Ranked The Best College Library in the Country by College Rank (as of September 2025), the University of Michigan's Legal Research Library resembles scenery straight out of a Hogwarts movie. Originally constructed in 1931, this fascinating structure has a cathedral-like main study room that accommodates up to 500 readers. See the expansive stained glass windows, gorgeous Gothic tracery, and oak-panelled walls that closely resemble this room to the King's College Chapel in Cambridge, England. The William W. Cook Legal Research Library is one of four buildings encompassing the Law Quadrangle.

If grand and gorgeous sounds like your cup of tea, grab your camera and head to the Detroit Public Library. This is undoubtedly one of the most iconic libraries in the state of Michigan. While construction for the Main Library on Woodward Avenue began in 1912, the process underwent several delays due to World War I. Built with Vermont marble and Serpentine Italian marble, this extraordinary early Italian Renaissance-style landmark opened in March 1921. To make space for the expanding book collection, two additional wings were constructed in 1963, doubling the library's size. Today, you can explore the impressive collection of 2.5 million items, including books, vinyl books, sheet music, DVDs, video games, graphic novels, and cookbooks, with something for the whole family to enjoy in stock.

Once you have explored the grounds, walk on over to the Detroit Historical Museum. Dive deeper into Detroit's past through the incredible exhibits, impressive displays, and family-friendly activities you will not find anywhere else. From a fur trading post dating back to the 1700s, to indoor 19th and early 20th-century cobblestone streets, and America's Motor City exhibition, this is a place well worth the trip. From there, sit back and relax with a unique contemporary and classic world cinema experience in the Detroit Film Theatre. Since 1974, this vintage theatre has been offering an intriguing collection of international cinema.

Southfield Public Library — Southfield

The Southfield Public Library may have a much more modern structure, but it is certainly one of the most iconic libraries in Michigan. Admire the stunning three-story glass tower of this 120,000-square-foot building, designed with sustainability and advanced technology, before you step inside. From movies to music, magazines, audiobooks, print items, and books in various languages, there are endless ways for everyone to learn. In the Children’s Department lies a charming storybook castle covered by a giant reading book that the kids will love. There is also a giant book throne and dragon hideaway to make the experience even more magical. Even if you don't have kids, whether you are looking for a whimsical escape, want to capture some cute Instagram photos, or love fairy tales, this is a wonderful place to discover.

Nearby, practice your aim in a gorgeous setting at the Evergreen Hills Golf Course. This nine-hole, par 34, 2,954-yard course features beautifully landscaped greens, renowned for their quality condition as a public course. The Southfield City Centre Trail also features a unique art installation that can not be found anywhere else. Pack your camera and head to Red Pole Park, a distinctive walking path bordered by 65 bright red poles stretching 35 feet high, some of which shine with twinkling blue lights at night.

Immerse yourself in a world of blue as you set foot onto Mackinac Island, home to one of the most iconic libraries in Michigan. Between a remarkable main reading room, a fascinating specialized rare books room, and a picturesque porch for outdoor reading in the spring and summer, this site is well worth the trip. Spend some time in the Rosa Webb Room, dedicated to Library Founder and Organizer-President of the Mackinac Island Community Association, Rosa. Serving the state government and citizens since 1828, the Library of Michigan is a historical landmark with a significant early role in Lansing.
