12 Florida's Emerald Coast Towns Perfect For A Fresh Start

Lake DeFuniak, in DeFuniak Springs, is so nearly round that it looks drawn with a compass, and homes around it still cost far less than a beach condo. Florida's Emerald Coast is famous for sugar-white sand, but its best-known beach towns can carry price tags far above the state median. Just inland and along the bays, a different set of towns still offers room to settle in. Military bases, hospitals, and colleges give many of them a steady base of jobs. Homes in each one cost well below the region's beach hot spots, according to the Census Bureau.

DeFuniak Springs has the most affordable homes on this list, with a median value of about $201,000. The Walton County seat is built around Lake DeFuniak, a spring-fed lake that is almost perfectly round, and Victorian homes line the circular drive around its shore. In the late 1800s, the town hosted the Florida Chautauqua, a popular education and culture gathering, and the historic Chautauqua Hall of Brotherhood still stands by the lake. Healthmark Regional Medical Center provides hospital care, and each December, the lake glows with thousands of holiday lights during the town's Christmas Reflections celebration. The beaches of south Walton County are about a half-hour drive south.

Each pairs more affordable homes with a hospital nearby, steady jobs, and an easy drive to the Gulf. Before you move, research flood zones and hurricane insurance, compare commutes to the bases and beaches, and visit in both summer and winter to get a feel for daily life.
