9 Most Peaceful Small Towns In California

California's quieter corners offer the kind of escape where the loudest sound might be the waves breaking against a rocky shore or the wind moving through redwoods. Dunsmuir is drenched in natural beauty, with trails leading in all directions to stunning waterfalls, a ski destination, and a state park with granite spires thousands of feet tall. Stretches of pristine sand dunes and seaglass treasures await the explorer in Fort Bragg. Meanwhile, wine country defines the town of Healdsburg. Peace takes different forms in these nine California towns, where the best plan is often no plan at all.

Dunsmuir

Near the foot of the stratovolcano that towers over the southern Cascade Range is Dunsmuir, a town that erupts in exceptional natural beauty. To gain a special perspective on this volcanic mountain, folks can head up to Mt. Shasta Ski Park and ski up to 38 trails across 635 acres that provide up to 2,036 feet in vertical. Then, for another spectacular, soaring landscape, it's worth the drive south to Castle Crags State Park to lay one's eyes on the park's 6,000-foot-tall granite spires and explore some 28 miles of hiking trails near the upper reaches of the Sacramento River. Even at the edge of town, it's an easy walk over to Hedge Creek Falls, a stunning waterfall surrounded by lush forest.

A little way downstream from Hedge Creek Falls, Cave Springs Resort provides a prime location by the river (and near the I-5 freeway), a cool collection of vintage airstreams ideal for a cozy weekend getaway, and an assortment of cabins suitable for those wanting more room to roam.

Fort Bragg

Set on the wild and wonderful Mendocino County coast, Fort Bragg invites visitors to experience a different side of the California coast, one that shines bright with a number of unexpected gems. For one, Glass Beach makes an interesting stop for its abundance of sea glass formed by garbage that was dumped here in the 20th century. A short stroll from Glass Beach leads up to Pudding Creek Beach, a wider sandy beach adorned with a vibrant array of tidepools. And then, for an even wilder day at some wide open space by the Pacific Ocean, folks can head north to Ten Mile Beach to explore one of the region's longest stretches of pristine sand dunes, natural estuaries, and great opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, and birdwatching.

Back near Pudding Creek Beach, The Beachcomber Motel makes a picture-perfect "basecamp" in Fort Bragg with a wonderful assortment of accommodations that may have extra special amenities like fireplaces, in-room hot tubs, and ocean view decks.

Kings Beach

Switching to the serene shores of the north side of Lake Tahoe, Kings Beach presents an oasis of quiet luxury and peaceful vibes high in the Sierra Nevada. Once the snow starts to fall, North Tahoe Regional Park becomes a convenient yet impressive winter wonderland where visitors can go sledding and cross-country skiing. Speaking of skiing, those who crave more of a proper alpine ski (or snowboard) experience can do a day at Northstar California and enjoy the ride on the resort's diverse network of 100 trails spread across 3,170 acres that offer up to 2,280 feet of vertical. And for those wanting a much more simple and peaceful outing by the lake, Kings Beach State Recreation Area tends to stay open year-round and makes an ideal spot to take in the panoramic lake and mountain views spanning well beyond the Nevada state line.

Around 109 miles northwest of Sacramento, Healdsburg showcases the simple yet splendid charm of Sonoma County wine country. At the north end of town, Healdsburg Ridge Open Space Preserve is a 155-acre sanctuary of wetlands and oak woodlands that provides critical habitat for local wildlife like bobcats, mountain lions, deer, rabbits, and over 40 species of birds. Meanwhile, for a fuller taste of local viticulture, Jordan Winery is worth booking an appointment to visit their gorgeous grounds and try their acclaimed French-inspired takes on Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines. Also nearby, folks can book an appointment to tour Stonestreet Mountain Estate and do a tasting of their fine Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and sparkling wines.

For those seeking peace and quiet in an elegantly beautiful Alexander Valley setting, it's hard to beat the Montage Healdsburg luxury resort. Not only is the Montage located within an easy drive of multiple local wineries, but it's also home to the full-service Spa Montage, on-site electric bike rentals, and a deluxe assortment of accommodations built with organic materials (like wood and stone) and equipped with opulent amenities like marble bathrooms, floor-to-ceiling windows, and furnished balconies.

Perched high in the San Bernardino Mountains, and about 100 miles east of Los Angeles, is the sporty mountain town of Big Bear Lake. Starting in winter, SoCal snow lovers can rejoice in the reopening of Snow Summit and Bear Mountain, two local Big Bear Mountain Resort ski areas that offer a nice mix of beginner-friendly and advanced-level ski runs. The ranch offers eight private cabins that all come with complimentary parking, high-speed internet, and in-room coffee and tea, plus some cabins also have their own jetted tubs.

Nestled in a comely corner of the Coachella Valley, Rancho Mirage provides a soothing oasis in the desert. This especially rings true at the nearby Santa Rosa & San Jacinto Mountains National Monument, a 280,071-acre nature preserve that protects a surprising variety of landscapes ranging from open Sonoran Desert wilderness to Cahuilla indigenous cultural sites and the towering peaks of the San Jacinto Mountains. But for anyone wanting a more curated and genteel experience in the desert, they can head over to Sunnylands and tour this magnificent historic estate that U.S. presidents like George H.W. Bush and Barack Obama have used to host official diplomatic functions. And for those who'd rather tee off, the Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa has three nine-hole golf courses that all offer fantastic greens to play.

Sensei Porcupine Creek is just a few blocks away from Rancho Mirage's main business hub (and less than 12 miles from Palm Springs), yet this boutique resort feels like a world unto itself with its 230 acres of land in the Santa Rosa Mountain foothills. Guests wanting to stay active can take advantage of Sensei's world class golf and tennis facilities, while those looking to relax can take their pick of spa treatments and well-appointed spa-style accommodations.
