These 11 Colorado towns are full of unexpected surprises and interesting attractions, and each is well worth a visit.

Nestled within the Rocky Mountains is Nederland, a quirky mountain town. One of its whimsical family-friendly attractions is the Carousel of Happiness, a merry-go-round with hand-carved animals that move to the music of a 1913 Wurlitzer band organ. If you’re looking to take advantage of the outdoors, drive 20 minutes from the center of town to the Forsythe Canyon Trailhead, where a hike takes you through some rocky terrain and waterfall views.

Back in town, enjoy a rustic downtown experience by browsing the locally owned shops, including Alpaca Store & More, which specializes in products made from genuine alpaca wool. To relax at the end of the day, grab yourself a well-deserved beer from the Very Nice Brewing Company, a friendly, local small-batch craft brewery where you might be lucky enough to catch some live music alongside your pint.

Manitou Springs is situated at the base of Pikes Peak and is known for its free-spirited, artistic atmosphere, reflected in its official tagline, "Keep Manitou Weird." Thanks to its mountain setting, the town is home to several naturally carbonated mineral springs, with public taps located throughout the area where you can sample slightly different mineral compositions and tastes, as well as fill up your water bottle for the day ahead. To start off with some fun and games, visit one of the largest historic arcades, Manitou Springs Penny Arcade.

Since Manitou Springs is a Certified Colorado Creative District, take in the arts and culture at the Manitou Art Center, wander around the gallery, or take a class in ceramics or painting. For some incredible views of the mountain, ride the Pikes Peak Cog Railway and enjoy some freshly baked donuts from the Summit Visitor Center while taking in the scenery.

Crestone is located at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and is one of Colorado’s most spiritual towns. One of its most distinctive landmarks is the Crestone Ziggurat, a tower where visitors can climb a spiral ramp to the top, reflect in its peaceful, picturesque surroundings, and arrange rocks at its base as a form of meditation and intention-setting. Ancient ziggurats were stepped pyramids built in Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq) that served as towering temples devoted to the gods.

For an adventurous hike, take the North Crestone Trail #744, which eventually leads to North Crestone Lake with stunning alpine views. Then visit the Crestone Artisans Gallery to browse handcrafted works by local artists and pick up a unique souvenir, such as a silk painting or a piece of precious-stone jewelry. To refuel with wholesome, organic food, stop by the quaint Our Food is Art restaurant.

To absorb the mountain views, ride the free Telluride Mountain Village Gondola between downtown Telluride and Mountain Village. Stroll along Colorado Avenue to explore the clothing and homeware boutiques, and satisfy your sweet tooth at Telluride Truffle Artisan Chocolate, where you can enjoy rich, in-house-crafted chocolates. Lake City sits in Hinsdale County, a remote county with huge stretches of land untouched by roadways, making it an extremely remote destination. It has somewhat of a grisly lore tied to cannibalism, centered on the story of Alferd Packer, who was convicted for murdering and eating five fellow gold prospectors while surviving a harsh winter in 1874. By visiting the Hinsdale County Museum, you can find out more about the history, and there is a collection of Alferd Packer memorabilia.

There are also lighthearted activities such as Sweety's Wildlife Preserve Art Zoo, a miniature golf course built in memory of an orphaned mule deer named Sweety, befriended by artist Karen Hurd, who created over 300 life-sized animals painted on wood and rocks throughout the course. Watch a current blockbuster or an old movie at the vintage Mountaineer Theatre, then get a good meal at Southern Vittles, serving classic American fare.

Creede is surrounded by the Rio Grande National Forest, with spectacular cliffs and aspen-covered landscapes framing the town. An unusual landmark that attracts travelers and is a great roadside photo opportunity is the World's Largest Fork, a 40-foot-long sculpture by artists Chev and Ted Yund on Highway 149. For a more eerie activity, drive along the Bachelor Loop, a 17-mile historic gravel loop that takes you through old mining ruins, ghost towns, and the Sunnyside Cemetery.

The downtown strip is also worth checking out, where you can find local gourmet food stores, clothing boutiques, and have a sip of wine at The Vintage Drift, a cozy wine bar. For some outdoor fun, the Inspiration Point Trail is a hiking route that begins right in town and, at the summit, offers majestic views of Creede and the San Juan Mountains.

Paonia, tucked in the North Fork Valley, is known locally as the “coolest” town in Colorado, brimming with artists, farmers, and winemakers. To enjoy the fruits of these local artisans' labor, there are plenty of spots to visit. Western Culture Farmstead & Creamery is a perfect place to start, where you can pet goats and stock up on various goat’s milk cheeses from manchego to feta. At Orchard Valley Farms & Market and Black Bridge Winery, you can sample wine, vinegar, and olive oil tastings and visit the farm market, picking up fresh vegetables and jams, and, in season, pick your own produce.

Take some time to explore Grand Avenue and browse clothing stores, bookstores, and inviting coffee shops. To wind down, grab an ice-cold beer at Paonia United Brewing Company, housed in a former historic church, and try one of the daring flavors, such as a chili ale!

Beyond its South Park ties, another attraction distinct to Fairplay is Rocky Mountain Cigar Company, a lounge where you can have a cigar, sip distilled spirits, and have a coffee. For a much-needed sit-down and bites after the action, settle in for some good food and cocktails at Slow Groovin BBQ, a popular family-owned restaurant.
