Upstate New York's Best Small Towns for a Weekend Escape
The Hudson Valley runs more than a dozen small towns built for weekends. Woodstock still carries its hippie-and-arts identity along Tinker Street. Rhinebeck holds the Beekman Arms, the oldest continuously operating inn in America since 1766. Tarrytown anchors the eastern Hudson shore with the Gothic Revival Lyndhurst Mansion and Washington Irving's restored Sunnyside. The seven upstate New York towns ahead each carry a distinct weekend identity worth a short drive.
Woodstock

Take a scenic drive through the Catskill Mountains and you'll find Woodstock, the longstanding arts colony that became famous for the 1969 music festival held 60 miles southwest in Bethel. Tinker Street, the main thoroughfare, runs eclectic shops including the Woodstock Emporium and Holiday Haus, plus restaurants like Little Apple Café, Tinker Taco, and the Tinker Street Tavern. The Tinker Street Cinema is a longtime Woodstock landmark.
The Maverick Concert Hall, built in 1916, hosts the longest-running continuous chamber music festival in the United States each summer. The Woodstock Playhouse runs Broadway musicals, plays, and concerts during the season. The actual site of the 1969 Woodstock festival sits in Bethel, about a 90-minute drive southwest, where the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts runs a museum and amphitheater on the original concert pasture. The Hotel Dylan at the base of Overlook Mountain offers themed rooms named for rock musicians associated with the area, plus a heated saltwater pool and fire pits on the lawn.
New Paltz

New Paltz, about 90 minutes north of New York City, is the regional hub for outdoor recreation in the Shawangunk Ridge. The town serves as a base camp for Minnewaska State Park Preserve, where waterfalls, sky lakes, and ridgetop overlooks line miles of carriage roads. Hiking, biking, swimming, and rock climbing all draw weekend crowds. The 22-mile Wallkill Valley Rail Trail runs through the Hudson Valley countryside on a converted railroad bed. The Shawangunk Wine Trail strings together small wineries across the foothills for tasting weekends.
The Mohonk Mountain House, a Victorian-era resort founded in 1869, sits above the glacial Lake Mohonk on about 1,325 acres that adjoin the 8,000-acre Mohonk Preserve and its 85 miles of carriage roads and trails. The all-inclusive resort runs a long calendar of activities, including paddling, winter ice skating, indoor pool swimming, and wellness classes. The New Paltz Regatta and the annual Woodstock Film Festival both bring festival energy to town through the year.
Tarrytown

Tarrytown sits on the eastern bank of the Hudson River with the Tappan Zee just across the water. Lyndhurst Mansion, completed in 1838, is a Gothic Revival country house on 67 acres of grounds designed by Alexander Jackson Davis. Sunnyside, the riverside home of author Washington Irving from 1835 until his death in 1859, is preserved as a museum. Irving wrote "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle" while living in the area, and the Old Dutch Burying Ground next door holds his grave. The Tarrytown Music Hall, built in 1885, is one of the oldest continuously operating theaters in the United States.
Tarrytown's Main Street runs storefronts past the Tarrytown Clock Tower with restaurants like the Bagel Emporium, Rivermarket Bar & Kitchen, and Michelin-rated Mint Premium Foods. The Tarrytown House Estate, a hilltop hotel that began as the 1840 King Mansion, sits within walking distance of Lyndhurst Mansion.
Rhinebeck

Rhinebeck holds the Beekman Arms & Delamater Inn, established at its current crossroads location in 1766 and the oldest continuously operating inn in America. George Washington, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Alexander Hamilton all stayed at the inn. The Antique Market behind the hotel runs more than 30 dealers in a classic two-story barn. Samuel's Sweet Shop on East Market draws regular crowds for handmade chocolates and ice cream.
Bread Alone Bakery and Rhinebeck Bagels handle morning coffee. The Rhinebeck Farmers' Market runs every Sunday from May through December and recently celebrated more than 30 seasons. Ferncliff Forest, a 200-acre preserve north of town, runs 12 miles of trails for walking and mountain biking. A 0.7-mile hike to the forest fire tower delivers Hudson Valley views from the observation deck. The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, a working museum of pre-1940s aircraft, runs weekend air shows in vintage biplanes from June through October.
Hudson

Hudson runs an arts-and-antiques identity along Warren Street, the mile-long main commercial corridor. Olana State Historic Site, the former home and studio of Hudson River School landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church, holds his Persian-style 1872 mansion on 250 acres of landscaped grounds overlooking the Hudson Valley. Church designed the property and gardens himself. Hudson Hall (formerly the Hudson Opera House, built 1855) is the oldest surviving theater in New York State and once hosted Church's gallery shows.
Hudson is a walkable city. Warren and Front Streets cover most of the action. The Carrie Haddad Gallery on Warren Street is one of the longer-running art galleries in the Hudson Valley. Basilica Hudson, a solar-powered former 1880s industrial factory, now runs music festivals, weekly concerts, and art shows. The Maker Hotel downtown offers 11 individually designed rooms plus a lounge, all-day café, and the Maker Fragrance Cocktail Menu pairing house bespoke fragrances with cocktails.
Saugerties

Saugerties sits on the west bank of the Hudson River at the mouth of Esopus Creek. The Saugerties Lighthouse, built in 1869 to replace the original 1835 structure (damaged by ice), operates today as both a living museum and a two-room bed and breakfast accessible by a half-mile gentle hike through a nature preserve. The Falling Waters Preserve, 168 acres of waterfalls, rock ledges, and Hudson River views, covers the outdoor side. Opus 40, a monumental environmental sculpture park created by artist Harvey Fite over 37 years, occupies a former bluestone quarry just outside town.
Partition Street downtown holds boutique shops, art galleries, and local restaurants including Miss Lucy's Kitchen (brunch, lunch, dinner), the Brine Barrel Deli (pickle-focused), and Alleyway Ice Cream (billed as "the world's smallest and hardest to find ice cream shop"). HITS-on-the-Hudson, just outside town, runs top-tier show jumping, dressage, and other equestrian events from May through September.
Cold Spring

Cold Spring sits at the foot of Breakneck Ridge inside Hudson Highlands State Park, which makes it the unofficial trailhead town for one of the most popular hikes in the Hudson Valley. The 3.7-mile Breakneck Ridge loop includes rock-scrambling sections that reward hikers with Hudson Valley views from the ridge. Doug's Pretty Good Pub on Main Street, Riverview, and the Cold Spring Depot (a historic restaurant in the 1890s-era train depot) all handle post-hike meals.
Cold Spring's downtown runs antique-shopping on Main Street with the Cold Spring Antique Center and Once Upon a Time Antiques among the anchors. Poor George holds vintage clothing. Old Souls handles outdoor gear. Split Rock Books runs the independent bookstore side. The Cold Spring Apothecary stocks locally made health and wellness products. The Pig Hill Inn (an 1825 three-story B&B with nine individually decorated rooms) and the Hudson House River Inn (waterfront, steps from the Hudson River) handle downtown lodging.
Why Upstate New York Holds Up For The Weekend
Each of the seven Hudson Valley towns above runs a different version of a weekend visit. Woodstock and Hudson lean into the arts-and-music side. Tarrytown and Rhinebeck preserve early American history along the river. New Paltz anchors the outdoor recreation scene at the foot of the Shawangunks. Saugerties pairs a lighthouse-museum with the Opus 40 sculpture park. Cold Spring is the trailhead town for Breakneck Ridge plus a walkable antique-shopping downtown. Together they make a strong case that the Hudson Valley still rewards the visitors who skip Manhattan and head two hours north.
