But like so many countries, in the United States, many barriers can exist to hamper one's ability to study at a more advanced level. Nonetheless, America is largely a highly educated nation, and graduates from across the country have long pursued the dream of becoming the leaders of tomorrow. This article looks at 2024's top five most educated cities in the United States, according to a report by WalletHub that ranked America's 150 largest metropolitan statistical areas on 11 key metrics across two categories: educational attainment, and quality of education and attainment gaps.

1. Ann Arbor, Michigan

Home to the University of Michigan (established in 1817), Ann Arbor's local economy is dominated by its ties to the school, which enrolls more than 50,000 students and stands as the area's largest employer, with roughly 30,000 workers. Ann Arbor topped WalletHub's 2024 ranking with an overall score of 93.7 out of 100. It has the country's highest share of adults 25 and older holding at least a bachelor's degree, at more than 57%, while about 30% hold an advanced degree. Both rates are among the highest in the nation.

2. San Jose Metropolitan Area, California

Taking in the cities of Sunnyvale and Santa Clara, the San Jose metropolitan area ranks as America's second most educated, with an overall score of 82.1 out of 100. It also placed first in the country for the quality of its universities. More than half of its adults 25 and older hold at least a bachelor's degree. Home to San Jose State University and Santa Clara University, the metro sits at the heart of Silicon Valley, and as the headquarters of companies including eBay, PayPal, and Zoom, its educated workforce anchors a major center of high-tech innovation.

3. Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area

The Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, which extends into Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia and includes Arlington and Alexandria, is the nation's third most educated hub, with an overall score of 81.9 out of 100. Around 53% of its adults 25 and older hold at least a bachelor's degree and about 26% hold an advanced degree. The regional economy is heavily shaped by the federal government, and many graduates and students here have direct ties to a government agency. Home to schools including Georgetown University, George Washington University, and George Mason University, the capital region is one of the most credentialed labor markets in the country.

4. Durham-Chapel Hill, North Carolina

As a pivotal part of the Research Triangle and anchored by Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Durham-Chapel Hill is a cornerstone of academic life. These universities boost the regional economy by drawing students and faculty from across the globe. According to WalletHub's analysis, Durham-Chapel Hill ranks as the fourth most educated metro area in the country, with a score of 81.32. About 50% of adults 25 and older hold at least a bachelor's degree, and the area ties for the highest share of residents with a graduate or professional degree in the nation, at roughly 26%, well above the national average.

5. Madison, Wisconsin

Madison is the capital city of Wisconsin and rounds out the top five with an overall score of 81.0 out of 100. Roughly half of its adults 25 and older hold at least a bachelor's degree, and the metro ranks 11th in the nation for university quality, with only about a 2% gap between the share of women and men who hold a degree. Home to the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1848) and Madison Area Technical College, this "City of Four Lakes" is one of Wisconsin's fastest-growing cities, with an expanding tech sector and healthcare industry. The University of Wisconsin-Madison is among the city's largest employers.
