11 Best Mountain Towns In America For Retirees

A lot of people assume a mountain town is out of reach by the time they retire. If you know where to look, it doesn't have to be. In Hot Springs, Arkansas, the median house still runs about $238,000, and the downtown bathhouses are a short walk from a hospital. A little more, around $367,000, buys into Hendersonville, North Carolina, with a rail-trail out of downtown and two hospitals in town. And if you are willing to splurge, about $681,000 gets you into Salida, Colorado, higher up and pricier, where the right Medicare plan still makes the town hot-springs pool free. Here are eleven worth a look, and where they part ways.

Hendersonville, North Carolina

Main Street in Hendersonville curves gently through downtown, and its extra-wide sidewalks are lined with flowering planters and sitting areas for anyone who wants to rest a minute. Each May the 20 painted bears of the Bearfootin' Art Walk go up along those sidewalks, and in October they are auctioned off. The Ecusta Trail begins at the Hendersonville Visitor Center on South Main Street, and its first six paved miles out to Horse Shoe opened in summer 2025. The path is 12 to 14 feet wide, room enough for a walker and a cyclist to pass without anyone stepping aside. Trailside Brewing and the Ecusta Market, less than a mile out, are a good turnaround point for a slow morning walk.

On Labor Day weekend, 14 Henderson County growers bring their apples downtown for the North Carolina Apple Festival, in its 80th year in 2026. The typical house sold for about $367,000 between July and September 2026. Weekday classes for older adults meet at Blue Ridge Community College's Flat Rock campus through the Blue Ridge Center for Lifelong Learning, and nobody pays a membership or parking fee. Two hospitals are in town, UNC Health Pardee with 222 licensed beds and AdventHealth Hendersonville with 103. Patton Park's four pickleball courts are right on the Oklawaha Greenway.

Prescott, Arizona

A Prescott week can start on Saturday morning at the Prescott Farmers Market, held May through October on the Yavapai College campus on Sheldon Street. Six-week OLLI at Yavapai College courses for adults 50 and up are held on the same campus five times a year. Wednesday is the day for Watson Lake, because the $5 parking fee is waived that day. The gently graded Peavine National Recreation Trail curves around the south end of the lake about a mile from its trailhead by Watson Woods, on crushed stone and packed dirt, and kayaks and canoes can be rented at the lake for a paddle afterward.

Pickleball is free on the 12 outdoor courts at Pioneer Park. Over the summer of 2026, Prescott's median sale price was $620,000. Golfers have two courses at Antelope Hills, with lunch at the Manzanita Grill between rounds, and both campuses of Dignity Health Yavapai Regional Medical Center, in Prescott and Prescott Valley, are Level IV trauma centers. About 10 inches of snow falls in an average year at 5,319 feet, and the Courthouse Lighting on the plaza is set for December 5, 2026. New Year's Eve ends with a boot drop on Whiskey Row.

Hot Springs, Arkansas

A private whirlpool mineral bath at the Buckstaff Bathhouse on Bathhouse Row is $45, and the $101 traditional package includes a steam cabinet and a 20-minute Swedish massage. Baths there are walk-in only for now, and advance booking is planned for January 2027, when a new operator takes over, with walk-ins still accepted. Down the row at Quapaw Baths and Spa, the public thermal pools are $25 plus tax, though soaking is not recommended for anyone with a heart condition or blood pressure trouble.

The median house in the city went for about $238,000 in the third quarter of 2026. CHI St. Vincent Hot Springs, a 280-bed hospital, has the only Level II trauma center in the southwest part of the state. Out in Hot Springs Village, a gated community of 26,000 acres in the Ouachita Mountains, the typical home value was near $307,000 in August 2026. The Village has nine golf courses with 171 holes among them, and 14 lighted outdoor pickleball courts are at its DeSoto Recreation Area.

Behind the bathhouses is the Grand Promenade, about half a mile of wheelchair-accessible brick with benches and a chess table set along it. Anyone 55 or older pays $12 to ride the elevator up the 216-foot Hot Springs Mountain Tower. Live racing at Oaklawn opens November 27 and continues through May 1, 2027.

Tubbs Hill is 165 acres of natural land at the edge of downtown Coeur d'Alene, and its 2.2-mile perimeter trail begins in McEuen Park on the waterfront. The path is narrow dirt with rocks and roots, and it is best taken in sturdy shoes at an easy pace. Over the three months ending in September 2026, the median sale price in town was about $569,000. For pavement, the North Idaho Centennial Trail has 24 paved miles between Higgens Point and the Washington state line. Kootenai Health, with about 330 beds, is the region's only ACS-verified Level II trauma center. About 28 inches of snow falls in a typical winter. In summer, golfers can play the Coeur d'Alene Resort course, where the 14th green floats on the lake and a boat named Putter ferries players out to it.

Maryville, Tennessee

On Wednesdays between early May and late September, the 11-mile loop road through Cades Cove in Great Smoky Mountains National Park is closed to cars and left to people on bicycles and on foot. The cove, a valley ringed by mountains, lies past Townsend, and a day there costs no more than the park's parking tag, $5 for a day or $40 for a year.

Membership at the Everett Senior Center on Burchfield Street costs $20 a year, or $35 for a couple, and the calendar includes tai chi, bridge, mahjong and dances with a live band. Greenbelt Park downtown is the trailhead for nine miles of paved greenway, and Vienna Coffee House is beside Pistol Creek near the route. The Maryville Farmers Market is open Saturday mornings April through mid-November. Blount Memorial, now part of Prisma Health, has 304 beds. About $400,000 was the median sale price in Maryville for the third quarter of 2026, and there is no state income tax in Tennessee, so pensions and IRA withdrawals go untaxed.

Salida, Colorado

January nights in Salida average about 11 degrees at 7,084 feet, which makes the hot springs pools at the Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center on Rainbow Boulevard a good place for a winter afternoon. With a Medicare plan that includes SilverSneakers or Silver&Fit, membership can be free, and an adult drop-in is $17 for everyone else. The pool is open until 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and closes twice a year for maintenance, and the private soaking pools are for adults only.

Benches are spaced along the Monarch Spur Trail, a gently graded 2.5-mile concrete path west of the Arkansas River downtown, where the FIBArk Whitewater Festival is held each June. October is ArtWalk month in the galleries of the Creative District. The median sale price for the three months ending in September 2026 was about $681,000, and every inpatient room is private at the 25-bed Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.

The Kancamagus Highway, which begins in Conway and covers about 32 miles of White Mountain road, is a popular foliage drive in September and October. Closer in, the Conway Scenic Railroad's Valley Train makes an hour-long, 11-mile round trip out of the North Conway station.

North Conway gets about 80 inches of snow in a typical year, and January lows average near 8 degrees. Weekday lunch at the Gibson Center on Grove Street starts at 11:30, and the center's bus takes residents 60 and older to medical appointments on weekdays, weather permitting. The closest hospital is MaineHealth Memorial, a 25-bed critical access hospital in North Conway. Houses in the town of Conway sold at a median of about $387,000 over the summer of 2026. Since 2025 New Hampshire has had no tax on interest and dividends, and there is no sales tax at the Settlers Green outlets, where shoppers 55 and up get a senior discount on Tuesdays.

New Hampshire residents 65 and older get into the state's day-use parks free, though the parking meters still apply. At Echo Lake State Park that means a one-mile trail around the lake and a swim on a summer afternoon, and a mile-long auto road goes to the top of Cathedral Ledge, so the view is also reachable by car.

Bend, Oregon

The Old Mill Reach of the Deschutes River Trail is a 2.7-mile walk between Farewell Bend Park and McKay Park, mostly paved and nearly level. Three footbridges cross the river along the reach, so the walk can be cut into shorter loops. Beside the trail, the Old Mill District has more than 40 stores and riverside restaurants, and summer concerts are held at the Hayden Homes Amphitheater. Farther downstream, downtown's Drake Park has a railed boardwalk along Mirror Pond.

Bend's median sale price came to about $700,000 for the quarter that ended in September 2026. Oregon's top income tax rate on pensions and IRA withdrawals is 9.9 percent, though shoppers in the state pay no sales tax. Pine Nursery Park has 24 pickleball courts, eight of them always open to the public, and St. Charles Bend has a Level II trauma center. Larkspur Community Center, home of the Bend Senior Center's programs, has a leisure pool with an elevator-style wheelchair lift and classes in warm-water exercise and chair yoga.

Silver City, New Mexico

Over the same quarter, Silver City houses sold for about $269,000 at the median, well under half of the Bend figure. Single New Mexico filers with adjusted gross income under $100,000, and couples under $150,000, owe no state tax on Social Security. Downtown has brick and adobe buildings along Big Ditch Park, and Boston Hill Open Space is a few hundred yards from the middle of town. Scott Park Golf Links has 18 holes on creek bottomland minutes from downtown.

City of Rocks State Park, about 30 miles out, is an International Dark Sky Park with the Gene and Elisabeth Simon Observatory for telescope nights. By day its Hydra Trail is 3.3 miles long with only 164 feet of climbing. Gila Regional Medical Center, a 25-bed critical access hospital, is on 32nd Street, and the Silver City Blues Festival is held each May.

The Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is 44 miles north on NM 15, and Park Service guidance is to allow at least two hours each way on that winding road. The one-mile loop up to the dwellings is steep and rocky, and only water is allowed on the trail.

Hamilton, Montana

More than 230 bird species have been recorded at the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge near Stevensville, where a paved trail is wheelchair accessible. A half-mile spur connects Stevensville to the Bitterroot Trail, which covers 51 mostly paved, fairly flat miles between Missoula and the Angler's Roost just south of Hamilton. The valley's small towns are spaced along the route beside the Bitterroot River.

Lake Como, between Hamilton and Darby, has a $5 day-use fee in summer and a paved first quarter mile on its trail around the lake. A median-priced house in Hamilton cost about $415,000 between July and September 2026. Bitterroot Health Daly Hospital has 25 acute care beds, and its services include oncology and dialysis. Montana residents owe state tax on the same share of Social Security that the IRS counts, with a $5,660 subtraction for filers 65 and older in 2025. On Saturday mornings May through October, Hamilton Farmers Market vendors fill the blocks around Bedford Street.

Minden And Gardnerville, Nevada

On the last full weekend of September, more than 400 vendors set up in Genoa, seven miles north of Minden, for the Genoa Candy Dance. Volunteers make about 4,000 pounds of candy for it, fudge and taffy included, and the first day ends with a ticketed Saturday night dinner and dance. A mile south of Genoa, David Walley's Resort has a large hot spring pool and several smaller hot-tub-style pools kept at different temperatures.

The Fay-Luther Trail System has 11 miles of easy to moderate trail off Foothill Road, and Carson Valley Golf Course is on Riverview Drive in Gardnerville. Reno-Tahoe International Airport is about 45 minutes away. Houses in Gardnerville sold at a median of about $550,000 in the quarter that ended in September 2026, and Nevada has no state income tax. Carson Valley Health's hospital in Gardnerville has a 24-hour emergency room. At the Douglas County Community and Senior Center on Waterloo Lane, weekday lunch is a $3 suggested donation for Nevada residents 60 and older.

What To Weigh Before Choosing

Snowfall in Hot Springs is about an inch in a typical year, though July highs there average above 93 degrees. At 7,084 feet, Salida is the highest of these towns, and the thin air is worth discussing with a doctor before signing a contract. Hendersonville and Maryville had median sale prices of about $400,000 or less, and each town has a hospital with more than 200 beds. Retirees in Nevada and Tennessee pay no state income tax on pensions. Before the house hunt starts, try a week of the senior center calendar. At the Everett Senior Center in Maryville, members pay $20 a year and get lower rates on painting classes and the live-band dances, and the walking club is free.
