5 Best Towns Near Mesa For Retirees

For retirees looking to settle near Mesa, Arizona, the East Valley and the mining country east of it have a handful of small towns worth a look. Apache Junction sits 20 minutes from Mesa with a strong 55+ community and Lost Dutchman State Park on its doorstep. Florence and Coolidge move at a quieter pace and come in well below the state median on home prices. Superior and Globe ask for a longer drive but reward it with real mountain scenery and hiking. All five have the basics covered on healthcare and senior amenities, and all five stay under the Arizona median sale price.

Apache Junction sits about 20 minutes east of Mesa and runs on its retirement community. Rock Shadows is one of the better-known 55+ options, a community and RV resort with RV sites and homes for purchase. Amenities include a fitness center, a putting green, and a full calendar of community events that make it easy for new arrivals to connect with neighbors.

Healthcare is close at hand. Banner Goldfield Medical Center is right in Apache Junction and provides 24-hour emergency care, and the larger hospitals in Mesa are a short drive west. For staying active outside, Lost Dutchman State Park sits on the edge of town at the foot of the Superstition Mountains. The Native Plant Trail is a popular, accessible loop that showcases cholla, prickly pear, ocotillo, and other Sonoran Desert species.

For a night out, the Barleen's Arizona Opry (also known as Barleen's Dinner Show) runs old-time rock and roll shows, holiday productions, and country performances. Given how close the town is to Mesa and Phoenix, retirees also benefit from easy access to the metro's amenities. Median home prices in Apache Junction run around $410,000, which is below the Arizona state median.

Florence

Florence is about an hour southeast of Mesa and balances affordability with a quieter pace of life. The Florence Senior Center is a natural first stop for new arrivals, offering practical referrals for legal, medical, and housing help plus benefits counseling and wellness seminars. The calendar also runs cards, bingo, pool games, fitness classes, and regular social events, so connecting with neighbors is not hard.

For a day outdoors, Jason Lopez Memorial Park has walking paths, picnic ramadas, ball fields, volleyball courts, and horseshoe pits. Windmill Winery is the local spot for a glass of Zinfandel or Cabernet with live music and rotating food trucks on site. For a dose of local history, the Pinal County Historical Museum holds photographs dating back more than a century and hosts talks on regional topics like the role of women in Arizona's mining industry.

Banner Florence Medical Center provides local medical services in town, and the regional hospital network extends throughout Pinal County. Median home prices in Florence sit around $340,000, comfortably under the state median.

Coolidge is about 15 minutes northwest of Florence and is the budget pick of the two, with median home prices in the upper $270,000s. Indian Skies is a popular 55+ community here, particularly among RV enthusiasts, with a fitness and billiards room, shuffleboard and pickleball courts, a swimming pool, and a daily and weekly activity schedule published to residents.

The town is also well positioned for outdoor time. Casa Grande Ruins National Monument is right in Coolidge and preserves the Great House and irrigation system built by the Ancestral Sonoran Desert People (Hohokam). Residents who like rockhounding should drop into the Pinal Geology & Mineral Museum in town, which holds a strong collection of stones and gems from across Arizona, a state known for its geology. For hiking, McFarland State Historic Park and the trails around Picacho Peak State Park (south of town) are closer options than anything in metro Phoenix.

Superior

For the budget-minded, Superior is hard to beat, with median home prices in the low $220,000s. It sits about 50 minutes east of Mesa, so the city is still reachable. One trade-off is healthcare: Cobre Valley Superior Clinic handles routine care but closes at 5 p.m., so after-hours emergencies mean a 30-minute drive east to Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center in Globe.

Outdoor destinations are the town's strength. Boyce Thompson Arboretum, just west of Superior, is Arizona's oldest and largest botanical garden and holds a wide collection of desert plants from Arizona, Mexico, Australia, and other arid regions. For a harder workout, the Picketpost Mountain Trail runs about four miles and climbs roughly 2,000 feet to the summit. Serious hikers can also pick up the Legends of Superior Trails, an 11.5-mile system open to hikers, bikers, and horse riders, connecting Queen Creek Canyon in town with the Arizona Trail east of Superior.

Globe is the furthest of the five from Mesa, about an hour and a half out, but the payoff is mountain country. History walkers should head for Old Dominion Historic Mine Park, where the Silver Nugget Trail loops past the remnants of the old mining buildings with educational markers and picnic pavilions along the route.

Round Mountain Park is another local favorite, with the West Trail running around the plateau and leading up to scenic viewpoints over the surrounding ranges. For deeper history, Besh-Ba-Gowah Archaeological Park and Museum sits just south of downtown Globe and preserves the remains of a pueblo village built centuries ago by the Salado culture. The site includes picnic areas and a botanical garden of Southwestern plants alongside the ruins.

For 24-hour emergency healthcare, Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center serves Globe and the surrounding area. Median home prices in Globe are around $220,000, making it one of the most affordable retirement options in the region.

Moving In Near Mesa

Retiring in Arizona does not have to mean choosing between metro amenities and budget. These five towns stay within day-trip range of Mesa while offering lower home prices, strong senior networks, and real outdoor access. Apache Junction and Florence lean toward convenience and organized senior services; Coolidge adds archaeological sites and rockhounding; and Superior and Globe deliver mountain scenery for residents who are happy to drive a little farther. Any one of them makes a reasonable base for a retirement that leans outdoors-first.
