Massachusetts settlers acquired the land of present-day Norwalk in two different agreements in 1640 and 1641. The first landowners came from Hartford in 1649, and the town was founded in 1651. This early settlement reared cows and produced flax and hemp. The town was nearly devastated during the Revolutionary War by British soldiers led by General Tryon. By 1880, oyster farming had dominated the local economy, and Norwalk had the world's biggest fleet of steam-powered oyster boats. The settlement was reincorporated as a city in 1893 and united into the metropolis we know today in 1913.
