Healdsburg boasts a rich past dating back thousands of years when Western Wappo and Southern Pomo-speaking people lived there. Known for its bountiful greenery along the Russian River, the land was claimed by Captain Henry Fitch in 1841 as part of his Rancho Sotoyome land grant. In the following years, people from all over came into the town, especially during the Gold Rush of 1849. In 1854, a gold seeker named Harmon Heald built a general store and post office in the town. Subsequently, in 1857, he hired a surveyor to lay out a central plaza and purchased part of the rancho, officially founding the town of Heald’s “Burg.”

Commerce began to thrive in the region, and farming became a mainstay from the 1890s to the 1940s. In fact, the seasoning of lemon pepper was a major development in Healdsburg in 1967, and since then, the town has maintained its image as a thriving yet friendly hub in Sonoma County.
