Fredericksburg

This Hill Country favorite combines German heritage with unmistakable Texas hospitality. With over 150 locally owned stores and art galleries, you can spend hours just walking down the main street. Main Street is the place to be in the heart of this small town. It is extremely dog-friendly too! Just make sure that you have good walking shoes on. Walking is the only way to get around quickly, but also the perfect excuse to do some window shopping.

The National Museum of the Pacific War was named the fifth-best history museum in the United States by USA Today in 2020. The museum is dedicated to all those who served in the Pacific War during World War II. There are notable indoor displays and seating for watching short videos. A favorite is towards the end of the museum, where a video screen hides a full-scale small aircraft while a video plays, then lights up the aircraft inside.

It wouldn't be a trip to Fredericksburg without visiting one of the many wineries in the area. There are two ways to enjoy wine country. Either take a tour or just pick your favorite and go. A new favorite is the Rhinory. There you meet Blake, a southern White Rhino who, in the near future, will be part of the breeding program to save these endangered rhinos.

Boerne

Boerne is home to the Hill Country Mile, right in downtown. There is no shortage of nostalgia, with more than 80 shops and different restaurants. The people are welcoming, and you most likely won't get an important conversation done while sitting in a booth. There is always someone you know who needs to catch you up on what is going on in life. The Dienger Trading Co. is a hot spot for breakfast and a warm cup of coffee.

The Cascade Caverns is a tourist hot spot. Easy to see why, with its five major rooms, including the Cathedral Room that gives you an up-close look at natural underground formations. The evening flashlight tours bring a new dimension to the experience of the caves.

Granbury

Granbury's lakeside setting and historic downtown create a welcoming atmosphere that attracts retirees and weekend travelers alike. It is so well-liked that it has been awarded USA Today's Best Historic Small Town in America five times and named the Celebration Capital of Texas in 2023. The Historic Granbury Square has recently been restored to include wider sidewalks, more seating for visitors, and more greenery. A self-guided walking tour is available at the visitor center and takes you through the square.

Take a tour at night with the Ghost and Legends tour. It takes you through the legends about Granbury's past, which includes one about John Wilkes Booth escaping to Granbury. There is also the Doll House Museum with over 6,000 dolls from all over the world. There are celebrity lookalike dolls, and the place itself feels like a giant dollhouse.

The Brazos Drive-in Theatre is the longest-running drive-in in Texas. Tune in your radio to 89.1 FM and recline in your seat for a good time. Movies roll through every weekend and are often double features of two movies in a row.

Wimberley

Burnet is a small town with people who are ready to welcome you in. With five recreational lakes, it is no wonder the area is nicknamed the Highland Lakes region. During the summer months, come to Lake Buchanan, Lake LBJ, Lake Marble Falls, Lake Travis, or Inks Lake for fun in the sun. No matter which lake you end up in, you'll find new people to meet and locals who have been going since they were kids.

Every spring, Burnet shines with an explosion of wildflowers that blanket the landscape. The second weekend in April is when the annual Bluebonnet Festival is held. Locals and more than 40,000 visitors come each year to enjoy the flowers and the festivities, including games, great food, and more.

Presidio

Settled on the Rio Grande and the Rio Conchos, this town has a rich history with a strong Mexican influence. Residents often travel across to Ojinaga for a day trip. If you want authentic Mexican food, you have to come to Presidio. El Buen Gusto is the go-to spot for anyone craving home-cooked Mexican food. The staff is welcoming and knowledgeable, and it is another spot where you won't be able to have a serious conversation without interruptions. People stop to say hello and ask about your day here.

For the speedsters, come to the Presidio International Raceway, where top racers from around the globe compete in drag racing on a quarter-mile track. It is electrifying to be a spectator, let alone to compete with the best of the best.

Located just 42 miles northwest of Fredericksburg is the only place in Texas where you can find blue topaz. It is also home to the author of the classic Old Yeller. Mason feels like stepping into an old western movie, with the classic false-front rooflines of the town square. Mason Town Square is full of bright colors with the courthouse sitting right in the middle of everything. The Mason Courthouse did burn down in 2021 but has since been restored to its original glory. Inside the square, you will find food, drinks, and small boutique shops. While you are there, take some time to eat at the Willow Creek Cafe. This diner is full of welcoming people and big portions of home-cooked meals.

The weekends are the time for gathering at the historic Odeon Theatre. The one-screen theatre is open every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, where you can catch live music, a modern movie, or even a classic film. Movies rotate weekly, and the fully renovated space features a concession stand to round out your evening.

On Thursday through Sunday evenings during the summer bat season, visitors to the Eckert James River Bat Cave can watch 4 to 6 million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge to hunt. This bat cave is a nursery and is owned by the Nature Conservancy.
