These Michigan Towns Throw Legendary 4th Of July Celebrations

Michigan throws a serious Fourth of July. The towns on this list may not be household names, but their Independence Day celebrations go all out anyway. Beulah runs a quirky parade and a Firecracker 5K before fireworks light up Crystal Lake. Mackinac Island opens with a stone-skipping tournament ahead of a military parade at the fort. Beaver Island answers with its Big Parade and an Island Airways flyover. Grab a sparkler, because these five towns are the place to be for the Fourth in 2026.

Traverse City celebrates America's 250th birthday by leaning on what it does best, the National Cherry Festival. The week runs through early July with live concerts, air shows, parades, and fireworks. The Cherry Royale Parade fills downtown with floats and marching bands, and the Cherry Golf Scramble sends two-person teams out on the 18-hole Spruce Run course. When dusk falls, fireworks light up Grand Traverse Bay, best seen from West End Beach, Open Space Park, or Bryant Park.

Once the festival winds down, the area keeps delivering. Spend lazy hours at Clinch Park Beach, or rent a kayak and get out on the water. The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is built for hiking and scenic drives, and the 1.5-mile Empire Bluffs Trail serves up huge views of the dunes and Lake Michigan. Wine lovers can work their way along the Traverse Wine Coast, where more than 40 wineries sit between the lake and Grand Traverse Bay.

Mackinac Island

On car-free Mackinac Island, the Fourth opens with a tradition set in stone, the Stone Skipping Tournament at Windermere Pointe Beach. Amateurs and pros both take their shot on July 4. Over at Fort Mackinac, curator-led tours run through the summer, and a local historian leads the Built Because of the Revolution program in early July. The fort's Star-Spangled Fourth caps it off with a gun salute, patriotic finery, and a public reading of the Declaration of Independence.

There is more booming nearby, with cannon firing at Fort Michilimackinac and a dual fireworks display lighting both sides of the island. Between events, hop a horse-drawn carriage tour and track down the island's famous fudge shops. For a hit of nostalgia, the Carousel Arcade behind Main Street mixes old and new games around a restored carousel.

Beaver Island

Beaver Island never does the Fourth halfway, and 2026 is no exception. The day kicks off with a boat parade across Paradise Bay, decked-out boats gliding through the harbor before fireworks burst over the water around 10 p.m. Earlier, the Big Parade rolls along the waterfront and the Island Airways flyover sweeps overhead near midday in a missing-man formation. To see the rest of the island, paddle the Beaver Island Water Trail, which loops the whole shoreline and rewards experienced kayakers. Prefer to stay dry? Book a sunset cruise with the Beaver Island Boat Company, or look for bald eagles at the Beaver Island State Wildlife Research Area.

Beulah

Beulah keeps its Fourth of July refreshingly old-school. The parade fills the streets with floats and pumping music, and it returns in 2026 followed by the popular Firecracker 5K. The run starts in town, slips beyond the village limits and through a stretch of forest, and finishes near Crystal Lake. Not up for five kilometers? Grab a bite at the park concession and wait for the fireworks at dusk. The day also brings kids' games and face painting, and afterward you can swim, kayak, or canoe on Crystal Lake or catch Music in the Park, which runs July through August at Beulah Village Park.

Harbor Springs

Harbor Springs packs its calendar for the 250th. July 4 brings Wiener Dog Racing through the streets, plus the Paul Revere 5K and 10-Mile Run and a local art show at Zorn Park. The Fourth of July Parade loops out from City Hall and back, heavy on flags, floats, and singalongs, before the harbor lights up with fireworks at dusk. Come back another season for Night of the Arts, the fall Harvest Festival, or Winterfest, when ice skating, sledding, a Christmas market, and a tree lighting take over town.
