This Is The Friendliest Small Town in Utah

Smithfield scored a flawless 100 for friendliness on Nextdoor in 2026. Nextdoor built that number from real neighbor interactions on its app. Neighbors greet newcomers and share a wave along the residential stretch of Main Street. Dog owners meet at Central Park most evenings and trade news while their animals run. Residents fill the calendar with the Christmas Storybook Festival and Trick-or-Treat Street. Neighbors mark America250 with a shared picnic and patriotic music at Mack Park.

Smithfield's Fascinating History

Seth Langton, and Robert and John Thornley, settled in Smithfield in October 1859. Other settlers arrived from Salt Lake and Davis counties the following year. In July 1860, there was an attack at Smithfield by Shoshone Indians, and the settlers decided afterwards to construct their houses in fort lines. They also worked in groups whenever they went outside the limits of these lines. Peace returned, and the first bishop was appointed.

Businesses, including a sawmill, gristmill, and blacksmith shop, emerged, and a day school was established by 1881. The first telegraph line was connected in 1866, and the railroad reached Smithfield in 1873. Today, Smithfield has a permanent population of about 14,000 residents, who take great pride in their hospitable town.

Exploring Downtown Smithfield

Visitors exploring Smithfield today can take a walk down Main Street, where historic buildings remain. The old canning company building dates to Smithfield's industrial era and still has its original water tank. The old public library still operates and is open to visit, along with the nearby Central Park, where residents walk their dogs and take in the surroundings.

At Forrester Acres Field, visitors can join a variety of activities, including the Serendipity Dance, martial arts classes, and group fitness classes. Some of the special events include Trick-Or-Treat Street and the current America250 Smithfield. Events often feature live performances and food trucks. The America250 event will celebrate the Fourth of July as America commemorates its 250th year of independence. Some of the events planned for the celebration include the America250 Walk at Forrester Park and other festivities at Mack Park.

The Wild Outdoors

Smithfield is also the gateway to several outdoor adventures. The Smithfield Campground, five miles away, is a good spot to camp for a couple of nights in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest.

Visitors can also hike to the nearby site of the former Saddleback Mountain Reflectors. The out-and-back trail starts at the top of a dirt road that leads towards Green Canyon. The trail is very steep, so only experienced hikers should attempt it. At the top of Saddleback Mountain once stood the metal reflectors, and the route offers views of Cache Valley and Logan Canyon. The trail is around seven miles from Smithfield in Logan.

Logan Canyon also offers a 3.7-mile hike. The trailhead lies to the left of the road on the way up the canyon after passing the Guinavah-Malibu Campground. This is also a steep hike, but it leads to the Wind Caves, which look out over the canyon. It is also possible to see the Milky Way from here at night.

Community Celebrations

Central Park is open to visitors and their pets for slow walks. The park has open green space, benches, and room for dogs to sniff around. Families are also welcome at the Christmas Storybook Festival at the Smithfield Public Library. Storytellers dress in costume as characters from well-known tales.

The community shows its hospitality throughout the year with events, festivals, and concerts. These include TastingClub events at the library and Teen Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, also at the library. The America250: Picnic and Patriotic Music Celebration will take place in early July 2026 at Mack Park.

Visitors exploring the outdoors and the events of Smithfield will find plenty of places to grab breakfast or dinner, too. El Castillo on Main Street specializes in Salvadoran and Mexican food, including pupusas and tacos. Callaway's Bistro on Main Street serves Italian pasta, steaks, and seafood.

There is more Mexican food to enjoy at La Unica, also on Main Street. Whips Soda serves soft pretzels and a range of sodas. And at the Old Grist Mill, visitors find fresh-baked bread, soups, and cookies.

The perfect friendliness score is more than a number on a website. Residents keep their pioneer history in view, hold Main Street events that anyone can join, and treat newcomers like regulars from the first visit. Between the canyon trails and the year-round calendar at the library and parks, people here have steady reasons to gather. That habit of gathering is what the community means when it calls itself friendly.
