Everything is centered around the annual Madison’s Magical Christmas, which takes place in December and is the unofficial kickoff to the holiday season. The day begins in the morning with Santa at the Madison City Armory and is an opportunity for kids to get their pictures taken with Jolly Old Saint Nick as well as win some special prizes. Later in the day, the annual KJAM Parade of Lights where local community organizations and businesses ride their floats down Egan Avenue for all to see.

Community institutions participate with one-off events like special matinee showings of Elf and the Grinch at Dakota Cinema, free swimming at the Madison Community Center, and a Christmas Cookie Carryout courtesy of Friends of the Madison Public Library. Local businesses also get in on the yuletide fun with the face painting, scavenger hunts, milk and cookies, and a Build your Own Popcorn Ball event at Gaylen’s Gourmet Popcorn.

Vermillion

Vermillion’s downtown becomes a lively holiday destination each December, drawing families, University of South Dakota visitors, and travelers from towns throughout the Missouri River valley. The city’s Standstill Parade of Lights winds along Main Street and features eye-catching floats, live performances, hot chocolate, and an appearance by Santa Claus to light the Vermillion Christmas tree. The spectacle puts a unique twist on the standard parade by requiring the floats to stand still and onlookers to walk along the route to see all holiday cheer.

After the parade, Santa rides a firetruck directly to the Vermillion Public Library for their Holiday Open House. Attendees will be able to listen to the Children’s Choir, holiday crafts, and more. The National Music Museum is a fixture of Vermillion and hosts holiday programming and concerts to help celebrate the season. One such event is A Victorian Christmas with Curtis & Loretta, an old-fashioned holiday concert that features classic holiday songs performed on a variety of traditional instruments like the folk harp and mandolin.

Yankton
