Most of these towns started the same way. Silver and gold pulled prospectors into the high country in the 1870s and 1880s. The ore eventually ran out. What the miners left behind was a grid of Victorian storefronts at 8,000 feet with a mountain at the back door. Telluride and Breckenridge turned that into world-famous ski terrain. Telluride
