This Quiet North Carolina Town Is An Underrated Gem For 2026

North Carolina is one of the most beautiful states in the country. Bordered on its east coast by the Atlantic Ocean, it features long stretches of beautiful beaches, while inland, rivers crisscross the countryside. Given its position along the water and the numerous waterways that pass through the state, towns and cities in North Carolina have emerged that celebrate their connection to the water. One of these is the city of Washington. Given its small population of less than 10,000 people, it is not one of the cities that most quickly come to mind in the state. However, this underrated gem is one of the most lovely places to visit. Its location on the Pamlico River has given rise to parks, museums, and dining destinations that capitalize on the city's unique position.

Given Washington's location along the Pamlico River, there are numerous places along the water for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy. Nearby Goose Creek State Park is situated just downriver and features a swim beach where visitors can take a dip. Anglers can cast a line out on the water, and there are points to launch from by paddleboat. Those hoping for their daily catch can look forward to finding bluegill, yellow perch, and largemouth bass.

Those heading onto the water by boat can visit Dina's Landing on the west side of Goose Creek, close to the river. Those hiking in the area have numerous places to explore. Blackbeard's Old Stomping Grounds marks the area where Edward Teach, also known as the pirate Blackbeard, frequented the coastline. These stomping grounds are just one quirky spot visitors can see before heading out on one of the park's many trails. Goose Creek Trail is the park's longest and one of the most lovely trails, with its end depositing hikers onto a sandy beach not far from Goose Creek.

Another feature of being alongside the Pamlico River is the ability to stay in town and enjoy local amenities while still taking in the sights of the water. The Washington Waterfront Docks offer dock rentals for boat owners, but this area is fun for all residents and visitors. Stretching out from the docks is a brick promenade that runs not far from nearby popular shopping and dining destinations. Families can enjoy the picnic tables along the promenade while children hit the playground, or listen to live music during one of the summer music festivals hosted at adjacent Festival Park.

As mentioned, those coming off the promenade and onto Main Street have no shortage of places to shop. The nearby Nauti Life specializes in gifts and apparel that boast a nautical flair. Visitors will find clothes for men and women, jewelry and other accessories, collections of wine glasses, and even soaps and buoy chimes. Not far away, hungry visitors will want to visit the Bank Bistro and Bar for popular dishes like Ahi tuna, crab cakes, or classic prime rib.

While you are along the waterfront, you should visit the River Walk Gallery. The gallery is a cooperative that focuses on featuring the works of local artists, who also serve as the gallery's staff. Visitors will find paintings and pottery on display. The unique aspect of this destination, however, is that it hosts classes and workshops. Members of the cooperative instruct students on how to paint a variety of pieces, including animal close-ups, still-life portraits, and landscapes and scenery.
