The Best Towns to Retire In Texas Near a State Park
A fishing pier lit for night fishing on Lake Texoma. A 425-foot dome of pink granite outside Fredericksburg. A waterfall drowned beneath the lake at Marble Falls. State parks give retirees in Texas something to look forward to on an ordinary Tuesday, and the best park towns back that up with a hospital, a senior center, and a downtown for everyday errands. Fredericksburg, where nearly a third of locals are 65 or older, is about 21 minutes from the summit trail at Enchanted Rock. Costs vary widely. Statewide, the median home value is $283,800 in Census Bureau estimates for 2020 to 2024, and owners without a mortgage pay a median $678 a month for taxes, insurance and utilities.
Denison

Eisenhower State Park is about 12 minutes from Denison, and around 7 miles from town on the bluffs above Lake Texoma. More than 4 miles of walking and biking trails wind through the park. One of the park's two fishing piers is lit for night fishing, with striped bass, crappie and catfish the usual catch. A sandy cove has swimming, and the bluffs give up fossils from an ancient sea floor. Back in town, the Downtown Denison Farmers Market fills the 700 block of Main Street on Saturdays, April through October, as it has since 2011.
Daily needs are close. Texoma Medical Center is a Level III trauma center with nationally recognized heart and stroke programs, cancer care, and orthopedics. Living here costs less than in much of the state. Denison's median home value of $180,900 is about a third below the state figure, and FBI data for 2025 put violent and property crime well under the Texas rates.
Livingston

The Escapees RV Club bought 27 acres in Livingston in 1984 for its national headquarters and its first RV park. Rainbow's End, and the club, founded in 1978, now counts more than 70,000 members. Fort Worth is to the east for anything Weatherford does not have.

Sulphur Springs opened a new city senior center in the spring of 2024, built with a $2.4 million state grant and $1.5 million in local bonds, and it serves the Meal-A-Day program. Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is about 21 minutes north, where the Summit Trail climbs a 425-foot dome of pink granite. Nearly 22 miles of trails cross the natural area, and its status as an International Dark Sky Park makes it a stargazing spot after dark. Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site, about 22 minutes east, operates the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm, where costumed rangers work a World War I-era farm, and bison and longhorns graze along the Pedernales River.
Hill Country Memorial Hospital has cardiology, a stroke center, oncology, a breast center and joint replacement through its Restore program. The Villages of Windcrest provides assisted living and memory care, and Knopp Healthcare operates assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing at multiple locations. The Golden Hub senior center serves a dine-in lunch at noon on weekdays and hosts exercise programs, clubs, and classes. Choosing A Texas Park Town For Retirement
Living near a Texas state park gives retirees more opportunities to spend an ordinary afternoon outdoors, fishing, hiking, or relaxing by the lake. But the park is only part of choosing where to settle. Housing prices vary considerably, and access to healthcare, senior services, and public safety deserves just as much attention. A beautiful park nearby is a bonus, but the town itself needs to be a good place to call home.
