Maps of Idaho

Physical Map of Idaho. It shows the physical features of Idaho including its mountain ranges and major rivers.

Idaho is a state located in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, and it covers about 83,642 mi². Montana borders it to the east, Wyoming to the southeast, Oregon to the west, Washington to the northwest, and Nevada and Utah to the south.

The Rocky Mountains run through Idaho's eastern border and include several peaks over 10,000 feet. The Sawtooth Range is one of the most dramatic mountain ranges in Idaho and features jagged peaks that rise from alpine lakes. The Snake River Plain stretches across southern Idaho and includes vast areas of sagebrush steppe. The plain features the “Craters of the Moon National Monument” spans over 750,000 acres in southern Idaho, and is in essence, a sea of young lava flows, complete with scattered islands of cinder cones.

Idaho has over thousands of miles of rivers usable for irrigation, hydropower generation, and recreation. The Salmon River is known as "The River of No Return" because its rapids are challenging to navigate upstream. It flows through central Idaho's Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness Area, which covers over 2.3 million acres.

Idaho also has several large lakes, including Lake Pend Oreille, the largest lake in Idaho by volume. It covers over 148 square miles and reaches depths of up to 1,150 feet. Other notable lakes include Payette Lake and Redfish Lake.

The state's climate varies greatly depending on location due to differences in elevation and proximity to bodies of water. Generally speaking, Idaho has hot summers with average temperatures ranging from the mid-80s to the low 90s Fahrenheit. Winters can be cold, with average temperatures ranging from the high teens to the low 30s Fahrenheit.
