Some of the landmark buildings include the imposing 1901 Brumback Library and the historic Van Wert County Courthouse, which stands alongside a 1903 Civil War cannon and whose clock tower rises above Main Street. The main and surrounding streets were laid out during a growth boom, and their masonry is still largely intact.
Those who want to soak in more of the Americana atmosphere can head to The Stacked Bookstore with its brick facade and red, white, and blue decorations. Touches of Time is filled with antiques and collectibles, while Bob's Bargain Barn offers trinkets and more antique treasures.
People line up in the thousands to experience the beer garden and food truck alley, all part of the annual Peony Festival celebrating the blooming flower. At Hat Creek Arena, bull riding creates a memorable spectacle on Saturday nights from November through April, before visitors head to the B&K Drive In - Root Beer Stand on Main Street for a traditional root beer float and loaded fries.
Nevada, Missouri
Nevada's downtown square is built around the Vernon County Courthouse. It features brick commercial buildings dating to the early 1900s. The town looks distinctly Victorian with its parapets, stone accents, and original storefront framing. The lawn around the courthouse hosts community events, including the Music on the Square concert series, a long-standing Nevada tradition.
Those who want something a little more vintage can head to the Fox Playhouse on South Main Street, which hosts live shows and performances. The Bushwhacker Museum, near downtown and built in 1871, was the local jail for 100 years and now houses artifacts dating to the Civil War.

Mount Airy, North Carolina

There is little to see in the way of urban renewal, with the town opting to leave its Italianate and Greek Revival facades intact.
Along the Michigan Avenue corridor, businesses have defined Marshall for more than a hundred years. Schuler's Restaurant and Pub, for instance, dates to 1909. Today, it still serves Midwest fare in a brick dining room with its original wooden beams.

Brenham, Texas
Brenham sits between Austin and Houston, and boasts one of the most beautiful historic downtown areas in Texas. It features the 1939 Art Deco Washington County Courthouse, surrounded by late 19th-century and early 20th-century red-brick buildings.
These buildings were constructed during the town's cotton and rail boom, and some still feature weathered ghost signs and cast-iron posts.
The Americana atmosphere runs strong at Must Be Heaven, a downtown eatery located inside a historic shop. The eatery prepares and serves diner sandwiches, pies, and hand-dipped Blue Bell Ice Cream every day.
Nearby, The Book Nook sells classics and new releases. And, the Canyon Chick specializes in western and hippie-boho clothing and accessories.
Ellensburg, Washington
A devastating fire in July 1889 destroyed the original frontier settlement of Ellensburg, Washington. The residents banded together to rebuild the entire downtown using fireproof brick and stone.
The result is an architectural district filled with Romanesque Revival arches, intricate brickwork, and turn-of-the-century buildings that date to the railroad and agricultural era of the town and state.
Today, downtown Ellensburg is filled with local shops and outfitters, and is popular with those who prefer walking at their primary mode of transportation. Coffee lovers start with D&M Coffee, where coffee beans are roasted inside a historic building.
From here, people walk to Jerrol's to find books, the Old Mill Country Store for cowboy boots and jeans, and Mountain High Sports for hiking gear. Ellensburg is full of Americana energy, combining cowboy culture with Pacific Northwest scenes.
