Texas gets quiet in the limestone hills and spring-fed creeks of the Texas Hill Country, in the pine country around Bastrop, and out near the Chihuahuan Desert. Fredericksburg carries its German history into its museums and vineyards. Bastrop has a state park still recovering from wildfire. Bandera has cowboy faces carved into trees beside the Medina River. These eight small towns in Texas give travelers plenty to build a 2026 trip around.

Wimberley

Wimberley is built around water. The Blanco River and Cypress Creek run past stands of bald cypress and pecan trees, and Cypress Falls Swimming Hole gives visitors direct access to the creek. Goats sometimes turn up around the property. Old Baldy, also called Prayer Mountain, rises above town and can be reached by a series of uneven stone steps. The summit opens onto a long view across the Wimberley Valley.

Granbury takes its name from Hiram Bronson Granbury, a Waco lawyer who recruited a Confederate infantry company in 1861 and rose to brigadier general. He was killed at the Battle of Franklin in November 1864. The Texas legislature gave his name to the new Hood County seat two years later. Historic Granbury Square now centers the downtown area, with shops arranged around the courthouse. St. Helen's on Granbury Square sells jewelry, candles, and home goods.

Bastrop

Marfa

The old Stardust Motel is gone, but its pale-blue sign still stands beside US 90 on Marfa's western edge. The property opened in 1950 as San Jacinto Courts, later took the Stardust name, and disappeared years before the sign was restored in 2015. Marfa Spirit Co. occupies the 1920s Godbold Feed Mill on West El Paso Street and serves gin, vodka, and sotol cocktails, including drinks made with desert spoon from the Chihuahuan Desert.
