The suburban community was once inhabited by Winnebago Indians, who were relocated to Maple Grove from Wisconsin by the federal government. In 1851, Louis Gervais and Pierre Bottineau arrived and staked their claims. Before 1855, W. E. Evans, Harvey Abel, Patrick Defer, and O. R. Champlin all made Maple Grove their home. They were not subject to eviction by land speculators and were allowed to purchase their claims at fair market value. A church, a town hall, and numerous dwellings were part of the city's expansion in 1855. Large stands of maple trees were common in the city, making it a key source of maple syrup. Maple Grove has remained a thriving neighborhood in the Twin Cities metro area.
