From camping in Acadia, a surreal outdoor paradise that offers epic views of the neighboring islands and ocean, to fun-filled events that bring people together, such as the Dawnland Festival of Arts & Ideas, Bar Harbor is as gorgeous as it is friendly. Although Bar Harbour is a bit upscale, the community spirit is admirable. Aside from the annual Dawnland Festival of Arts & Ideas, which draws hundreds of families to the College of Atlantic to experience Wabanaki Culture, there's the Bar Harbor Music Festival, where people come to sway to tunes that inspire the imagination.

If you have read about Southern Hospitality, and now you can't wait to experience it, there's no better place than Beaufort, a neighborly gem just 90 miles from Charleston. Beaufort is known for its mesmerizing nautical charm, as well as a cultural phenomenon known as front-porch sitting. You can't believe it, but on any sunny afternoon, residents often gather on a wraparound porch, enjoying light-hearted banter, drinking sweet tea, or joining together for a block-wide crab boil. Then there's the Annual Beaufort Water Festival, one of the South's most significant outdoor events. It typically takes place at the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, a dreamy outdoor space with soft, soothing views.

And if you believe that good food cannot be enjoyed in solitude, Taste of Beaufort celebrates Low Country cuisine with amazing menu concoctions, music, art, and camaraderie. Additionally, the University of South Carolina Beaufort’s arts venues, including the Center for the Arts, offer a diverse range of cultural experiences to the area, featuring theatre and art.

Provincetown is a fairytale town on Cape Cod, brimming with life and energy. The atmosphere is decidedly warm and friendly, speckled with inviting restaurants featuring side-street patios, galleries showcasing Bohemian artists, and boutiques selling a wide range of knick-knacks. There are many places to have fun, including Long Point Lighthouse Trail, a picturesque stretch that often comes with spotting whales, sharks, and tons of seals, the nearby Race Point Beach, arguably the best beach on the cape and one of the best in New England, and Herring Cove Beach, right outside the town centre.

When it comes to entertaining its residents, few places can match the energy of Provincetown. Nothing demonstrates the inherently welcoming nature of Provincetown more than the annual Carnival Week in August, when the town celebrates the diversity that makes it so unique. It is one of the largest outdoor celebrations in Massachusetts, featuring sunset boat cruises, costume balls, art fairs, and a parade whose scale and magnitude you have probably never experienced before.

Old Saybrook, Connecticut

Old Saybrook, as the name implies, is among the oldest towns on the Eastern board. The air carries echoes of a bygone era, complemented by the Colonial architecture and the old storefronts and properties. Still, the community is friendly and close-knit, and boasts an array of venues and events that bring people together and enhance the neighborly spirit. The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, also known as KATE, features a 285-seat theatre that presents a diverse range of work in genres including music, theatre, opera, dance, comedy, film, and a variety of children’s programming.

The Annual Arts & Crafts Festival is a 60+-year tradition that brings together art enthusiasts, families, and individuals of all ages to admire a diverse range of artistic expressions. There's the annual Summer Concert Series, which takes place at the Old Saybrook Town Green, two public beaches (including Harveys Beach), 36 active civic clubs and organizations, and the well-groomed Fenwick Golf Course.

Forget about the stellar views from Mount Battie. The real gem in Camden is the people; the regular guy you stop and take the time to give you directions, and the stranger you meet at a restaurant who readily gives you an inside scoop on the hidden gems that you should see. The community meets at the Camden Opera House in June to tap their feet to the melodic tunes of Jazz music, while the Camden Public Library hosts a popular "Monday Movies in the Park,” one of the most anticipated summer events.

In the same vein, there's The Harbor Arts & Books Fair, a long-standing community event held in both summer and fall, and the Camden Shakespeare Festival, a nice time to revisit the classics and enjoy extraordinary poetry. There's Megunticook Lake, where you can regularly enjoy an afternoon dip, and Megunticook River Falls, which runs directly into spellbinding Camden Harbor.

The sun is about to set, and in your corner of the world, the spartina grasses in the marshes glimmer like spun gold while silhouettes of shorebirds dance along the horizon. Chincoteague is a tiny island; not more than 4,000 people call it home. The annual Chincoteague Seafood Festival, which brings cheer to the community on the first Saturday in May, has been a fixture on the town's social calendar for more than 50 years. Raw oysters and clams, sweet potato fries, and boardwalk fries are all on the menu.

Pick some homemade waffle cones at the nationally famous Island Creamery before exploring Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, a utopia for birders and wildlife enthusiasts. The Chincoteague Island Pony Swim, popularized by Marguerite Henry's novel Misty of Chincoteague, brings hordes of tourists in late July.

In the Christian tradition, Eden is the ultimate paradise, a peaceful Neverland where love and grace fill the air. Therefore, to name a town “Eden” is to make a fairly bold statement. The creator may not be visiting in the cool of the evening, but on the first Sunday of each month, Edenton’s downtown comes alive with the Sunday Block Party. In this family-friendly community event, adults sip and stroll through the social district between Edenton Bay Trading Company, Governor’s Pub, and Surf, Wind, and Fire’s in-store bar.

The Chowan Arts Council, next to Edenton’s waterfront park, displays a mind-rousing variety of local and regional artwork with monthly rotating exhibits. There’s also the Sounds of Summer Concert Series, which takes place on select summer evenings. When in the area, be sure to snap a photo of the oldest operating Colonial Courthouse in America.

Known as the Ancient City (it was founded in 1565), St. Augustine features centuries-old architecture, iconic cultural sites, and, perhaps best of all, several unspoiled beaches. To know that St. Augustine is friendly, it was recently included on Booking.com’s list of the “10 Most Welcoming Places on Earth for 2025.” The ranking was based on more than 360 million verified customer reviews, so it is not just some anecdotal word on the street. Flagler College, a fine exhibit of Gilded Age architecture, is a beautiful place to explore, as is Jungle Hut Park, a two-acre city beach with direct water access.

The latter is a cool spot to mingle with ruby-throated hummingbirds. Matanzas Inlet, just a heartbeat away, features some of the softest sand you've ever walked on. To intimately explore the area’s natural beauty, several names come to mind, but the 425-acre Washington Oaks Gardens State Park is a must-visit.

Rockland, Maine

Rockland is revolutionary in its unmatched friendliness, as it was when it stood up to the Empire, serving as a hotbed of anti-British privateering during the American Revolution. The Maine Lobster Festival, which began in the 1940s, brings the community together every August in a high-spirited carnival that celebrates the state's most famous and beloved crustacean. Think of five days of fun and feasting that qualify as the ultimate small, seaside community experience.

Rockland is also known for art, music, and a historic, brick-and-stone downtown with a highly coveted designation: a National Main Street Community. There's the Farnsworth Art Museum, perhaps best known for its close partnership with the Wyeth family, and the Center for Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA), Maine's preeminent contemporary arts organization. It is within earshot of the Strand Theatre, a highly regarded community gathering place, as well as numerous restaurants, shops, and hotels.

Touted as the “Seafood Capital of South Carolina”, Murrells Inlet is the ultimate travel destination for food lovers. And if good food is a low-key indicator of friendliness, then this South Carolina jewel deserves its flowers. Keep in mind that you are on the Grand Strand, and eight of the area's best restaurants are centered along the MarshWalk. Think of waterfront dining with warm breezes, live music, and the ocean's greatest treasure, fresh seafood, especially at places like The Claw House.

Steps away from The Claw House is Dead Dog Saloon, which hosts most of MarshWalk’s live music events. Murrells Inlet hosts many recurring events, including Taste of MarshWalk, which features tasty samples from local restaurants, music, and family fun. Meanwhile, Huntington Beach State Park is a well-known outdoor paradise and a soothing place to drift into bliss.

So, regardless of whether a town has a pretty neat collection of Victorian buildings to mesmerize architecture tourists, a vibrant cultural scene that brims with Las Vegas-level entertainment landscape, or spellbinding outdoor beauty with craggy peaks and verdant valleys, it can count for nothing if you feel unwanted. Fortunately, you don't have to travel to the Midwest to experience authentic American warmth and heartiness. Of the many small towns that stud the Atlantic Coast, a good number will instantly feel like home.
