Set on the shores of Lake Michigan in Chicago, the facility hosts trade shows, corporate meetings, and public expos in industries such as automotive, retail, travel and tourism, healthcare, and food service. An original complex opened on the site in 1960. It burned down in 1967, and several additions and renovations have taken place over the years.

Functioning more like a district than a traditional convention center, the complex includes the 4,000+ seat Arie Crown Theater and the 10,000-seat Wintrust Arena, as well as a rooftop garden and terrace. Its 32 multipurpose spaces can be reconfigured into 57 rooms operating at the same time, and the exhibition floor sits on a single level with 15 access points into the halls. Salon Jalisco II covers about 258,000 square feet (24,000 square meters), while the Salon Guadalajara is divisible into 10 column-free halls and seats up to 10,000 people in auditorium configuration.

The center is on Avenida Mariano Otero in the Verde Valle district of Guadalajara, Mexico, about 30 minutes from the international airport and 10 minutes from the historic downtown.

Expo Guadalajara opened in 1987 and handles a flow of more than 60,000 people a day, with a maneuvering yard that takes 65 trucks at once and approximately 1,900 parking spaces. Its best-known tenant is the Guadalajara International Book Fair, founded in 1987 by the University of Guadalajara and now the largest book fair in the Americas and the second largest in the world after Frankfurt. The center also hosts national and international congresses, trade fairs, and corporate events, and it operates one of the largest professional kitchens in Mexico.
