This Quiet South Dakota City Is Hiding In Plain Sight

At the northern edge of the Black Hills, Spearfish is a South Dakota gem with roots tracing back to the Gold Rush. What began as a supply center for nearby mining camps grew along Spearfish Creek, whose clear waters shaped both early industry and the landscape that defines the town today. Just 50 miles northwest of Rapid City, Spearfish is framed by limestone cliffs and waterfalls minutes from the downtown hub, providing endless opportunities for outdoor recreation with plenty of historic and cultural attractions to discover along the way.

Spearfish Canyon

Spearfish Canyon, stretching along the 19-mile Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway, is one of the area's top landmarks. The route runs through the Black Hills National Forest, tracing Spearfish Creek as it winds past layered rock formations that rise several hundred feet in places. Waterfalls are among the canyon's many highlights. Spearfish Falls, near Savoy, is reached via a short, maintained trail and stands approximately 47 feet high. Nearby, Roughlock Falls features multiple cascading tiers, boardwalks, viewing platforms, and picnic areas, while Bridal Veil Falls, which drops about 60 feet over a cliff into the creek, is easily viewed from a roadside pullout.

The canyon also has trails ranging from easy walks to more strenuous routes, along with trout fishing right from the creek. Wildlife such as deer, wild turkeys, and numerous bird species are frequently spotted throughout the area, as well. In autumn, the landscape fills with vibrant foliage, while winter brings opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice climbing. Beyond the canyon corridor, more trails await. Crow Peak, just west of Spearfish, challenges hikers with a trail that climbs roughly 1,600 feet in elevation and stretches about 6.4 miles round trip, with an optional extra half-mile spur to Beaver Ridge for good measure. For a shorter and more leisurely outing, drive just over 20 minutes south of Spearfish toward Deadwood to reach the Mount Roosevelt Trail. This easy, less-than-a-mile hike leads to the Mount Roosevelt Friendship Tower, built in honor of Theodore Roosevelt. At the top, a stone observation tower opens to sweeping views of the surrounding Black Hills landscape.

Downtown Spearfish

Downtown Spearfish and the nearby streets are also well worth exploring. A good starting point is at the city’s signature clock tower on Main Street. Sitting just outside the visitor center, the tower is topped with the Termesphere, a hand-painted globe created by artist Dick Termes that features scenes and landmarks from Spearfish. For more nearby experiences, the Matthews Opera House & Arts Center features a year-round schedule of concerts, live theater, and rotating art exhibits. The D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery & Archives, one of the world's oldest operating fish hatcheries, is another notable stop in Spearfish. Inside, interpretive exhibits and preserved hatchery buildings trace the city’s early role in aquaculture and conservation. Outside, open-air ponds are filled with trout visible just beneath the surface, as well as a historic railroad car once used to transport fish.

The Original Spearfish Breakfast House is a local favorite, serving sweet cream pancakes, French toast, and omelets, along with burgers, sandwiches, and salads at lunch.
