The Sierra Nevada is a mountain chain that runs north-south along much of the state of California. The area consists of lush National Forests and scenic vistas, including Sierra National Forest, Yosemite National Forest, and Lake Tahoe. One of the most iconic towns in California’s Sierra Nevada is Tahoe City. The town overlooks the picturesque Lake Tahoe, a popular tourist destination. This gorgeous freshwater lake sits on the border between California and Nevada. It has beautiful scenery and lovely beaches for watersports. It even features an impressive Scandinavian castle visitors can spot from Tahoe City. Tahoe City and Lake Tahoe, more generally, bring numerous outdoor lovers to the area each year.

The town of Murphys sits between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park. Once a gold mining boom town, the area remains lively to this day. Main Street has nearly two dozen wine-tasting rooms where visitors can sit and sip the day away, taking in the local food and drink, as well as the nearby rolling hills.

The towering pine forests and stately sequoia trees of Calaveras Big Trees State Park offer a peaceful escape to enjoy the tranquility of nature. Alternatively, the Mercer Caverns are full of age-old rocks and tunnels, where the depths and pools give an other-worldly feeling. Travelers can escape the hustle and bustle and immerse themselves in a world of stalactites and caves. For the more adventurous explorers, watersports like jet skiing, kayaking, and white water rafting are popular. There are also plenty of skiing, cycling, and even ziplining opportunities too.

Auburn

Auburn is a great option for those looking to explore the foothills of Sierra Nevada. Auburn is a California Gold Rush town that was first established in the 1880s. The whole town is a California Historic landmark. The historic courthouse is a great place to start, then venture on to one of the local museums, such as the Placer County Museum. Auburn sits only 33 miles from Sacramento, making it an easy day trip from the city. Many visitors enjoy exploring the lush wine country in the area. The Placer Wine Trail is an excellent way to taste wines from various vineyards in the area, including some of California's best. The trail runs through Auburn, Granite Bay,  Lincoln, Loomis, Newcastle, and Rocklin and features Auburn wineries such as Mt. Vernon Winery, Bonitata Boutique Wine, Lone Buffalo Vineyards, Viña Castellano Winery, Rappé Family Vineyards, and PaZa Estate Winery.

The Hidden Falls Regional Park is another excellent place to visit. It features gorgeous valley views and impressive scenery. Other outdoor locations include the Auburn State Recreation Area, which has a network of excellent hiking trails leading to the most scenic vistas and viewpoints in Auburn, including the Black Hole of Calcutta Falls.

Angels’ Camp

Any town that is the setting of a fictional story is bound to be full of character and intrigue, and that is undoubtedly true for Angels’ Camp. The town was the setting for a short story written by famed Author Mark Twain, titled The Celebrated Frog of Calaveras. Angels’ Camp has celebrated its connection to this somewhat eccentric story by hosting an annual Mark Twain Wild West Fest, which draws literary enthusiasts from around the globe. The town further highlights its Twain connection in its Mark Twain History Trail, as well as the Mark Twain Exhibit within the more prominent Museum and Carriage House. The museum also holds the most extensive collection of wagons and carriages in the country and a number of exhibits explaining the town’s Gold Rush roots. Another popular draw - especially in the summer - is the New Melones Lake. Laughter fills the air around this bright and beautiful lake as families come together to enjoy summer days under the sun. The Marina features boat rentals for recreation like fishing and exploring. In the evening, the area is transformed into a world of magical wonder as stars paint the sky with constellations. Over 144 campsites at Glory Hole Recreation Area make for the perfect place to enjoy both day and night in Angels’ Camp, making memories with loved ones and soaking up the beautiful surroundings.

Sonora

Another Sierra Nevada town with a Gold Rush past is Sonora. Sometimes called the “Queen of the Southern Mines,” Mexican miners initially founded the area. History buffs can explore the Sonora Fire Museum as well as the Tuolumne County Museum, both of which include a variety of exhibits and artifacts. Sonora is also a great place to explore the lush forests and fields of the region. Winding trails meander their way through woods and alongside creeks and rivers, offering a peaceful escape into nature.  Explore nearby Yosemite National Park or Columbia and Railtown State Historic Parks. Closer to town, Dragoon Gulch Trail is one of the more popular trails.

Lee Vining

Lee Vining is another small town not far from the impressive Yosemite National Park. The park itself brings a lot of tourists and visitors to the area, averaging roughly 3.5 million visits per year. It’s not hard to see why, as the towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls of Yosemite Falls and Bridalveil Falls make for a soothing, tranquil place to explore and soak up the beauty of nature. The Yosemite Valley and surrounding area includes some of the best places to hike, explore, and soak up the atmosphere of Sierra Nevada. Closer to town, Mono Lake’s stunning blue waters shine. Amidst the cool waters are the tufa towers, tall rock formations that jut out of the lake’s surface, creating an other-worldly feel. They are a popular spot for nesting birds and house over 1 million birds each year. The town itself sits at the base of the Sierra Nevada range at Tioga Pass. The pass rises nearly 10,000 feet and is the highest vehicle pass in the state of California. The area is often referred to as Yosemite’s  “Heavenly Gate” as the high elevations, stunning views, and ethereal atmosphere will have visitors feeling as though they are traveling through the clouds. Camping among the stars of fish beside breathtaking views at Ellery, Tioga Lake, or Saddlebag, which each have accessible campgrounds.

June Lake is a painting of pristine lakes, expansive wilderness, and majestic June mountains. The crystalline waters of June Lake give the town its name, and it is this lake that is the most prominent tourist draw to the area. Rocky peaks rise up out of lush green forests that lead almost to the water's edge, where sandy shores slowly fade into the clear blue waters of the lake. In warmer months, visitors can enjoy fishing and boating or relax and soak in the crystalline beauty, enjoying the calm lake and the warm sand. In colder months, the region is a haven for skiers and snowboarders who chase the steep slopes of June Mountain. Throughout it all, the Rush Creek Trail winds its way, leading travelers along pathways with stunning views and breathtaking sites. Spend the day or camp overnight in the Ansel Adams Wilderness, or venture out to Yosemite National Park.

Mammoth Lakes is a stunning display of natural wonder. As the name suggests, it is full of lakes and waterfalls that create a sea of bright blue tranquility. Blue lakes such as Lake Mary or the vibrant Crystal Lake meet lush green forests and impressive mountain ranges for a picture-book-style landscape that is not to be missed. Waterfalls like Rainbow Falls and Twin Falls feed into green meadows like the Agnew Meadows, where wildflowers bloom in the California sun. Three Rivers is a nature lover’s haven. It sits among the foothills of the Sierra Nevada range, along the edge of the San Joaquin Valley.
