Originally known as Mauch Chunk, which means “Bear Place” or “Bear Mountain” in the Lenape language, according to the Jim Thorpe Tourism Agency, Jim Thorpe perfectly blends its rich industrial heritage with a distinctive cultural legacy.

The town, founded in the early 1800s by Josiah White, became prominent for Anthracite coal mining and the innovative transportation systems of the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company, including the Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway, also known as the Switchback Gravity Railroad, which was a prototype for early American roller coasters. Even back then, it was a tourist destination, drawing visitors eager to see its mountain scenery and the grand mansions lining what was once known as Millionaire’s Row.

In 1954, the town's name was changed from Mauch Chunk to Jim Thorpe in honor of the Olympian and Native American athlete who was buried there. His legacy lives on as the town celebrates him every year in May during the Jim Thorpe Birthday Celebration. In addition, many people pay their respects at his mausoleum along Route 903.

Beyond its storied past and connection to Jim Thorpe himself, the town offers a refreshing outdoor escape for nature lovers of all kinds.

Whitewater rafting on the Lehigh River is one of Jim Thorpe's top draws. Adventure seekers can take a guided trip from tour operator Whitewater Challengers, which offers popular excursions during scheduled dam releases from the Francis Walter Dam from spring through fall.

The river cuts through the gorge in a rush of rapids, making it an exciting yet accessible ride for beginners and seasoned rafters. The town's whitewater culture is so strong that it hosts the annual Lehigh RiverFest at the Lehigh River Adventure Center. Typically held in August—often during a dam release weekend—the festival features whitewater rafting, live music, and a celebration of the iconic river.

While visitors can experience a scenic train ride on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway year-round, it is especially beautiful during the fall foliage season. During the regular season, the 70-minute ride follows the Lehigh River over bridges, through Glen Onoko Falls, and into Lehigh Gorge State Park. Fall rides are shortened due to high demand and popularity, but still provide spectacular views. While not a traditional outdoor activity, the train offers a relaxing way to take in the area’s breathtaking scenery.

As the seasons change, so does the recreation. In the winter, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing take over, with scenic spots, like the Mauch Chunk watershed, with trails under a blanket of snow.
