This Quiet Arkansas Town Is An Underrated Gem For 2026

Mountain View is tucked into the Ozark Mountains and bills itself as the Folk Music Capital of the World. The town backs that title up at Ozark Folk Center State Park which hosts a bluegrass festival twice a year and on Courthouse Square where the Arkansas Folk Festival draws tens of thousands of people each spring. Beyond the music there is Blanchard Springs Caverns and Sylamore Creek for the outdoor side. Mellon's Country Store and the Stone Drive-In are still going on the nostalgia side. The town also sits between Heber Springs and Batesville which makes it a workable base for the surrounding region. In Arkansas in 2026 it stands out as one of the quieter places where culture and the outdoors overlap without trying.

What To Do

With Mountain View near the Ozark-St. Francis National Forest, the town provides access to some of the region's most popular natural areas. One of the most notable is Blanchard Springs Caverns, where guided tours take you deep into vast chambers filled with limestone formations, active streams, and the Cathedral Room, a striking natural space. Above ground just north of town, Sylamore Creek winds through dense forest and becomes a popular warm-weather escape. In the summer, it's a place to swim, float, or fish along shallow stretches, with rocky banks and shaded pull-offs.

Farther along the same creek system is Gunner Pool Recreation Area, a more secluded spot with swimming holes and a forested campground. It feels more primitive than other access points, with cold water and simple facilities that attract campers and day users looking for a less developed setting. Back in town, Mellon's Country Store offers old-fashioned candy, sodas, souvenirs, and locally made items, adding to the town's nostalgic feel, and for an evening out, the Stone Drive-In Theatre offers a classic moviegoing experience and is one of the few remaining drive-ins in Arkansas.

Where To Dine

When it comes to dining, JoJo's Catfish Wharf along the White River stands out. Catfish is obviously the signature dish, served in a classic Southern style at both lunch and dinner, with plates that include fries or a baked potato, hushpuppies, pinto beans, green tomato relish, and housemade tartar sauce. The menu extends beyond catfish, however, with shrimp, steaks, chicken entrées, burgers, and sandwiches, all in a relaxed dining room overlooking the river. Nearby, Anglers Restaurant inside Anglers White River Resort offers another seafood-focused option, with catfish served alongside familiar Southern sides.

Just steps from the Stone County Courthouse Square, PJ's Rainbow Café is a longtime local diner known for breakfast staples like biscuits and gravy, pancakes, French toast, waffles, and made-to-order omelets. Lunch features classic comfort food, from burgers and hot sandwiches to plates like chicken-fried steak, chopped sirloin, and liver and onions. Homemade pie rounds out the menu and the experience, so be sure to save room.

Just under an hour away, Batesville sits along the White River and is one of the older established towns in Arkansas. Its downtown includes several buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, along with preserved historic homes nearby. The Garrott House, a Georgian-style home from the city's early years, remains one of its most recognizable landmarks. In winter, the White River Wonderland celebration at Riverside Park brings the area to life with a large light display, carriage rides, ice skating, train rides, a Ferris wheel, and other seasonal attractions along the river.

Sandy Beach is a popular spot on the lake, while the Greers Ferry Dam overlook provides wide views of the water and surrounding hills. Outdoor trails include the Buckeye Trail, a short paved, barrier-free route with maps available at the William Carl Garner Visitor Center, and the Sulphur Creek Trail, which offers longer routes for birdwatching and wildlife viewing. Nearby highlights include Sugarloaf Mountain and Bridal Veil Falls.
