Spearfish is a peaceful, family-friendly town loved for its safe, walkable neighborhoods and welcoming, dog-friendly community. Part of its neighbourly character certainly stems from its status as the home base of the 143-year-old Black Hills State University, which draws a young, open-minded, and adventurous crowd ready to mingle and explore life. The Matthews Opera House, built in 1906, is the centerpiece of the arts in Spearfish, operating both an Art Gallery for visual arts and a live theater offering performances and concerts throughout the year.

Hot Springs is one of the quieter communities in the southern Black Hills. It lies in a red-rock canyon along the Fall River and is surrounded by forests, grasslands, and national parks, an environment that naturally creates a calm, mellow atmosphere. The town is known for several sandstone buildings, some of them designed by renowned Omaha architect Thomas Rogers Kimball. The Angostura Reservoir, a 4,407-acre lake that offers epic fishing and camping opportunities, is just 10 miles southeast of the city.

Hot Springs has a strong veteran-oriented identity, mainly because of the Black Hills VA Health Care System - Hot Springs Campus, a large facility originally built in 1907 as the Battle Mountain Sanitarium to treat veterans with respiratory illnesses. There's also the iconic Hot Springs Theatre, where you can invite a friend for a show. The Fall River Hot Air Balloon Festival is an enjoyable August event featuring a vendor's market, live music, magic shows, balloon animals, and face painters.
