With picturesque landscapes, kindhearted locals, and undeniably charming towns, Wisconsin welcomes all visitors with open arms. While many consider cities such as Madison or Milwaukee to be the heart of the Dairy State, the soul of Wisconsin can be found in its small towns. The unique attributes and attractions of these small towns make exploring them truly worthwhile. From the rolling hills of New Glarus to Lake Michigan's shores in Ephraim to the marvelous historic sites and wineries of Pepin, the 11 towns listed here are among the best the state offers.

New Glarus

Just south of Madison lies one of the most unique and vibrant towns in Wisconsin. New Glarus makes those visiting feel as if they somehow traveled across the Atlantic to Switzerland. While this town is most well known for its heritage, it has many other attributes that make it stand out within the state. It is home to the famous New Glarus Brewing Co., where visitors can take self-guided tours of the brewery. After having a drink, the Swiss Historical Village Museum is a great stop to learn more about the history of the area. With 14 buildings, including a settler's log home, learn more about the town while being able to look at antiques that were left by settlers of the town. The famous Badger State Trail that goes from Madison to the border of Wisconsin-Illinois runs through New Glarus as well. Taking a short walk to enjoy the rolling hills and beautiful meadows is recommended by locals and visitors alike.

Hayward

One of the least appreciated areas of Wisconsin is the northern part of the state. Wisconsinites (Wisconsin Residents) will call this area "the Northwoods," and one of the most popular in the Northwoods is Hayward. With access to the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, it is easy to be drawn toward the hiking, fishing, camping, and boating that can be done in the area. The Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame is another must-visit, even for those who are not lovers of fishing. Besides being welcomed by a huge fiberglass muskie, looking at the variety of record-breaking fish may make you want to try your own luck in fishing. Canoeing across the Namekagon River is another way to take in the beautiful landscape. Also, try to spot some local birds, such as bald eagles or osprey!

Menomonie

Originally settled by the Sioux Indians and then the home of the largest lumber industry in the world, the town of Menomonie has seen its fair share of changes. While the downtown area surrounds the beautiful Lake Menomin, its small shops and restaurants will make everyone feel like they are home. Spending the day hiking the incredible trails of Hoffman Hills or walking along the Red Cedar Trail, there is something for all outdoor lovers to enjoy. The picturesque Mabel Tainter Center of the Arts is a marvel not just in architecture but also in the amazing plays and musicals that are performed there. If visiting in the summer or winter, it is natural to be drawn to the lake activities that go on at Lake Menomin, as well as the nearby Tainter Lake. From skiing in the summer to ice skating and ice fishing in the winter, the lakes provide entertainment for all!

Chippewa Falls

Along the powerful Chippewa River, the amazing town of Chippewa Falls is waiting to greet its visitors. This vibrant town welcomes nature lovers, food lovers, as well as those who love shopping. For those arriving from July 10 to 14, they will be allowed to enjoy the exciting Northern Wisconsin State Fair. From food to live music to rides, there is something for all ages at the fair! For those visiting at some other time, another great attraction is the Irvine Park Zoo. With over 300 acres of wilderness, guests can expect to spot exotic animals such as tigers, bears, and even cougars! This completely free zoo is run on private donations, and with plenty of playgrounds and picnic tables, it is a great place to spend the day! For those wanting to spend some time in nature, Lake Wissota State Park is a great spot to enjoy hiking, fishing, and cycling. With trails that can be easily finished in a single day, it is both beginner-friendly and beautiful!

Ephraim

Hidden away in the easternmost county in Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Michigan awaits the marvelous town of Ephraim. With attractions that will want people to stay year round, it is hard to be bored. During the summer, there are over 50 beaches that are available for the public to enjoy, with some of the more popular ones being Nicolet Bay Beach and Ridges Beach. It is possible to experience the Belgian influence in the area by visiting the beautifully rebuilt Belgian chapels in the area. To get a stunning view of the Lake Michigan Eagle Tower is a great stop! While enjoying the breathtaking view, taking some time to enjoy one of the many trails at Peninsula State Park is a must-do. Even in winter, this state park can be enjoyed by cross-country skiers, snowshoes, and snowmobilers! It is also encouraged to visit Anderson Dock, where they can write their names on the boards of the Hardy Gallery!

Sturgeon Bay

Staying in the beautiful Door County, the small shipbuilding town of Sturgeon Bay is awaiting visitors with open arms. This charming small town is well known for building small fishing boats to thousand-foot giants. It is possible to learn all about this small town's blue-collar work ethics at the Door County Maritime Museum. For those who want to get out and take some of the most incredible photos, Cave Point County Park is one of the most beautiful areas in the entire state. The park opened in 1943, and while walking along its stunning cliffs is a great option, do not be afraid to rent a kayak and explore it by water in the summer months! One of the most marvelous times of the year to visit the state is in the fall, and Sturgeon's Bay's jaw-dropping views during this season should not be missed. While enjoying the views, stopping by Robertson Orchards will give you a chance to hand pick apples and also an opportunity to enjoy some delicious apple cider.

Mineral Point

This small town was founded by miners from England's Cornwall region to mine both lead and zinc. When entering this town, many will notice the large number of galleries along the main streets. At the Longbranch Gallery and Wantoot Gallery, expect to see some incredible pieces of mixed media and American modern art. One of the most famous (and rightfully so) restaurants in the town is the Red Rooster Cafe, which is famous for its hand pies. The Mineral Point Railroad Museum is a great place to learn more about the history of the town's settlers and the importance that the railroad had in the area. For nature lovers, the Governor Dodge State Park is a great location to spend the day getting lost in the beauty of the forest.

Rhinelander

One unique thing when first arriving in the town of Rhinelander is the welcome statue of the fabled creature "the Hodag." This lively town is filled with plenty of activities for all ages to enjoy year-round. In the summer, it would be hard not to spend time at one of the many lakes in the area. At Hodag Park-Boom Lake, after spending a day in the water, Hodag Water Shows puts on some amazing displays that will get you wanting to try water skiing. Spending some time at the Rhinelander Historical Society is an excellent way to learn about this town's history (you may even learn a thing or two about the famous Hodag). While the town is active all year, fall is one of the most beautiful times of the year. One of the most recommended spots to visit is Holmboe Nature Preserve, and while it is beautiful year-round, the fall is especially amazing.

Baraboo

The small town of Baraboo may not be on everyone's itinerary when visiting Wisconsin. However, this active town has a rich and interesting history. Baraboo is often known as "Circus City'' mostly due to the fact that the famous Ringling Brothers called this small town their home. With over 160 separate businesses in its downtown area, there are a vast number of shops and events for those visiting this town to experience. From May to October, Baraboo hosts a Sunday Market with a number of different stalls to check out. One of the most famous outdoor attractions is Devil's Lake State Park. While being one of the largest parks in the state, there are a number of activities that can be done while visiting, such as hiking, fishing, camping, rock climbing, and even scuba diving! If lucky enough to be visiting in November, see if you will be able to attend the Downtown Baraboo Christmas Light Parade. This year, it is taking part on November 23, where marching bands, floats, and fun will be marching through the streets!

Fish Creek

Whether it be a quiet stroll through incredible trails or shopping along peaceful streets, the exciting town of Fish Creek is waiting. As one of the most walkable communities in the area, Fish Creek is an amazing town for shoppers. One of the best summer activities in Fish Creek has to be cherry-picking. As one of the best ways to get high-quality and fresh cherries, this activity is loved by all ages (and cherry lovers). While there are many farms in the area, Hyline Orchard is loved by visitors and locals alike. Another beloved summer activity is spending time along Nicolet Bay: soak up the sun, or get in the water and swim, kayak, or paddleboard! Renting a boat is also a common activity; if not comfortable driving a boat, there are a number of boat tours available to take part in.

Pepin

From historic sites to wineries to some of the most incredible waterfront activities, Pepin is ready to amaze. Pepin was once home to the historic author Laura Ingalls Wilder and currently houses the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum, where guests can learn about this great American author's early life. Visiting the birthplace of Laura Ingalls Wilder is available year-round. At the Villa Bellezza Winery, be transported to a villa in Italy. While here, enjoy incredible wine and Italian food, or even just go on a tour of this unique location. Only 30 minutes away is the Buena Vista Park. This park overlooks the Mississippi River and provides the perfect location to watch barges traveling up and down the Mississippi River. Hike, enjoy a picnic, and take time to relax and take in all of the beauty of this area while watching out for native birds such as eagles or robins!
