How High The Highest Mountain Pass Road In America Really Is

The usual answer is the Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway in Colorado, which tops out somewhere around 14,130 feet and is genuinely the highest paved road in North America. There is one problem with calling it the highest mountain pass road, which is that it is not a pass. A pass is a route over a range that connects somewhere to somewhere else. The Blue Sky road climbs 14 miles from Echo Lake, reaches a parking lot near the summit, and stops. It is a cul-de-sac with an exceptional view. If you require the road to actually go somewhere, the answer drops by about a thousand feet and gets considerably rougher.

The Headline Number

Mount Blue Sky, known as Mount Evans until the name was formally changed in 2023, rises to 14,264 feet in the Front Range. Colorado State Highway 5 runs 14.89 miles from Echo Lake up to a terminus near the top.

Published elevations for that terminus vary between about 14,130 and 14,140 feet, which is a ten-foot disagreement at the top of a road nobody can agree on the height of. The margin over Pikes Peak Highway is quoted as either 15 or 25 feet depending on which source you trust, meaning the two highest paved roads in North America are separated by roughly the length of a car.

A Pass Has To Go Somewhere

The distinction matters here because it is the whole question. A mountain pass is a low point in a ridge that lets a route cross from one valley to the next. It exists because people needed to get to the other side. A summit road exists because people wanted to be at the top, which is a completely different motivation and produces a completely different road.

Mount Blue Sky and Pikes Peak are summit roads. You drive up, you look at the view, you turn around and drive back down the same road. Nothing is on the other side, because there is no other side.

So What Is The Highest Actual Pass

That would be Mosquito Pass, at 13,185 feet, crossing the Mosquito Range between Leadville and Fairplay in central Colorado. It is 945 feet lower than the Blue Sky road and infinitely more of a pass.

It sits on the boundary between Lake and Park counties and on the divide between the Arkansas and South Platte rivers, which is the informal line between northern and southern Colorado east of the Continental Divide. It connects two real towns, which is the entire qualification.

It is also unpaved, rough, and passable only by proper four-wheel drive, off-road motorcycle or on foot, typically for a few months in summer. Two-wheel-drive vehicles encounter stream crossings and rocky sections that end the attempt.

Its Nickname Is Not Encouraging

Mosquito Pass is known locally as the Highway of Frozen Death, which is not a name anyone gives a road they are fond of. It earned it honestly. The route became a toll road in 1879, carrying stagecoaches, freighters and wagons toward the Leadville mining boom at close to 13,200 feet, in Colorado weather, with the technology of the 1870s.

Before that, a Methodist preacher named Father John Lewis Dyer was crossing it several times a week in the 1860s, on snowshoes when necessary, to deliver sermons. Whatever else that says about him, it says he was extremely committed to the schedule.

The Highest One You Can Drive A Normal Car Over

For most people the useful question is which high crossing does not require a specialist vehicle, and the answer is Trail Ridge Road at 12,183 feet.

It crosses Rocky Mountain National Park from Estes Park to Grand Lake, it is fully paved, it carries ordinary traffic, and it is the highest continuous paved through road in the United States. It also closes from roughly October to May, because at that elevation the alternative is plowing a road nobody needs in February.

Published elevations for its high point run between 12,183 and 12,201 feet, so the measurement disagreements continue all the way down the list.

And The Highest Paved Pass Proper

If you want a named pass, fully paved, crossing an actual range, the winner is Cottonwood Pass at 12,126 feet, west of Buena Vista. It only qualifies recently.

The road was finally paved along its entire length in 2019, which promoted it above Independence Pass at 12,095 feet, a gap of 31 feet that took decades and a paving contract to settle.

Independence Pass held the title before that and remains the more famous drive, largely because it is narrow enough in places that two vehicles meeting requires negotiation.

Four Answers, One Question

Lay them out together and the ranking depends entirely on what you are prepared to count. The highest paved road of any kind is Mount Blue Sky at around 14,130 feet, which is a dead end. The highest road over an actual pass is Mosquito Pass at 13,185 feet, which needs four-wheel drive. The highest paved through road is Trail Ridge at 12,183 feet. And the highest fully paved named pass is Cottonwood at 12,126 feet.

Every one of those is in Colorado, which is less a coincidence than an inevitability given the state has more terrain above 10,000 feet than anywhere else in the Lower 48.

Why Colorado Wins Everything Here

One cyclist attempting to ride every paved Colorado pass and road above 10,000 feet put the total at 31, which gives a fair sense of the density of the problem.

The state holds 54 peaks above 14,000 feet and a mining history that put roads over passes long before anyone was doing it for the scenery. Mosquito Pass exists because Leadville had silver, not because the view is good, although it is.

Alaska has higher mountains and almost no roads across them. Colorado has slightly lower mountains and a century of people determined to drive over them anyway.

The Honest Answer

The highest mountain pass road in America, if the word pass is doing any work at all, is Mosquito Pass at 13,185 feet, and you will need the right vehicle and a summer month to use it.

If pass is being used loosely to mean high mountain road, it is Mount Blue Sky at roughly 14,130 feet, where the road ends at a parking lot and sends you back the way you came. Both answers are defensible. Only one of them involves getting anywhere.
