6 Wallet-Friendly Small Towns To Retire In Sweden

Sweden has plenty to offer retirees who enjoy small communities and easy access to the outdoors. While its cities are expensive, housing can be far less expensive in some rural parts of the country. For this list, affordability is measured using 2025 data from Statistics Sweden, or SCB, for the average purchase price of permanent small houses at the municipality level. The national average was SEK 3.913 million, while the six municipalities represented here averaged between SEK 449,000 and SEK 708,000. With a mix of senior-friendly services and amenities, these are six wallet-friendly small towns to consider for retirement in Sweden.

Åsele stands out for low housing prices and access to northern Sweden's forests. In 2025, the average purchase price for a permanent small house across Åsele Municipality was SEK 502,000, far below the national average. In town, Åsele Hembygdsområde presents local history through 17 buildings and dozens of exhibitions. The annual Åsele Market has roots dating to the 1600s and remains one of the community's best-known events. About 3.5 kilometres from central Åsele, Åslia offers downhill and cross-country skiing during winter. Its trails can also be used for walking during snow-free months.

Dorotea had the lowest average small-house purchase price among Swedish municipalities in SCB's 2025 data, at SEK 449,000. The town also provides several cultural and outdoor attractions close to its centre. The five-kilometre Kullerbacksrundan walking route passes through forest and reaches the Kullerbacken Heritage Area, where historic buildings preserve parts of the area's past. Dorotea is also home to a caravan museum connected with Polarvagnen, a caravan manufacturer associated with the town since the 1960s. At Dorotea Church, visitors can see sculptures by Carl Milles in a building designed by his brother Evert Milles.

Malå

Malå combines low property prices with recreation close to town. The average purchase price for a permanent small house in Malå Municipality was SEK 634,000 in 2025. Tjamstanbackarna is located in Malå itself and offers downhill skiing during the winter season, with cross-country trails nearby as well. For local history, Malå Heritage Centre occupies 13 buildings near the foot of Tjamstanberget. Its displays cover the area's past, while a summer cafe operates when the site is open. Restaurang Laven at Hotell Tjamstan provides seasonal lunch and dinner service. Beyond the centre, the wider Malå area has extensive forests and waterways for walking or fishing.

Kramfors

Kramfors offers inexpensive housing within reach of the dramatic High Coast. In 2025, Kramfors Municipality recorded an average purchase price for permanent small houses of SEK 652,000. The wider municipality includes part of the High Coast, where hiking routes pass forests and rocky coastal terrain. Near Docksta, Skuleberget reaches 295 metres above sea level and has several routes leading toward the summit. A cableway also operates during the summer season. Farther south, the High Coast Bridge crosses the Ångermanälven between Kramfors and Härnösand municipalities. Its pylons rise about 180 metres above the water.

Strömsund

Strömsund is another northern town where house prices remain well below Sweden's national average. Strömsund Municipality had an average permanent small-house purchase price of SEK 642,000 in 2025. Close to the centre, Landön provides an easy-to-reach recreation area with walking paths and places to sit beside Vattudalen. The paths are designed to be relatively easy to use, including for older visitors. Nearby, Strömsunds Hembygdsgård is an open-air museum with around 30 buildings containing exhibitions on local history. The surrounding municipality also provides opportunities for cross-country skiing during winter.

Hammarstrand is the main town in Ragunda Municipality, where the average purchase price for a permanent small house was SEK 708,000 in 2025. One of the area's most unusual attractions is Döda Fallet, or the Dead Falls. The former waterfall was left dry in 1796 after a failed timber-floating canal project caused Ragundasjön to drain and the Indalsälven River to change course. In Hammarstrand itself, Kullstabacken provides downhill and cross-country skiing. The nearby Kullstabergsleden hiking route climbs above town and passes Hammarstrand's oversized hillside sign, whose letters stand eight metres high.

Åsele and Dorotea have especially low house prices, while Malå and Strömsund add convenient winter recreation. Kramfors provides access to the High Coast, while Hammarstrand combines low municipal housing costs with distinctive attractions in the Ragunda Valley. SCB's 2025 figures give all six a clear affordability basis when home purchase prices are the measure. Buyers should still compare individual property conditions and ongoing housing expenses before making a decision. International retirees should also check Sweden's residency requirements for their citizenship and financial circumstances before planning a permanent move.
