The 6 Best Coastal Towns to Retire In Florida

For generations, Florida has been where Americans go to retire, and rightfully so. Along its coast, a home near the water can still cost less than the state’s typical house. In Port Richey, the median sits around $226,000, and in Englewood, the priciest of the bunch, it runs near $350,000. Both come in under the statewide median for a Florida home, which for a retiree is the difference between watching the budget and living on the water. Mornings here run slow and warm, with the coast usually minutes from the front door. In the six towns ahead, that kind of address comes with a price that leaves room to enjoy it.

Englewood

At the southern end of Manasota Key, Stump Pass Beach State Park has a mile of shoreline where shells and shark teeth wash ashore. Winter brings ranger-led nature hikes, while kayakers can paddle around the islands east of the park. Lemon Bay separates the key from Englewood's mainland, giving the area both Gulf beaches and protected-water outings.

Englewood's August 2026 median home sale price was $350,000, about $34,600 below Florida's. On the mainland, Dearborn Street has Lemon Bay Playhouse, which stages comedies and dramas. Dearborn Coffeehouse and Bakery serves breakfast sandwiches and pastries near the downtown shops. The seasonal Thursday farmers market adds a regular stop for fresh produce. HCA Florida Englewood Hospital is on Medical Boulevard, so hospital care does not require a trip to Sarasota.

Sebastian

Sebastian's twin piers at Riverview Park extend into the Indian River Lagoon, with room to fish or watch the sunrise. Oak shade covers parts of the park, and its waterfront walkway gives residents a place to stretch a short outing into a longer stroll. The Sebastian Clam Bake and concerts at the bandstand bring people back for different reasons throughout the year.

Along the riverfront, Capt. Hiram's has waterfront dining and live music, with boat rentals available for exploring the lagoon. You can make boating a regular part of retirement without keeping a boat in the driveway. The Atlantic lies beyond the barrier island, so an ocean beach day involves leaving the mainland; the lagoon is the water you see on an everyday walk in town.

At $343,000, Sebastian's August median sale price was $41,600 below the state figure. Orlando Health Sebastian River Hospital, on U.S. Highway 1, provides a local emergency room open around the clock.

Crystal River

Winter brings manatees into the warmer springs around Crystal River, and residents can watch them at Three Sisters Springs without entering the water. Its boardwalk has viewing platforms overlooking the springs, with nature trails nearby. Land access and swimming are separate outings: visitors cannot enter the springs from the boardwalk property. The city offers a shuttle, and parking at the refuge is limited to designated accessible spaces.

Crystal River's August median home sale price was $280,833, roughly $103,800 below Florida's. Kings Bay and the river leading to the Gulf define much of the outdoor life, while North Citrus Avenue has the Shoppes of Heritage Village. Tea House 650 serves breakfast and lunch there, making it an easy stop after browsing. For an outing with more history, Crystal River Archaeological State Park preserves a Native American ceremonial site used for 1,600 years. Paved paths pass the mounds, and the museum explains the coastal community that once gathered here. Fort Island Gulf Beach, west of town, provides a separate destination for a sandy beach afternoon.

Edgewater

Menard-May Park gives Edgewater residents a launch point into a network of mangrove islands in the Indian River Lagoon. The city's mapped paddling routes start at its small beach, where parking and restrooms make repeat outings easier. Herons and pelicans frequent the islands; dolphins and manatees may appear in the water. Routes cross channels used by motorboats, so paddlers need to watch boat traffic. Closed-toed water shoes are useful around the oyster beds.

Edgewater's August median home sale price was $309,333, about $75,300 below the statewide median. The Riverwalk provides a land-based option for walking or cycling along the waterfront corridor. Menard-May Park is also within walking distance of restaurants and the post office, allowing an outing on the water to end with lunch nearby. Atlantic beach trips run through neighboring New Smyrna Beach and onto the barrier island. Hospital care is available on that neighboring city's mainland at AdventHealth New Smyrna Beach on Palmetto Street.

Port Richey

Lunch in Port Richey can come with a place to tie up your boat. Catches Waterfront Grille on Bayview Street welcomes arrivals by water, and nearby Nick's Park has the city's boat ramp and a fishing dock. Trailer parking is limited there, a useful consideration for anyone planning to spend retirement mornings on the river. Waterfront Park offers another launch for kayaks, plus a walking trail for days spent ashore.

The August median home sale price was $226,483, approximately $158,100 below Florida's. This stretch of Gulf coast is particularly suited to exploring marshes and tidal waterways. At nearby Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park, paddlers can follow creeks through mangroves, with kayak and canoe rentals available. The main entrance off U.S. 19 also serves hiking trails and boardwalks. Residents who prefer a shorter waterfront stop can take a picnic to Oelsner Park on Miller Bayou, where gazebos provide seating beside the water.

Titusville

Space View Park sits less than 15 miles across the water from Kennedy Space Center's launch pads. The park stays open for launches scheduled after normal hours, giving Titusville residents an unusual reason to head downtown at night. Between launches, the pier and spaceflight monuments make the Indian River waterfront worth a walk. Nearby, the American Space Museum explores the area's space history, and Titusville Playhouse supplies live theater.

Titusville's August median home sale price was $285,167, about $99,400 below the state figure. Parrish Medical Center is on North Washington Avenue, keeping hospital services in town.

Across the lagoon, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge offers wildlife watching, while Playalinda Beach has an undeveloped Atlantic shoreline within Canaveral National Seashore. NASA operations can close beach access, so checking before driving over matters.

In Florida's coastal towns, the distance between a house and a public waterfront matters as much as the view through its windows. An Englewood address near Dearborn Street puts theater and coffee stops close by, while a Sebastian home near Riverview Park makes lagoon walks easier to fit into the day. Before buying, drive the route to the beach and check the walk to your nearest park. Get property-specific insurance quotes, too, since most homeowners policies exclude flood damage. The town's median sale price is a starting point for the housing budget. A home within reach of a public pier can provide regular time beside the water without requiring private waterfront ownership.
