Countries Of North Africa

North Africa is located at the northern edge of the African continent, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Red Sea and Suez Canal to the east. The region's boundaries are not universally defined, but the most common definition, used by the United Nations, includes six countries: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, and Sudan. A more restricted definition refers to the Maghreb, meaning "the west" in Arabic, typically encompassing Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya, and sometimes Mauritania. Egypt and Sudan, which are more connected to the Nile Valley and the Red Sea, are often regarded as a separate eastern group. In the larger "Middle East and North Africa" (MENA) context, these North African nations are grouped with Middle Eastern countries.

The Sahara, the world's largest hot desert, physically unites the region by covering most of each country. Meanwhile, the people tend to gather along the narrow Mediterranean coast and the Nile banks. The northwest is shaped by the Atlas Mountains, and the Nile River supports Egypt and Sudan in the east.

Algeria

The People's Democratic Republic of Algeria is Africa's largest country by land area, spanning 2,381,741 square kilometers, predominantly covered by the Sahara. Its population of approximately 47 million is mainly concentrated in the north along the Mediterranean coast and the Tell Atlas, where the capital and largest city, Algiers, is located. Arabic and Tamazight (Berber) are the official languages, and around 99% of Algerians are of Arab-Berber descent. Algeria is classified as an upper-middle-income nation, with its economy primarily reliant on oil and natural gas exports, and it possesses some of the continent's largest hydrocarbon reserves.

Egypt

Egypt, officially the Arab Republic of Egypt, is situated in the northeastern part of Africa and links to southwest Asia via the Sinai Peninsula, which crosses the Suez Canal on the Asian side. With over 110 million residents, it is the most populous nation in North Africa and the Arab world. However, the majority of its population resides in a small area along the Nile River and its delta, with the rest of the country being desert. Cairo, the capital and largest city, is where Arabic, the official language, is spoken. Egypt is renowned for its ancient civilization, having built pyramids and temples along the Nile over 4,000 years ago.

Libya

Libya is the fourth-largest country in Africa, covering approximately 1,759,540 square kilometers, with over 90% of its terrain being desert. Its population of around 7.5 million is mainly concentrated along the Mediterranean coast, especially in Tripoli, the capital and largest city, and in Benghazi to the east. The official language is Arabic, and Islam is the national religion. The economy relies heavily on oil, with Libya possessing the largest proven crude oil reserves in Africa. Since Muammar Gaddafi's overthrow in 2011, the country has experienced ongoing political divisions and armed conflicts.

Morocco

The Kingdom of Morocco is situated in the northwestern corner of Africa, separated from Spain by the narrow Strait of Gibraltar. Aside from Western Sahara, a territory Morocco controls and administers, the country's area is approximately 446,550 square kilometers; including Western Sahara, it expands to around 710,000 square kilometers. The population is roughly 38 million, mostly of Arab-Berber descent. Rabat is the capital city, while Casablanca is the largest and serves as the economic center. The official languages are Arabic and Tamazight, with Sunni Islam as the official religion. The Atlas Mountains extend across the entire length of Morocco, which has one of Africa's largest economies, driven by phosphate mining, manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism.

Sudan

Sudan spans approximately 1,861,484 square kilometers, ranking as Africa's third-largest country; it was the largest until South Sudan's independence in 2011. With an estimated population of 50 million, its capital, Khartoum, is located where the Blue Nile and White Nile converge to form the Nile River. The country’s official languages are Arabic and English. In 2020, Sudan officially separated religion from the state, ending its long-standing Islamic state status. However, it has been severely impacted by a civil war that began in 2023 between rival military factions, leading to one of the world's most significant displacement crises.

Tunisia

The Republic of Tunisia is the smallest among the six North African countries, covering 163,610 square kilometers along the Mediterranean coast. It borders Algeria to the west and Libya to the southeast. The country has a population of around 12 million, with its capital and largest city being Tunis, located near the ruins of ancient Carthage. Arabic is the official language. The northern landscape features the Tell Atlas and the Tunisian Dorsale, the northeastern extension of the Atlas Mountains, which ascend to Jebel ech Chambi at 1,544 meters, while the southern region transitions into the Sahara Desert. Tunisia is notable as the birthplace of the 2010-2011 uprising that sparked the broader Arab Spring.

Territories Of North Africa

Beyond the six sovereign states, several territories are linked to North Africa through geography or politics. The largest and most disputed is Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony, most of which Morocco now controls. The partially recognized Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic claims it as an independent country, leaving its status unresolved. Spain also controls two small enclaves on Morocco's Mediterranean coast, Ceuta and Melilla, plus some offshore islets. Further out, the Spanish Canary Islands in the Atlantic and Italy's Pelagie Islands in the Mediterranean are located near the African coast and are sometimes considered part of the region.
