlefield is far from a literal battlefield. It is a quiet place that had a reported total crime rate 78% below the national average in 2024. Although the number of assaults increased in the last year, it’s worth noting that there were zero homicides and only 1 robbery reported in the last 5 years. Home to roughly 6,200 residents, the name of the town is an homage to the Battle of Wilson’s Creek, which took place nearby. It was a significant battle in the American Civil War and is now memorialized as Wilson Creek National Battlefield. It is a popular tourist attraction featuring a 5-mile driving tour, a visitor center, and hiking and biking trails.

It is also very close to Springfield, MO (roughly a 10-15 minute drive), which has a reasonable crime rate for a larger city. Springfield is home to hospitals, places to shop, fine dining, and all the amenities you need.

Hollister

Hollister is a better fit here if you want a small town that still keeps seniors close to bigger-city conveniences. The town had an estimated 2024 population of 4,659, and its 2024 offense totals come out to about 2.36 violent crimes and 12.02 property crimes per 1,000 residents. That is not as low as the very smallest ultra-quiet towns on this list, but it is still a manageable rate for a community that sits just outside Branson and gives residents easier access to shopping, dining, and medical care.

The town also gives retirees easy ways to stay active without needing an overstuffed calendar. Recent city updates highlight continued improvements at Chad A. Fuqua Memorial Park, including upgrades to the walking trail, and Hollister’s live feed also points to regular community activity around historic Downing Street, including arts events in downtown. Add in the quick hop to Branson, and Hollister works well for seniors who want a quieter setting with simple day-to-day convenience.
