Hop aboard for a spin along the 1884 Georgetown Loop Railroad, one of Colorado’s earliest attractions. This tiny hamlet is some 31 miles east of Banff on the Trans-Canada Highway, within Banff National Park. In addition to cozy lodges and gourmet dining, the eponymous water body is a fairy tale from the moment you turn off the highway until the final glance back at the encircling peaks. Perched on the shores, the glorious Fairmont Chateau inspires a royal stay in a castle, circa 1890. Vail Ski Resort is tucked off to the side on over 5,000 acres of skiing trails and a Swiss-style après-ski scene. Downtown Vail is a whole storybook on its own, worth reading every page through its distinct neighborhoods. In addition to a free shuttle, travelers can hop aboard the Eagle Bahn Gondola for a panoramic ride of snowcapped peaks or the wildflower meadows.
